Personnel: Robert Glasper (piano); Bilal (vocals); Mark Turner (tenor saxophone); Vicente Archer (bass instrument); Damion Reed (drums).
Canvas is pianist Robert Glasper's second recording, and his first on Blue Note. He's joined by bassist Vincente Archer and drummer Damion Reid for the main portion of Canvas, while tenor Mark Turner and vocalist Bilal make two appearances each. Perhaps the first thing a listener might note of Glasper's style on the original, "Rise and Shine," is its rich, melodic flavor. While this lyricism alone would draw the listener in, it's Glasper's ability to develop new ideas as the piece progresses, adding complexity to his lyricism, that really recommends his approach. In the case of the title cut, Glasper and company keep the composition intriguing for nearly ten minutes. It's also nice on Canvas that both Archer and Reid match Glasper's adventurousness, providing an intricate net that both supports his solos and drives them onward. Turner blends effortlessly into the band on the title cut and Herbie Hancock's "Riot," adding a slightly bigger sound and turning in fine lead work. The vocals come rather late in the program on tracks seven and ten, and are not typically what one might expect from vocals (even in jazz). Instead, Bilal's wordless drone, hum, and smooth choral backing mixes like an additional instrument that adds another textural element to the music. Canvas also sounds great, and producer Eli Wolf has done a fine job putting these elements together into an organic whole. Canvas is both melodic and adventurous, and will please both Glasper's fans and anyone who appreciates good piano jazz. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.Mojo (Publisher) (p.91) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[H]is distinctiveness lies in a lyrical, even delivery of his attractive, mature compositions."

5 stars My new fave
I can't get enough of it. I have over 500 CDs, mostly jazz, and I played this one over 100 times this summer. Every song has a special meaning to me. "I Remember" has a sound that reminds me of my mother, who passed away last year.

5 stars Innovative
Robert Glasper brings his innovative style to the forefront in his CD "Canvas" He is not held back by convention and his style is new and refreshing. Not since early Chick Corea have I heard a pianist who excites me so.

3 stars Glasper with another
This new album from Robert Glasper showcases his talent in numerous ways: through his fast blasting licks, his many compositions on this album, and his ability to fit well within his rhythm section. Even though he is an phenomena pianist, this album doesn't really stand out in a crowd, because of its lack of diversity.

The Corrs: Jim Corr (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Sharon Corr (vocals, violin); Andrea Corr (vocals, tin whistle); Caroline Corr (vocals, drums, bodhran, percussion).
Recorded at Ardmore Studios in Dublin, Ireland in January 2002.
You knew the Corrs had made it when they played the final JFK Awards ceremony of the Clinton administration. Playing it would have been achievement enough, but their status as a happening thing was cemented at the end of the ceremony, during the encores, when everybody was taking their final bows. Bill moseyed up over to Andrea, put his arm around her, and when she was looking away, sized her up -- at precisely the same moment Chuck Berry was checking her out. If that doesn't mean that you've broken America, entering its pop culture, I don't know what does, expect for maybe a VH1-endorsed piece of product like Live in Dublin. Lo and behold, that's exactly what ...

Live Recording Personnel: John Coltrane (soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone); Alan Grant (spoken vocals); McCoy Tyner (piano); Jimmy Garrison (double bass); Elvin Jones (drums).
ONE DOWN, ONE UP: LIVE AT THE HALF NOTE, recorded in the last year of the classic quartet's existence, captures John Coltrane, drummer Elvin Jones, pianist McCoy Tyner, and bassist Jimmy Garrison going full blast. Recorded a year after A LOVE SUPREME, Coltrane was already moving on to extended improvisation, stretching out a single composition for 15 or 20 minutes while deconstructing it from every conceivable angle, turning his saxophone into an instrument of relentless exploration.

Recording information: Avatar Studios, New York, NY (03/13/2005-03/14/2005).

Brad Mehldau did an exceptional job of keeping his stellar trio together for seven years, as proven by his fine Art of the Trio dates and 2004's Anything Goes. But Jorge Rossy, the group's drummer, began spending more and more time away from music and at his home in Spain. Mehldau, who is almost prolific in his recording process, recruited drummer Jeff Ballard to replace Rossy on Day Is Done. Ballard has worked off and on with bassist Larry Grenadier in the trio ...

Larry Appelbaum, the recording lab supervisor at the Library of Congress, came across this tape by accident while transferring the library's tape archive to digital. What a find. Forget the Five Spot recording that sounds like it was recorded inside of a tunnel from the far end. The sound here is wonderfully present and contemporary. More importantly, this band -- which also included drummer Shadow ...

Tedd Baker Mugshots CD  (2006)

Canvas

Tenor and soprano saxophonist Tedd Baker brings raw energy to every performance by creating a unique soulful sound full of original phrases based firmly in the tradition. Tedd strives to connect immediately with his patrons and fellow band mates as is evident in the approving hollers on the bandstand and the applause in the audience. Tedd is also well respected among his peers and has a great rapport among fellow musicians. Both a composer and performer, Tedd is celebrating the release of his all-original debut CD “MUGSHOTS” this year. Born in Binghamton, NY, Tedd was raised near Boston and started studying piano at the age of 6. He switched to the tenor sax at 10 and started exploring jazz. Tedd also studied the bass guitar in his early teens, yet began playing the saxophone professionally in Boston during high school. Tedd then attended New England Conservatory on a scholarship, and earned a bachelor’s degree. While attending NEC, Tedd placed as runner-up in the Boston Jazz Society scholarship competition, and regularly performed in the Boston and New York City areas. Upon graduation, he toured the Middle East with a jazz trio, and after returning, actively performed and recorded in the Northeast's jazz, blues and beyond scenes. In 1998, he moved to Queens, NY, continuing to perform while earning a Master of Arts degree from The Aaron Copeland School of Music, Queens College (CUNY). While at Queens College, Tedd placed first in the 2000 Hilton Head Jazz Society Competition.Tedd Baker has performed professionally as a sideman with many jazz masters and numerous "up and coming" jazz musicians both in the USA and overseas including Barry Harris, Pete Yellin, Slide Hampton, Jon Faddis, Darren Barrett, Duane ...
