Sun Kil Moon's Mark Kozelek is no stranger to cover tunes, having taken on an entire solo album's worth of AC/DC songs (2001's WHAT'S NEXT TO THE MOON) in addition to various other disparate artists (Yes, Ace Frehley, and the Cars to name a few), while performing under the Red House Painters banner. On TINY CITIES, an unlikely follow-up to 2003's excellent GHOSTS OF THE GREAT HIGHWAY, Kozelek presents eleven spare renditions of Modest Mouse tracks, replacing that indie-rock group's edgy, spazz-pop sound with a delicate, pensive, finger-picked aesthetic. The result is a fascinating record that showcases the quirky narratives of Modest Mouse frontman Isaac Brock while highlighting Kozelek's plaintive vocals, thoughtful arrangements, and formidable interpretive skills.
Photographer: Nyree Watts.Uncut (p.72) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "'Space Travel Is Boring'...is teased out into a subtly transformative mini epic. He makes equally beautiful work of 'Tiny Cities Made Of Ashes." Mojo (Publisher) (p.103) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Here, the San Franciscan mope doyen's latest group transforms the corrugated emo-rock of Portland's Modest Mouse into diaphanous baroque folk vignettes." Sun Kil Moon Tiny Cities Songs Tiny Cities Music Review Average Rating: (3.3 out of 5 stars) an interesting interpretation. if you are a fan of Kozelek's previous work, definitly give this a try. if you were strictly a modest mouse fan (as i was), listen to this album with an open mind and you might be in for a good suprise. Terrible This cover album is by far a disgrace to Modest Mouse. Don't buy this album if you're a true MM fan. It's dull and has none of the same kick that the real Modest Mouse songs have. Don't waste you're money, and spring for the real deal. Submitted by Kyle (Springfield, MA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Sun Kil Mouse I thought Neil Halstead was going to mellow out the world till I listened to Mark. This is an absolutely wonderful interpretation to Modest Mouse songwriting. If you are a Mouse fan, wait till you here Neverending Math Equation. It will make you smile. Submitted by telemarkmaj (Steamboat Springs, CO, Skitown USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Frosty's Hot Review!, October 11, 2001 Reviewer: A music fan from Windmill Court I was blessed to be one of the first to hear and own the latest offering from Mrs. Lucy Shinn. Her previous release - "Field of Miracles" - is also a part of my music collection. Mrs. Shinn's style is unique and her talent is obvious. Writing music is surely a gift from God.
