Marsala contemplates the group's achievements on "Five Against the World," and takes on macho posturing with "Jarhead," while "March of the Dead" focuses on societal apathy. Whatever Story of the Year's lyrical message may be, the music is always unapologetically fierce, highlighting the blistering and often intricate guitar lines of Ryan Phillips and Philip Sneed. While many of their peers mine a similar sound, Story of the Year is one of the finest acts in the hardcore-influenced heavy-rock vein, a fact reinforced by this potent album.
On its second full-length studio outing, IN THE WAKE OF DETERMINATION, the St. Louis-based quintet, Story of the Year, follows up on its hugely successful debut by further honing its razor-sharp metalcore. Although frontman Dan Marsala's gut-wrenching screams are an integral part of the band's sound, the more melodic aspect of his vocals are featured here as well; this approach works most effectively with the group's potent guitar riffs and propulsive rhythms, as best revealed on the surging "Take Me Back."
Story of the Year: Ryan Phillips, Phil Sneed (vocals, guitar); Adam Russell (vocals, bass guitar); Josh Wills (vocals, drums); Dan Marsala (vocals).

Not as good as Page Avenue, but still pretty good... I have to admit, I like Story Of The Year, and I don't like Green Day and I don't especially like Fall Out Boy. I'm into more heavier stuff like Killwitch Engage and Shadows Fall, or Slipknot, etc... But anyway, Story Of The Year is one of those bands that I've been able to appreciate because they are talented, on and off stage. Page Avenue was a landmark. It combined the elements of emo, metal, punk, and hard rock very well, and every song on that album is remembered for it signature trace, especially with songs so different in title in "And The Hero Will Drown" and "Until The Day I Die". This album stil retains their hard-rock signature, but it seems that they wanted to stick more to moderate rock rather than how they worked on their last album, and some songs are almost the same as other songs only without the same lyrics. However, this album still has the anthems of the band screaming that they say no matter what happens, they will not stand down or give up, just like how they did in "Our Time Is Now", and in Page Avenue's "In The Shadows". The only thing I didn't like is that it was all hard rock, no soft moments, except a little in "Take Me Back" but we needed another good song like "Sidewalks"...
All and all, a good-could've been-greater cd album from SOTY. Hope they make another album soon... Submitted by Jules (Coral Springs, FL, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Much Better... this album rocks so much more than page avenue, from track one through it fails to let up, really solid record, with we don't care anymore and "is this my fate?" he asked them being the anthems, awesome album. Submitted by Simon (Ledbury, UK) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

In The Wake Of Determination music CDs
$11.55 The Spanish label Acuarela issued a double compilation of previously unreleased songs, having asked international bands to write tracks that included the word or the idea of watercolor (which indeed is what Acuarela means) either in the lyrics or in the spirit of the compositions. Thus, the label ended up with a collection of 32 songs, ranging from excellent to average. In an overall listening, Acuerala Songs is a pretty successful LP. If the disc mainly features folk music (with artists such as Giant Sand's Howe Gelb, M. Ward, Tara Jane O'Neil, and the Mountain Goats), the journey does not remain in folk lands: Bands such as England's Dakota Suite invite listeners to the world of cool jazz-rock while others, such as Emak Bakia, trip on muffled electronic music and recall outfits like the Third Eye Foundation. This compilation is both a quiet and soothing thing, meant to be played for the background atmosphere it provides, while also serving to acquaint the listener with good bands that deserve to be discovered. ~ Romain Guillou
