Genetic and artistic brethren to New Orleans's No Limit family (he is the younger brother of Master P and C-Murder), Silkk the Shocker (whose real name is Vyshonne Miller) was one of the label's best selling artists. Working firmly in the musical style established by Master P., Silkk adopted the themes of gangsta rap and Dirty South hip-hop as his own and in the process--via numerous guest appearances and his own platinum-selling solo albums--helped the No Limit label build an independent rap empire. BEST OF skims the cream from Silkk's solo releases, offering a succinct 15-song overview of the artist. Best of all, the set is packed with cameos, with guest spots from Master P., Mystikal, C-Murder, and Fiend, so the album also serves as a fine introduction to New Orleans rap.

Silkk WAS nice in 96-99 but this album SOFT... Where's "Murder(187)", Where's "The Shocker", where's "MR.", WHERE's "Only If My 9 Could Talk"??? You can't have a best of the Shocker album without his best songs on it. Plus tracks 13-15 are a reminder of why Silkk fell off, cuz he was my fav rapper til he got mad soft. Those songs are 3 of his worst, so whoever picked the tracks shoulda thought twice before calling it "Best Of Silkk The shocker". Best Of Silkk The Shocker album
$15.05 Six years since their debut and with little mainstream notice, Dirty make their 2005 play for the big time by acting less like OutKast and more like true thugs on the ambitious Hood Stories. No doubt, this is a duo to root for. Dirty are scrappy and ambitious, and Hood Stories ...

Best Of Silkk The Shocker album
$9.99 Released on the eve of R. Kelly's court date, where he faced some serious charges and a very incriminating videotape, the first five chapters of the Closet Cycle confused, amazed, and delighted his fans. The entirety of the series, including all 12 chapters, is sure to have the same effect. Essentially an R&B soap opera, complete with the sets, lighting, convoluted plotlines, ...

| | Diane Marino Just Groovin' CD (2008)
Best Of Silkk The Shocker CD music
$13.69 Different people remember the 1960s in different ways. Jazz-pop singer Diane Marino treats them as a source of love songs on Just Groovin. Marino boasts some '60s influences in her singing, which owes a little to Dinah Washington in its deliberation and a little to Shirley Bassey in its manner, although Marino's style is essentially buoyant and happy; she practically sounds pleased with herself much of the time. That's not a bad feel to get into '60s love songs, but the problem with the album lies in the arrangements, also by Marino. Simply put, nearly every one is the same, with a piano-based jazz accompaniment leading to a similar-sounding horn solo. The soloists are estimable, with people like Kirk Whalum and Houston Person. But after awhile the approach becomes predictable. Thus, when the pattern is broken, the songs stand out. In particular, the duet with Felix Cavaliere (who sang the original) on "Groovin'" is welcome, along with Cavaliere's Hammond B-3 organ solo. And Anthony LaMarchina's cello on "Never My Love" pleases if only because it isn't another horn. The use of the horn soloists couldn't be more deliberate -- they even get credited on each song on the back cover. But the '60s, whatever one may think of them, was a time of experimentation and many different, even clashing styles. The '60s were never dull, but sometimes this album is. ~ William Ruhlmann
Diane Marino Just Groovin' What is it about the songs of the 60's that magically draws us back in time?Just Groovin', the latest offering from Diane Marino, features wonderful re-interpretations of pop standards.Blending Traditional Pop and Contemporary Jazz...these are not copies of other versions. Diane's fantastic voice, accompanied by such greats as Kirk Whalum, The Rascals' Felix Cavaliere, Wycliffe Gordon, Houston Person among others, is a breath of fresh air for these tunes, reminding us once again that a great song can be interpreted in any number of styles."There were so many great and diverse songs with no rules and no boundaries. These were not just"pop" songs, they were songs of substance. They were messages and emotions that transcend time and connect with us today. For myself, these songs make me smile after hearing the first bar!The songs I have chosen are but a few that are wonderfully timeless... From great writers as Burt Bacharach to classic groups as The Rascals, The Beach Boys, The Tymes and The Ronettes, these songs offer a great soundtrack to our memories.I hope you will enjy my interpretations here, ...
