(1 Customer Review)
For their set of Christmas related material, the Manhattan Transfer welcome such guests as trumpeter Jack Sheldon (on "Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!"), Tony Bennett ("The Christmas Song"), trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison and tenor saxophonist Pete Christlieb. With arrangements provided for the backing orchestra by Johnny Mandel on a few numbers, highlights of this disc include "Snowfall," a Santa medley and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." A pleasing set of jazz-influenced Christmas music. ~ Scott Yanow

One would suspect that the Manhattan Transfer had as much fun recording TONIN' as the listener will have savoring its many attributes. This album is an uninhibited tribute to the Transfer's pop influences and favorite recording artists, effectively achieved by recording the golden oldies with the original artists. The familiar falsetto of Frankie Valli permeates "Let's Hang On," while the smooth '60s pop-soul voice of Felix Cavaliere carries the Young Rascals' "Groovin'." But there are many surprises. In one of her best recorded efforts, the reclusive Laura Nyro reminds us of her own great past reworkings of oldies. And things really heat up with the dynamic vocals of R&B great Ruth Brown, B.B. King and Chaka Khan, who rips "Hot Fun In The Summertime" to awesome bits.
But two songs performed on their own show the true talent and the sophisticated harmonies of Manhattan Transfer. The ...
| | Is It...Man Or Astroman? CD (1993)
Christmas Album
$10.65 Escapist treats abound from this mysterious, tongue-in-cheek collective from the Southern United States. Man or Astro-man? have an ear for yesterday's sounds of tomorrow, as they decorate their mostly instrumental tracks with obscure sound bytes from out-of-date sci-fi movies and forgotten TV shows. Silly, dangerous, occasionally sloppy, but never boring, their album Is It Man...or Astro-Man? is the answer for everyone running low on laser gun/go-go/surf/spy/cowboy/drag racing/'60s/bullfighter/Mars-invasion/motorbike music. Songs like "Taxidermist Surf," "Invasion of the Dragonmen," and "Journey to the Stars" (originally by the Ventures) gallop along with the energy of a dozen wild stallions headed for Neptune. "Nitrous Burn Out" is a fantastic bit of racetrack romp, liberally mixed with roaring pistons and accident bulletins along the way. With anything so aggressively "up" in nature, there are a couple moments that inevitably droop a bit in exhaustion, ...

Christmas Album

In addition to turning in a stirring performance of "The Christmas Song" that would make Nat "King" Cole proud, Krall eases into a swaying version of "Winter Wonderland" and a lush rendition of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." With its dynamic arrangements and pitch-perfect mix of pop and jazz, this album stands alongside other timeless Yuletide outings.
