Although guitarist Larry Carlton is known primarily as a smooth-jazz performer, both solo and with Fourplay, his roots are in session work with pop/rock artists, most notably Steely Dan and Joni Mitchell. On 2006's FIREWIRE, Carlton gets back to his rock beginnings, offering up a set of tunes that focus on the energetic side of his playing. Aiding Carlton in this musical about-face is producer Csaba Petocz, who has been in the studio with acts such as Elvis Costello and Metallica, and here leads the six-stringer in a bold, assertive direction. Also joined by prolific drummer Matt Chamberlain and other top-tier musicians, Carlton leans into the shuffling "Inkblot 11," indulges in Jimi Hendrix-like riffing on "Naked Truth," and sinks into a deep blues groove with "Surrender." More in line with albums by Joe Satriani and Steve Vai than anything in the easy-listening vein, FIRE WIRE highlights the adventurous aspects of this expert guitarist.Down Beat (p.73) - "[He] uncorks riffs on self-penned instrumentals that generate drama ranging from serene awe to brash exhilaration."
JazzTimes (p.86) - "[E]ven when Carlton's guitar is dripping with nasty distortion...it still cuts through with emotional directness."

5 stars Larry Carlton returns to rock
Larry Carlton has lost none of his originality as he returns to his early rock roots on this album. He plays with sparkle and is ably supported by some excellent musicians. If you like melodic rock guitar, then you'll like this album.

4 stars Another Side Of Larry!
This is a motivator,a fun disk,a romp, jazz rock to put you in a go get'em mood.Even the slower tunes are played with urgency. The recording is clean ,with everyones part heard clearly. The smooth jazz man kicks it up to a funky level.

1 star horrible...just horrible
Dont expect very much from Carlton on this one- 'cause youre going to get even less than you expect. This wouldnt be considered 'good' guitar-playing by anyone- much less from someone with a reputation like LC. I think this hits a new low for him. What a disappointment.

5 stars What a Great CD!
This CD is outstanding! It falls somwhere between intrumental rock and fusion. The tunes are good, and all the playing is top notch. Larry shows he can play heavy and yet be more tasteful than most instrumental rock guitarists. A materful album form a guitar master. If you are really into the smooth side of smooth jazz, you probably will not like it. But if you like real music played by skilled musicians, buy it now!

5 stars This CD is actually very good
Plenty of solo artists have made a CD showing their ability to step outside of their normal genre. This is that CD for Larry Carlton. I've been a fan since album one and this CD is the funky rock side of Larry. He's done this before on a jazzier note, but this is definitely more rock than jazz. Any fan of good guitar (bass and/or drums) music will enjoy this CD. He's a great guitar player and this CD highlights his continuing ability to astound. Buy it.

Fire Wire
CD $6.75  4.4 stars Top 100 Audio Samples
A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune"). All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together ...

Larry Carlton may not have been issuing records in the United States with any regularity, but Sapphire Blue proves he hasn't been sitting on his hands, either. It's Carlton's first blues-oriented album in many years. Featuring a large band with a complete horn section, Reese Wynans on B-3, Matt Rollings on Rhodes piano, Terry McMillan on piano, and others, Carlton is in fine, even understated form here. This group plays like a band with a soloist at its center, not like a bunch of paid hacks backing up a guitar whiz. Witness the gorgeous horn charts by Jim Horn on "Friday Night Shuffle," ...

Fire Wire
CD $7.09  3.7 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Overtime is really two CDs in one. On the instrumentals, particularly "Bass City" and "Blue in Green," guitarist Lee Ritenour sounds a lot like Wes Montgomery and he leads his group (which features either Ernie Watts or Eric Marienthal on tenor) through some relatively straight-ahead numbers filled with soulful and creative playing. However the five vocals numbers are much more in the R&B/smooth vein and are largely throwaways despite the occasional presence of Ivan Lins. Clearly Ritenour was going for variety on this project but will probably only satisfy ...

Contains 203 tracks, 17 more than the original 7 LP and cassette releases. This eight-CD set should be a part of any collection that presumes to take American music -- not just rock & roll or rhythm & blues -- seriously. Atlantic Records was one of dozens of independent labels started up after the war by neophyte executives and producers, but it was different from most of the others in that the guys who ran it were honest and genuinely loved music. Coupled with a lot of luck and some good judgment, the results trace a good chunk of the history of American music and popular culture. Disc one ...
