John Waite had known stardom as a member of the Babys, a British quartet that had a brief run on the American charts in the late '70s and early '80s. During the heyday of punk rock, they were unapologetic stadium rockers with their feet planted firmly in the mainstream, and it worked -- they just missed the Top Ten with "Every Time I Think of You" and "Isn't It Time." That was nothing compared to what would follow when Waite's solo career finally took off, yet it took a little effort for that career to gain momentum. He released his first solo album, Ignition, in the summer of 1982. Musically, the record certainly took its cues from the Babys, but it was also a product of its times, exhibiting a considerable new wave production sheen. That much was evident from the surging opener "White Heat," with its glistening, processed guitars and tight rhythms. It's the sound of stylized, commercial mainstream rock in the early '80s, and the rest of Ignition follows this pattern to an appealing end. True, the record has a couple of moments that seem like filler, but not in a bad way; that's because the production sounds good, and Waite's performances are always inspired. The problem is that no matter how well-crafted Ignition is, none of its songs are total knockouts -- the kind of single that would break down the doors to mainstream radio, regardless of whether it was given a push. And so, even though it was a very good solo debut, Ignition withered on the vine. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Limited Edition. Waite first achieved popularity and success fronting ex-pat hard rockers the Baby's, notching up two Top 20 US hit singles before breaking up the group to launch a solo career, a path that would see him score a US #1 single in 1984 with the plaintiff but hugely powerful 'Missing You'. Ignition, Waite's debut solo album was recorded in New York City in late 1981 and reflects a man awash with brave ideals and ruthless musical conviction. Upbeat, bristling with determination and extremely hard rocking, the songs reflect a man on a mission, delivered with one of the most concise productions of the era (courtesy of Pat Benatar guitarist Neil Geraldo). Widely acknowledged as Waite's greatest album, Ignition gets the full Rock Candy reissue treatment with a remastered clarity that will resolutely and undeniably confirm Waite's position as a rock vocalist extraordinaire. Includes 16 page color booklet with original and enhanced artwork with new photos and extensive memorabilia. 2006.

Here's some ferocious John Waite, pre-"Missing You."

5 stars Essential early 80's rock
This is one of my favorite early 80's rock albums. Raw and emotional with a great backing band and, of course, John's outstanding voice. If you can find this CD, which has been very difficult, pick it up.

4 stars Top Rock Album
Although underrated in its day, its now looked upon with favor from most critics. I found this to be a rocking album with great vocal by John Waite, singer for the Baby's and later Bad English. With more than competent instrumental work, Changes is probably the best track. Not all songs were winners, but enough to make a good album.

SO FAR SO GOOD (AND MORE) includes 9 previously unreleased videos. By 1993, when Bryan Adams released his first collection of greatest hits, he had enjoyed 12 years in the music business during a span that had seen hot trends like new wave and late '80s hair metal fall by the wayside. Adams managed to stay popular by sticking with an ear-pleasing brand of rock & roll that veered between edgy, bar-band style riff rock to more earnest, American-style roots rock in the tradition of Bruce Springsteen and Bob Seger. SO FAR SO GOOD gathers all the essential Adams tracks from his hugely popular '80s albums. This set of melodic rockers, inlcuding "Run to You," "This Time" "Kids ...

CD $9.69  5 stars Top 500
Nights Are Forever was the breakthrough album for Dan Seals and John Coley after some sincere and excellent work on A&M Records in the early '70s. Two of their biggest hits were the title track and the beautiful "I'd Really Love to See You Tonight." Those songs are a good indication of the fine performances this 1976 album contains. The duo's originals like "Long Way Home" and the Dan Fogelberg-ish "Westward Wind" could have been hits as well displaying superb musicianship and delicate vocals. This album is very much a companion piece to the Parker McGee album recorded around the same time, on the same label, with pretty much the same musicians. Producer Kyle Lehning has the sounds so similar a survey panel would probably not be able to figure out which song came from which album. What Nights Are Forever has that the Parker McGee album does not is "There'll Never Be Another For Me," a song co-written by Parker McGee, England Dan, and John Ford Coley -- it is a rare look at what a perfect synergy these musicians have, and it is an exceptional song. You can feel how cautious and serious the ...

England Dan Dr. Heckle & Mr. Jive CD  (1978) Reissued

Ignition album
CD $9.55  3.5 stars
The sincerity of their days on A&M Records has turned to total formula by the time Dr. Heckyl & Mr. Jive came around -- and Robert Louis Stevenson expert, author Ray McNally, makes it clear in his book on Mr. Hyde that the true pronunciation is Dr. Jeekill (as in, "I Kill and Hide"). It is quite a paradox that this justified attack on the Hollywood system uses the mispronunciation of this famous title which Hollywood forced upon the world. Were these singers that clever to have slipped this in as a sly parody? Probably not -- because the sentiment in the poem here is right on, but the execution of the title track, is as musically contrived as it sounds. This album shows the worst, and the best, of this productive duo. "Running After You" falls into the former category, but their hit rendition of the Todd Rundgren tune "Love Is the Answer" is up there with "I'd Really Love to See You Tonight" as among their very best work. Their finding this little gem on Utopia's 1977 release Oops! Wrong Planet is commendable. In the same vein as "Love Is the Answer," "What's Forever For" is also extraordinary, featuring excellent vocal work, skilled musicianship, and top notch ...

CD $10.65  4.7 stars
If Dowdy Ferry Road was their bleak moment in song, Some Things Don't Come Easy is the calm before the storm, a port prior to the schizophrenia that was Dr. Heckyll and Mr. Jive. Wandering songs like "Who's Lonely Now" are indicative of this album, and it is only one of two titles the singers pen together. They look alike on the smiling, happy airbrushed front cover, but you can almost see sadness in their eyes on the photos on the back. It must have been an intense period as they came up with yet another Top Ten hit, their fifth of six. "We'll Never Have to Say Goodbye Again" was written by Jeffrie Comanor and is far and away the best song on the album. This duo knew how to interpret; they were fantastic at it. The hit single is defined, the production is compact, and the loose ends that make up all the other songs on Some Things Don't Come Easy pale in comparison. The song's hook and instrumentation are so radio-friendly that the 45 could be put on repeat and after the 30th spin not bore like many of the tracks here. Sure, there is more outside material. Dave Loggins' "Lovin' Somebody on a Rainy Night," as well as Bob Gundry and Jeff Comanor's "Beyond the Tears," are adequate, but they really needed material beyond their genre, and needed it desperately at this point ...

French pop icon Serge Gainsbourg released L'HOMME A TETE DE CHOU in 1976. It contains the songs "Flash Forward," "Aeroplanes," and "Variations Sur Marilou." Even tolerant music fans shudder inwardly at the mention of the concept album, a largely prog rock genre that spawned many of the greatest aesthetic indiscretions of the '70s. L'Homme à Tête de Chou (The Man with the Cabbage Head) is a concept album and shares some of prog's general characteristics, but it's unlike anything ...
