Brujerias Latin Mcguffa's D
$13.59 Not all mellow, Houston Person's tribute to the softer side of jazz has its moments based on the laid-back timbre of his soul rather than a program consisting of only ballads. The tenor sax he wields certainly reflects the tradition established by Ben Webster in its soul-drenched tone, but is not as vocally pronounced or vibrato driven. The quite capable pianist John DiMartino is the one whose more enunciated notions are harnessed, while tasteful guitar by the underrated James Chirillo ring out in acceptance of Person's embraceable hues. A program of standards and two blues jams, Person rounds into shape this quintet of true professional to render themes that are harder to play slow than fast. The slower material includes the regretful, throaty ballad "Too ...
| | Diana Krall Quiet Nights CD (2009)
Brujerias Latin Mcguffa's D
$13.69 Diana Krall's first studio outing since she and husband Elvis Costello became the proud parents of twin boys, 2009's QUIET NIGHTS finds the jazz singer/pianist turning in a serene and pleasantly subdued set. Krall breezes through a few bossa nova standards, most notably "The Girl from Ipanema" (here gender-reversed to "The Boy...") and the title track (originally "Corcovado"), ...
| | Al Jarreau This Time CD (1980)
Brujerias Latin Mcguffa's D
$6.15 Al Jarreau finally found success in the U.S. after 1975's We Got By. The later albums that followed ,like 1977's live Look to the Rainbow and 1978's All Fly Home found him attaining the all-important cult status and accolades from the jazz community. Those facts made his switch to pop/R&B on This Time even more surprising. For This Time, Jarreau is paired with producer Jay Graydon. Despite his jazz credentials, This Time does prove that this style is ...
| | Jeff Hamilton Symbiosis CD (2009)
Brujerias Latin Mcguffa's D
$12.59 Jeff Hamilton's recordings have always been focused as straight-ahead and mainstream as your typical superhighway, with occasional time for rest stops, gassing up, and sleepovers. While always a good listen, Hamilton and his non-stop rotation of up-and-coming pianists and bassists never really pushed the envelope, staying the course set by his mentor, the late, great bassist Ray Brown, and other California-based coolsters. With Symbiosis, though, there's a change in the weather with the addition of extraordinary young talent in pianist Tamir Hendelman and bassist Christoph Luty. This is not at all to say that Hamilton's music had no fire, guts, or glory, but the difference in internal energy heard on this recording ...

| | Ken Vandermark Color Of Memory CDs (2005)
Brujerias Latin Mcguffa's D
$15.79 The Vandermark 5 return with a whopping double-disc set of new studio recordings. Recorded in Chicago during July of 2004, the band includes Kent Kessler, Jeb Bishop, Tim Daisy, and Dave Rempis. There are seven compositions across these discs, all of them dedicated to musicians, artists, and even a rock band, all of whom have left their mark in some way before passing into history -- whether mainstream or obscure. Also, it's interesting to note that live, early versions of three of the pieces here -- "Camera" (for Edward Weston), "That Was Now" (for the Volcano Suns), and "Pieces of the Past" (for Joseph H. Lewis) -- appeared on the Alchemia box set from the NotTwo label in Poland. Simply put, this is the most diverse outing the V5 have ever done. Vandermark's compositional skill relies deeply on the blues on "Suitcase" (for Ray Charles, Elvin Jones, and Steve Lacy), and his sense of harmonic counterpoint and invention has moved to an entirely new level -- check out the interplay between Vandermark and Bishop. The driving three-horn front line ...
| | Kurtis Parcae CD (2008)
Brujerias Latin Mcguffa's D
$9.59 Kurtis fell in love with music as a small child; in fact his favorite toy was a Fisher Price record player. He wore out 3 of them because he played them so much. He always loved any kind of musical instruments and if he could get his hands on any he would try to figure them out and play something on it. But his biggest love was singing and he use to sing to his Mom in the kitchen when he was 5. He always wanted to be a singer in a band and always gravitated towards music that was vocally strong. He picked up the drums and practiced as much as he could, playing along with music he loved to listen to. He then started playing with friends in punk bands, just jamming and having fun. While all this was going on he was constantly writing lyrics for songs in his head. He decided to start his own band and with a few friends got an 80’s Hair Metal band together. Still only playing the drums they looked for singers but none fit the bill. They were recording their first demo in a little studio in Concord and still had no singer. So they all looked at each other and said ok who can sing the best. So with no vocal lessons Kurtis laid down the vocal tracks on the first demo. After that demo he took lessons and came out from behind the drums to front the band. That band was called Jaded Heart and Kurtis fell in love with being the front man. ...
