| | Jacob Young Sideways CD (2008)
Moon And Mind songs
$15.05 A thoroughly modern guitarist, Jacob Young (from Norway) was influenced chiefly by masters Jim Hall and John Abercrombie. Young's style is of the dense, mood-laden fusion variety particular to ECM Records. Recalling the earliest discs from that label by Bill Frisell and John Abercrombie, SIDEWAYS balances absorbing motifs, chilled-out textures, and flowing, probing solos. ...
| | John Mclaughlin Floating Point CD (2008)
Moon And Mind album
$13.69 From his wiry, Eastern-influenced solos on Miles Davis's BITCHES BREW through his world fusion forays with the Mahavishnu Orchestra and Shakti, guitar virtuoso John McLaughlin has always shown a keen interest in Indian music. Some 40 years into his career, that influence still holds sway, as 2009's FLOATING POINT attests. Though the synth guitar and polished production make the album less edgy than some of McLaughlin's work from the 1970s, there's no shortage of stunning instrumental work and bold, brain-bending ideas. Recorded in India with mostly Indian musicans, FLOATING POINT is another impressive notch in the guitar icon's lifelong pursuit of East-West fusion.
For Floating Point, which was recorded in India, McLaughlin used several of the best Indian ...

| | Carlo Actis Dato Garibaldi CD (2003)
Moon And Mind songs
$14.39 Carlo Actis Dato is a fantastic saxophonist and bass clarinetist, an exquisite improviser, a witty soloist, and an all-around provocative yet entertaining (or provocative because he's entertaining) jazzman. What listeners didn't know yet is that he can rock and funk out too! Garibaldi, credited to the Actis Band, is one mean platter of jazz-funk as seen through the lenses of Italian avant-garde jazz. Actis Dato and Massimo Rossi form the horn section and are backed by guitarist Antonio Fontana, bassist (both acoustic and electric) Federico Marchesano, and drummer Dario Bruna. They form a tightly knit group that sounds like a cross between Pino Minafra's Sud Ensemble and the avant rock of young Italian mavericks like Bz Bz Ueu and Zu. Actis Dato's tunes have catchy harmolodic themes, pockets of improvisation to blow some steam, and complex polyrhythms. But most of all it grooves. "Vulcano Boro" kicks things off with a twisted police show-type riff capped by one of the maddest baritone sax solos the man has committed to tape. "Porci Padani" pairs a theme inspired by Mediterranean folk and a high-speed third wave ska romp. And "Taihenda" hints at the avant-prog rock of both early Palinckx and Forever Einstein -- plus it lets Fontana really stretch out. This album may take a few Actis Dato fans by surprise, but it's all for the better. And for those looking for an accessible gateway to his fabulous playing, search no more! A must-have. ~ François ...
| | Primitive And The Passionate/Les Baxter Balladeers CD (2004)
Moon And Mind album
$10.69 Another in Collectables' series of Les Baxter two-fers, The Primitive and the Passionate/Les Baxter's Balladeers collects a pair of the composer/conductor's early-'60s albums. With song titles like "Peking Tiger" and "A Night with Cleopatra," 1962's The Primitive and the Passionate is a pretty typical -- and entertaining -- mix of Baxter's instrumental exotica and standards. And, while the relatively straightforward renditions of "Laura," "Little Girl Blue," and "A Taste of Honey" might be a little too tasteful to pique the interest of modern exotica/lounge fans, their supreme smoothness is almost as much of an accomplishment as the album's more whimsical moments. These include the spooky, mariachi-lounge of "Fiesta Brava"; the Latin rhythms and smoky flutes on "Congalé"; and "Bird of Paradise," a sunny, string-driven track that builds on Baxter's quintessential hit, "Quiet Village." Les Baxter's Balladeers, on the other hand, goes in a completely different direction: instead of exploring and borrowing from the music of exotic cultures, on this 1963 album Baxter delves into the sounds of traditional American music in response to the era's folk music resurgence. With its simple production and the focus on the Balladeers themselves (including Phil Campos, Ernie Sheldon, and Jerry Yester in this incarnation), this album feels less like a Les Baxter album than a solid collection of early-'60s folk-pop. However, the versions of "Ashville Junction," "Sail Away Ladies," and Sheldon's originals "The Green Mountain Boys" and ...
| | These Are My Roots: Clifford Jordan Plays Leadbelly CD (1965)
Moon And Mind CD music
$9.95 Recorded on February 1 & 17, 1965 in New York, New York. Originally released on Atlantic (1444). Includes liner notes by Nat Hentoff.
All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology by Gene Paul (DB Plus, New York, New York).
At first glance, this appears to be a very illogical album. Back in 1965, tenor saxophonist Clifford Jordan recorded a tribute to the late folk singer Leadbelly. The date, originally cut for Atlantic and reissued by Koch in 1999, is actually more successful than one might expect. Jordan performs nine of Leadbelly's originals (including the hit "Goodnight Irene"), turning the music into jazz without lessening the impact of the melodies or their folk roots. Trumpeter Roy Burrowes, trombonist Julian Priester, bassist Richard Davis and drummer Albert "Tootie" Heath are on most of the selections along with Jordan, while Chuck Wayne (on guitar and banjo) helps out on four tunes, and pianist Cedar Walton is on three. The fine young singer Sandra Douglass is excellent ...
| | Ben Webster Blue Skies CD (2005)
Moon And Mind music CDs
$17.39 Ben Webster was never a particularly innovative or experimental tenor sax player, so he often gets overlooked when discussions turn to the greatest sax players of the 20th century, but he could do two things as well as anyone who ever picked up the instrument. He could blow rough and raspy and he could go sweet as fresh sugar on a ballad until one would swear the whole world was weeping. Webster didn't expand, deconstruct, and re-form melodies; he simply made them speak in a way that made the heart swell. This poorly annotated set has examples of both approaches recorded between 1934 and 1944, including the gently rolling "Blues on the Delta," a trademark romp on Duke Ellington's "Cotton Tail," and gorgeous melodic turns on Irving Berlin's "Blue Skies" and ...
