With most contemporary country artists, you could guarantee that a song called "American Ride" would be a slice of jingoism, but Toby Keith isn't like most country singers. His "American Ride" casts a cynical eye at desperate housewives and wannabe pop stars, not celebrating down-home values but wondering where we're all headed on this American Ride at the end of the 2000s, a sentiment not all that far removed from some of Keith's previous social commentary, which makes it a mild surprise that it is the only song here that doesn't come from his own pen. As superb and striking as it is, it's not necessarily a good keystone for the rest of the record, which does have a few tougher numbers that pick up on the lean, mean vibe of 2008's THAT DON'T MAKE ME A BAD GUY -- "Every Dog Has Its Day," the sly "If I Had One," and the heavy blues stomp "Loaded" -- but spends more time on the softer side, even when he kicks up a bit of dust on the dancefloor on "You Can't Read My Mind" or does a funny, respectful salute to military life on "Ballad of Balad." In other words, the real touchstone for the rest of the record is "Tender as I Wanna Be," where he lets his guard down ...

Recording information: JLM Recordings (11/2002-01/2003); Monkeyden (11/2002-01/2003); Studio De Edgecliffe (11/2002-01/2003). Say this for AM: the man comes by his lazy roots rock sound honestly. Born in Oklahoma and raised in and around New Orleans, AM sings with a laid-back drawl and writes songs that rarely rise above a moderate level of emotional intensity or a cruising, middle-of-the-road tempo. Interestingly, his most obvious vocal referent is Ian McCullough -- try spinning "Playing the Game" for friends over the age of 35 and ask them to guess the band, and it's a good bet they'll ask you which Echo & the Bunnymen B-side it is. The album's feature single is "Mainstay," which features the program's most aggressive drums along with some really pretty 12-string guitar and the album's only truly indelible hook. "City Syndrome" is also noteworthy, though, with its Weezer-meets-the Beach Boys backing vocals and summer evening vibe. The album closes with the lovely, minimalist "Losing You." A year after AM's release in 2004, the label released a remix EP featuring "Mainstay" along with four drastic (and often aggressively techno) rearrangements of that song, as well as a CD-R video track. It's worth picking up, but good luck finding it -- as of this writing, very few online outlets were offering it. CD REVIEWS:Scene Magazine Article Published AUGUST 22, 2007By D.X. Ferris "Believe it or not, Cleveland reggae soldier B.E. Mann sounds straight outta Trenchtown. His lovers rock is always solid if not blazingly original. On his 24th LP, Mann pays tribute to U.K. artists, most of them reggae greats. Mann passes around a double-dose of THC with Forde's "Just a Little Herb" and his own "The Ganjah Sound." French production team Bost and Bim join him on "Everybody Knows My Business," and he retools the Specials' "Ghost Town." Despite the covers, Mann is still the star of the disc. He sings all the vocals, plays nearly every instrument, and pulls out a real surprise to close the party. In the Smiths' classic "Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want," Mann replaces one of music's great mandolin solos with radiant keyboard and sunbeam trumpet. Mann could probably record an album of grunge covers, and Jah would approve."xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxBeacon Journal Newspaper Article Published AUGUST 30, 2007By Malcolm X.Abram"For his . . . heck, I don't know, 79th recording, Mann does the one-man-band thing for much of the disc, with a little help from Jimmy Corn Allstars on horns. He deftly mixes covers with a few originals.Cool Runnings plays to Mann's strengths, highlighting his love of the classic rock-steady sound and the slick British pop-reggae of groups such as Steel Pulse, UB40 and Aswad. He offers three tunes from Aswad, one of the most popular English-bred reggae bands of the '80s, and his versions of the title track, I Asked a Question and Just a Little Herb. They're eerily faithful but also quite good. Herb, in particular, mingles some nice dub effects with a relatively organic-sounding computerized beat and well-stacked harmonies. Mann takes more liberties with some of the other covers, such as giving George Michael's A Different Corner a percolating groove and turning the Smiths' mopey classic Please Let Me Get What I Want into a mopey rock-steady tune.I'm less enamored of his cover of the Specials' classic Ghost Town, in which Mann changes the melody and groove just enough to remove the song's bleak, ''ghostly'' feel.Mann's originals Ganjah Sound, the breezy Everybody Knows My Business and the '80s dance-hall groove of Moving On are solid as always...if you just enjoy hip-swaying rhythms with pop melodies, Mann is likely the, uh, man for you."xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxOVERVIEWThe cd you hold in your hands is B.E.Mann's 24th full length release. It commemorates his 20 year anniversary in the music biz (1987-2007). A classic mixture of vintage dancehall & loversrock tunes sure to get the reggae party jamming! On this release B.E.Mann is accredited to performing ALL vocals & instrumentation (except where noted).B.E. wrote three of the songs, while the rest is a variety of some of his all-time favourite songs written & performed ...
