On this Gerald Wilson ARTIST SELECTS compilation, Wilson himself picks a range of material from his tenure at Pacific Jazz between 1961 and 1966. As an arranger and leader Wilson was quite adventurous, as the performances by his big band prove. Whether on interpretations of contemporary classics ("'Round Midnight"), or on his own material ("Paco"), Wilson's charts are driving and rhythmic, yet also textured and complex. Fine musicianship (Wilson had a parade of talent pass through his bands) pushes the quality even higher on this thoroughly enjoyable introduction to Wilson's '60s sound.

$11.39 It is a bit strange that none of the eight songs performed on this LP found their way into Adderley's permanent repertoire for the altoist is quite inspired throughout this surprising set. With strong assists from cornetist Nat Adderley, Charles Lloyd on tenor and flute, pianist Joe Zawinul, bassist Sam Jones and drummer Louis Hayes, Cannonball plays near his peak; this is certainly the finest album by this particular sextet. ~ Scott Yanow

$13.15 Although Roger Daltrey was by no means the first member of the Who to take the solo plunge (both John Entwistle and Pete Townshend beat him to the punch), he was the first to make any kind of commercial impact. While "Giving It All Away" peeled off his self-titled debut album to hit the U.K. Top Five, the album itself went Top 50 in America and, almost as an afterthought, introduced the writing talents of the young and then-unknown Leo Sayer to the public at large. Eight months ahead of his own breakthrough hit, "The Show Must Go On," Sayer and writing partner Dave Courtney composed ...

$19.99 Fiji was formed in 2003 when Simon and Menk Schüttel bumped into Simone De Lorenzi in the streets of Berne. Rather than asking "Do you like my tight sweater?" she said "Voglio fare musica. Are you with me?". Simon and Menk have been part of the Swiss pop scene for a number of years with Smartship Friday . Now with Simone the trio made their Smartship Productions (incidentally also the name of their own record label) recording studio their home, where they spen most of their time performing, recording and mixing their uniquely powerful, highly personal, authentic and sexed-up electrorock ...
| | Dawson Cowals Looking Up At The Same Star CD (2009)
Artist Selects
$10.59 This is the second collaboration between Dawson Cowals and producer/musician extraordinaire, Nick Garrett-Powell, and Dawson's 12th full-length recording. Taking a new bent and direction from his entirely acoustic previous release, "Coffee Shop Songs," this new project explores Dawson's creative song stylings; offerings range from acoustic guitar and violin ballads to hard-rock funk, haunting choral vignettes all the way to French language hip-hop. Nick once again showcases his amazing harmonies and diverse arrangements, but really shines in his expressive electric guitar leads borrowing inspiration from the likes of Knopfler and Satriani. Joining Dawson and Nick on this project is the percussion prodigy, Nick James, who manages to capture Dawson's many intricate rhythmic and timing changes and really helps rock the project up several notches. This CD is a special collection of love & wedding songs that Dawson has written over the last 10 years for friends and performed at their weddings. The majority of the album includes recent love songs that he has written for his own wife, ...
