This second album from rockers Eternal builds on their intriguing debut with 11 tracks varying from the instrumental title track to the melodic "Everlasting" and the dark, heavy "To Drown".
The Eternal formed in 2003 from the ashes of renowned underground Melbourne doom band Cryptal Darkness. The Eternal strive to successfully combine the primal excitement and energy of a cohesive rhythm section with strong vocal and guitar melodies, and the symphonic atmosphere of layered keyboards. A wide range of vocal styles and intricate guitar harmonies gives the group its varied yet distinct sound. Their debut album for Firebox The Sombre Light of Isolation was released in June 2004, and received glowing reviews in both mainstream and underground media. The follow-up, recorded early in 2005, Sleep of Reason both defines and extends The Eternal's sound from their debut work. Less convoluted than its predecessor, it packs 11 songs into 59 minutes. Sleep of Reason was produced and recorded by Estonian guitar virtuoso Endel Rivers (Black Majesty, Vanishing Point) at Palm Studios in Melbourne, and mastered by Mika Jussila (Amorphis, Nightwish, Therion) at Finnvox Studios in Helsinki. Sleep Of Reason album
$6.35 With their carefully considered fusion of hard rock bite and commercial appeal, gothic-tinged post-metal bands like Green Carnation, Anathema, and Lake of Tears are starting to look like the 2000s equivalent of '80s AOR groups like Journey, Styx, and Foreigner! Granted, there's no comparison in terms of geography (Europe vs. USA), or platinum awards earned (err, none vs. a whole lot), but consider that rock & roll's stature is significantly inferior in the 2000s than 20 years prior; and that both generations of bands evolved, by and large, from progressive metal/rock origins and...woooaaaah! Anyway, with or without such far-fetched conspiracy theories, suffice to say that Green Carnation fans have had to be very open minded as they watched the monolithic doom metal of their debut give way to their second's hour-long album suite (hello -- progressive!), followed by a sudden swerve toward conventionally sized, commercial metal songs with their third, A Blessing in Disguise, and then, finally, even more of the same for 2005's The Quiet Offspring. So for those fans who have stuck around (unlike most of the band's original membership) and new arrivals alike, suffice to say that the songs making up The Quiet Offspring follow a ...

| | Toby Keith American Ride CD (2009)
Sleep Of Reason CD music
$13.09 With most contemporary country artists, you could guarantee that a song called "American Ride" would be a slice of jingoism, but Toby Keith isn't like most country singers. His "American Ride" casts a cynical eye at desperate housewives and wannabe pop stars, not celebrating down-home values but wondering where we're all headed on this American Ride at the end of the 2000s, a sentiment not all that far removed from some of Keith's previous social commentary, which makes it a mild surprise that it is the only song here that doesn't come from his own pen. As superb and striking as it is, it's not necessarily a good keystone for the rest of the record, which does have a few tougher numbers that pick up on the lean, mean vibe of 2008's THAT DON'T MAKE ME A BAD GUY -- "Every Dog Has Its Day," the sly "If I Had One," and the heavy blues stomp "Loaded" -- but spends more time on the softer side, even when he kicks up a bit of dust on the dancefloor on "You Can't Read My Mind" or does a funny, respectful salute to military life on "Ballad of Balad." In other words, the real touchstone for the rest of the record is "Tender as I Wanna Be," where he lets his guard down and lets the romance flow. This doesn't turn AMERICAN RIDE into a schizophrenic jumble, as Keith has always balanced these two extremes, but after spending a little bit ...

$8.49 If the nu metal realm is a battlefield, then American Head Charge are locked and loaded. The Ozzfest tour gave metal enthusiasts a sneak peak at the songs included on THE WAR OF ART, and the exposure clearly left a few scorched holes in the earth, making this release among the most anticipated of 2001. AHC vocalist Martin Cock can swing on a dime from a Max Cavalera-style scream to a clean singing voice that would have Mike Patton wondering if he was genetically ...
