| | Ohmega Watts Find CD (2005)
Sunset Lodge music CDs
$13.45 Depending on your point of view, The Find is either an album whose ideology and overall vibe are stuck in the '90s or a new-millennium hip-hop album that bears influence of the foundation while providing an updated spin from a talented artist. The latter sentiment is most accurate. Producer/MC Ohmega Watts and a host (and that means host) of friends make The Find a worthwhile listen for any hip-hop fan. With Watts in control, he takes obvious nods to iconic producers (Pete Rock, Diamond D -- he rhymes similar to Large Professor) and the sound of hip-hop's '90s renaissance, while rearranging it in his own distinct way. The six-minute "A Request" is an updated '90s head-nodder with a two-minute rideout that appropriates everything from Souls of Mischief to Gang Starr, with some timpani/cowbell percussion to boot. Ohmega lays down a gritty, strutting groove for "Full Swing" as MCs Neogen and Deacon join him on ...
| | Coup Pick A Bigger Weapon CD (2006)
Sunset Lodge songs
$11.65 If you look hard enough at the cover of Pick a Bigger Weapon, you can see dangling legs through a hole in the wall of a ransacked Omnimart corporate office. DJ Pam "The Funkstress"' holds a bat, Boots Riley holds a pen, and bottles of a product called Ass-Breath Killer are on a desk and the ground. It's evident that this cover isn't likely to put them in hot water, like the original cover of Party Music did almost five years prior, unless someone prominent and silly finds the legs shocking. The Coup's long-standing balance between humor and righteous anger remains on this, their fifth album, and they still deliver the laughs and rants over juiced synth-funk. This time out, they use the band format more than before, with the likes of Audioslave's Tom Morello, Tony! Toni! Toné!'s D'Wayne Wiggins, and a few funk vets chipping in on occasion. The album's press sheet draws comparisons to Prince's Dirty Mind and Too Short, and while that's not inaccurate, the references could just as easily be Digital Underground, Paris, Above the Law, E-40, late-'70s Parliament/Funkadelic, any previous Coup album, or just about any other funk-steeped rap album that has come from the West Coast. Nursery rhyme-style choruses like "Bush and Hussein together in bed, giving H-E-A-D head/Y'all muthaf*ckas heard what we said/Billions ...

| | This Is Skateboard Music CD (2005)
Sunset Lodge CD music
$13.85 One of the pleasures of being a pop culture obsessive or a fanatical record collector is stumbling across a subculture that you never realized even existed. Case in point, bubblegum songs about skateboarding written and recorded in the '70s then promptly forgotten. These bits of junk culture ephemera are unearthed on Diggler Records' This Is Skateboard Music, a collection of 13 songs nobody's heard before, plus a demo from T. Rex featuring his wife Gloria Jones. If RPM's ongoing Lip Smackin' 70s series, which is not musically far removed from this, specializes on glam, glitter, bubblegum, and proto-punk that's merely obscure, This Is Skateboard Music specializes in the unheard -- songs that never quite cut it as the exploitation they were intended to be. Skateboarding later became inextricably tied to hardcore punk -- there's a whole subgenre of skatepunk -- but many of the record-makers who attempted to cash in on this emerging trend took its definition of surfing on land quite literally, designing their singles as throwbacks to the Beach Boys, but This Is Skateboard Music is hardly limited to just surf-rock on sidewalks. There's straightforward bubblegum, glammy stomps with fizzier guitars, songs that sound like ...
