| | Steve Hillage Motivation Radio CD (1977) (Import) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Japan
Fanatical CD music
$10.25 Those in tune with being transported through music will want to station themselves near the speakers for Motivation Radio. Call it the "light side of the moon," this album draws the listener into its own astral plane with a glossy and gauzy sound similar to Pink Floyd without the darkness, or Alan Parsons Project without the dorkiness. The new age/space ideology isn't far removed from Gong's original alternate reality (remember the Octave Doctors?), spelled out best during the album's true point of transmigration, "Saucer Surfing." Hillage's guitar work is typically transcendent, Giraudy's keyboards a vital component (note the Doctor Who-isms of "Searching for the Spark"), and Joe Blocker's drums a frequent breath of change. Steve Hillage doesn't have the vocal presence to reach out to listeners; at best, ...

Fanatical songs
$16.29 For Live & Learn, Vixen's first new studio release in nearly ten years, one of the few all-female heavy metal bands to prosper in the '80s continues to focus on highly commercial, mainstream rock. But unlike the last studio album credited to Vixen, 1998's Tangerine, the players are completely different. The only remaining original Vixen member left in attendance is guitarist Jan Kuehnemund (who did not even appear on the aforementioned album), who is now supported by an all-new cast -- singer Jenna Sanz-Agero, bassist Lynn Louise Lowrey, ...
| | Billy Squier Emotions In Motion CD (1982) Reissue
Fanatical album
$8.65 Emotions in Motion, the excellent follow-up to Billy Squier's sophomore outing Don't Say No, saw Squier rise from theater headliner to bona fide arena rock sensation by delivering his most consistent solo record to date. Or at least one just as good as its predecessor. On this slice of AOR heaven, Squier expands on the Led Zeppelin-influenced exploits of Don't Say No. Right off the bat, Squier delivers an immediate blow to the head on the album's opening triumvirate "Everybody Wants You," "Emotions in Motion" (a distant cousin of Queen's "Get Down Make Love" no doubt), and the moody "Learn How to Live." Backed by longtime cronies -- drummer Bobby Chouinard, guitarist Jeff Golub, and keyboard player Allan St. John -- Squier effortlessly leads his ace band through the boogie-woogie of future concert staple "Keep Me Satisfied." Squier also takes a few chances by veering into Rolling Stones territory on the horn-laced "Catch 22." Borrowing heavily from "Tumbling Dice," "Catch 22" foreshadows a style that would become more prevalent on future records like Enough Is Enough and Creatures of Habit. Emotions in Motion ...
| | Danny Kirwan Second Chapter CD (1975) With Book; Limited Edition; Digipak
Fanatical CD music
$19.79 The first solo album from Fleetwood Mac singer/songwriter Daniel David Kirwan has the future producer for Human League and Buzzcocks, Martin Rushent, utilizing those skills here, as well as engineering. The sound is crystal clear, and a feather in the cap for Rushent as well as Kirwan. It starts off with an uncharacteristic "Ram Jam City," which has more Lindsey Buckingham sounds than one would expect, especially since the two guitarists come from two different musical worlds. "Odds and Ends" is more lighthearted, the kind of music Paul McCartney toyed with on The White Album's "Rocky Raccoon." What Second Chapter immediately sets forth is the importance of Kirwan as a pop artist, and how, despite Fleetwood Mac's success after he left, his sounds could still have been beneficial to that supergroup. "Hot Summers Day" is a fine example of that, a beautiful song that could offset Buckingham's gritty ramblings. It would have made a nice counterpoint as Stevie Nicks complemented Christine McVie's tunes with her adventures, bringing an important change of pace to that popular band's hits. The jacket looks like a dusty old family album-style book holding Kirwan's Second Chapter. And the music reflects ...

| | Mark Harris Line Between The Two CD (2005)
Fanatical music CDs
$11.29 The Line Between the Two is a deeply personal musical statement from one of the members of the celebrated Christian pop group 4Him, the result of what sounds like something of a mid-life crisis in which he explores such issues as aging and fatherhood. And like most deeply personal musical statements, it's one that doesn't always connect in a deep way with the listener. While "For the First Time" rocks out in a fairly universal way, on "Carry the Light" and "Hello to Goodbye" Mark Harris starts wimping out a bit, relying on push-button emotional tricks to carry the songs. By "Wish You Were Here," which features a triangle and a string section, he sounds like Neil Finn trying to sell ...
| | Pandamonium Thoughts & Words CD (2007) (Import) United Kingdom
Fanatical songs
$13.35 THOUGHTS & WORDS is a 2005 release by alternative rock act, Pandamonium.
This self-titled release was the sole album issued by Thoughts & Words, the duo of Bob Ponton and Martin Curtis, though they did record an unreleased Shel Talmy-produced LP slightly afterward that was put out as The Unreleased Album about 35 years later. Thoughts & Words itself is by and large pleasant folk-rock, but lacked either the identity or strong material necessary to make a strong impression on the late-'60s British rock scene. Certainly they were a versatile group, as "Morning Sky" was about as close as any U.K. act came to approximating the sounds of the Byrds circa 1967. On ...
