| | Fischerspooner Other Side: New York CD Fischerspooner Discography of CDs
This is a DualDisc, which contains a CD on one side of the disc and a DVD on the other.
Esteemed travel guide and big-city weekly Time Out moves to CD and DVD with a new series entitled THE OTHER SIDE. Each edition contains a DualDisc hosted by a DJ or electronica artist, with each one compiling a mix disc on the CD side, then, on the DVD, narrating a tour through the designated city's hippest restaurants, bars, and clubs.
Electro-pop duo Fischerspooner host THE OTHER SIDE: NEW YORK. The CD side of the DualDisc, not surprisingly, features an eclectic mix that goes from experimental rock (The Fiery Furnaces) to avant performance art (Laurie Anderson), with plenty of electronica-influenced sounds in between (Fischerspooner even sneak in a remix of their own tune "Emerge"). The DVD is informative and well-put-together, giving viewers a crash course in where the cool kids hang out in the Big Apple.
The Other Side, a joint venture between Time Out (international weekly publication) and Deaf Dumb & Blind (multifaceted entertainment company), is an interactive guide to the bleeding edge of the world's great cities. Each edition is comprised of two elements: a mixed CD compiled by a native audio pioneer, and a DVD guide to "the other side" of the city - a visual handbook for both the frequent flyer and the armchair traveler. The New York installment is compiled and mixed by Fischerspooner, who have crafted an adventurous and genre-bending mix that perfectly showcases their eclectic musical vision. On the DVD, Casey Spooner, the band's vocalist, takes you on a guid

Other Side: New York album
$15.05 Porcupine Tree's first album for K-Scope/Snapper starts out with a definite bang -- "Even Less," with some of the quartet's biggest, blasting rock epic music yet, yet also shot through with the gentler, acoustic side that makes Porcupine Tree so intimate and lovely. The net result easily calls Yes to mind, but Steven Wilson's not so high-pitched as Jon Anderson and Richard Barbieri completely avoids Rick Wakeman's extreme idiocies -- prog that knows when less is more. With that as a fine signal for the album as a whole, Stupid Dream takes it from there -- Wilson as a songwriter and singer both sounds recharged and more ambitious, while the group collectively pours it on. The loud passages feel truly sky-smashing, the calmer ones perfectly close, and the overall sense of build and drama -- "A Smart Kid" is a fine example -- spot-on. Strings from the East of England Orchestra and guest work on Wilson's sometime Bass Communion partner Theo Travis add even lusher atmospheres without swamping the tunes. As always, the group isn't afraid to experiment where others merely re-create -- check out the funky breaks Colin Edwin and Chris Maitland lay down on "Slave Called Shiver," not to mention Wilson's catchy piano figure ...

Other Side: New York music CDs
$12.69 "Moon Dance" opens the set. Not to be confused with the Van Morrison song, this selection blends syllabic singing with lush harp arpeggios and a relaxed drum groove. Another piece, "Pearls & Tears," is more distant and airy. But despite the title, this song remains uplifting and joyous. Culled from a live appearance in Tokyo, "Moonday" closes MAGIC HARP. On this track, a funky drum beat combines with jazzy chords to create a slick patina of sound. Overall, this release emphasizes Vollenweider's distinctive musicianship and imaginative songwriting. The companion DVD features three videos and some rare live footage.
