Released on Fuel 2000, The Sky Is Falling is actually a reissue of the Doin' Business As... Derringer, Bogert & Appice album that was first released in Europe in 2001. In this short-lived power trio, guitarist and producer Rick Derringer reportedly "replaced" Jeff Beck in the "follow-up" to 1973's Beck, Bogert & Appice album (their rhythm section is, of course, made up of ex-Vanilla Fudge members bassist Tim Bogert and rock & roll über-drummer Carmine Appice. Nah. While this doesn't reach those lofty heights. Strictly out of its time and element -- from the songs to the production -- as a hard rock album with well-written compositions, excellent vocals, and musicianship, it works very well. Hearing the set in 2001 was just plain weird given what else was going on in popular music at the time. Beyond British and sensationally sociological, Blur and singer/songwriter Damon Albarn weave tales of stifling middle class ennui into clever pop vignettes. THE GREAT ESCAPE is another demonstration of Blur's unique intelligence, more of Albarn's witty commentary, and substantial proof that the group may be bordering on genius. As usual, Albarn's senses are keen on THE GREAT ESCAPE. His ear for melody and sound textures shines throughout the album's fifteen brilliant tracks. The ska horns and spy soundtrack guitar riffing on "Fade Away" exemplify Blur's knack for pop music, yet elevate the song beyond simple genre-fication, with a dignity reserved for the orchestra pit. The snide humor behind "Mr. Robinson And His Quango" rubs shoulders with the desperation of "He Thought Of Cars," all the while dwelling on what they hope to escape. It's this nagging dread that carries the album--the sense that the people Albarn describes are as desperate to find meaning as Albarn is to capture it within the song's narrative. THE GREAT ESCAPE may not turn into Blur's great American breakthrough album, but if you're not thrown by Albarn's overwhelmingly British aesthetic, it just might be enough to take you away from the confines of your day to day doldrums. FLICKERING FLAME skims the cream from Roger Waters's solo efforts, which included three studio albums and one live album. The songs include "Too Much Rope," "Three Wishes," and "Each Small Candle." The 2002 Australian collection Flickering Flame is a useful cross-section of highlights from Roger Waters' post-Floyd solo albums, augmented by a couple of rarities. This collection doesn't strictly follow the charts -- there are songs released as singles that aren't here, such as "Radiowaves" -- but it does contain most of the major moments from The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking, Radio K.A.O.S., and Amused to Death, which makes it a nice introduction/summation for the curious.
