(1 Customer Review)
The short and appealingly quirky debut by the Kingdom, Unitas claims to be a fictionalized biography of the legendary Baltimore Colts quarterback, but don't believe it for a second. The only through-line on this album is the way each short, punchy, indie rock tune is preceded by a distorted female voice with a possibly fake British accent, detailing the title of the upcoming song and its purported place in the album's mythology. The songs themselves are D.I.Y. indie pop of the first order, filled with layers of tape hiss, wheezing inexpensive keyboards, churning electric guitar lines, and a haphazard rhythm section just barely keeping the whole thing together. The male/female vocal blend of guitarist Charles Westmoreland's strangled yelp and keyboardist Jenna Roadman's helium-pitched, zero-affect harmonies is strictly out of the Indie Rock 101 playbook, but Westmoreland has written some compelling tunes here. The opening "I Am Constellation" is the highlight, but the four proper songs out of these eight tracks are uniformly strong. Perhaps the pretensions of the rest of the album will be exorcised on its follow-up. ~ Stewart Mason

| | U2 No Line On The Horizon CD (2009)
Unitas songs
$10.49 There's no shortage of legendary producers in line to work with music world titans U2; when work with Rick Rubin broke off, Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois stepped in. The resulting NO LINE ON THE HORIZON, 2009's offering from the Irish rockers, continues in the grand U2 tradition, as soaring pop anthems like opening single "Get on Your Boots" pair with experimental melanges like "Tripoli," on a striking album featuring touches of all the albums come before, yet hinting at new worlds for Bono to conquer.
After spending the 1990s experimenting with electronic music and returning to arena-ready rock during the first few years of the 21st century, U2 stakes out territory somewhere between those two points on 2009's NO LINE ON THE HORIZON. Enlisting its go-to production trio of Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois, and Steve Lillywhite, the Irish quartet seems intent on crafting a quirkier companion piece to HOW TO DISMANTLE AN ATOMIC BOMB, and they succeed with restless tracks such as "Get on Your Boots," which sounds like "Vertigo" hijacked by T. Rex, and ...

| | John Denver Rocky Mountain Christmas CD (1975)
Unitas CD music
$6.09 This 1998 reissue contains 5 bonus tracks (including the previously
unreleased "White Christmas") not included on the original release.
John Denver's music always had a warm, home-spun quality to it, so it isn't surprising that his 1975 holiday effort, Rocky Mountain Christmas, is a wonderfully low-key and friendly Christmas album. Divided between classic carols and new numbers, such as the fine "Aspenglow" and "Christmas for Cowboys," the album is an appealing, pretty record, perfect for late nights by the fireside. The 1998 CD reissue ...
| | Ronnie McCoury Heartbreak Town CD (2000)
Unitas music CDs
$14.79 An impressive debut by any standard, mandolinist Ronnie McCoury, on his first effort away from the Del McCoury Band, shows himself more than capable of stepping out of the shadow of his father. Though Del McCoury and brother Rob McCoury, as well as Mike Bub and Jason Carter, provide the musical backing on the majority of the tracks, this is a Ronnie McCoury-led project, as he shows an expert eye in song selection, as well as writing nine of the thirteen tracks. Displaying a rather strong Bill Monroe bend to his songwriting, on tracks like "Our Love Never Dies" and "Sometimes Sleep Closes These Eyes," many within the bluegrass genre are already seeing McCoury as one of the future pillars of the traditional form. Hot instrumentals, such as "Dawggone," on which Bela Fleck, Jerry Douglas and David ...

| | El Toro May And Marielle CD (2005)
Unitas album
$9.79 There are some albums that start off poorly but quickly pick themselves up. El Toro stalls with the minute-long acoustic ditty "Paper Dolls," which leads into the downbeat, electro-cum-ambient pop of "Georgia Peach" with a guitar playing off in the distance. It's sort of like a modern day Primitive Radio Gods, but when the rhythm section kicks in, everything blossoms. From there May and Marielle goes into a grand, epic chorus with ease à la My Morning Jacket but without the overt Southern flavor. The band uses both rock and electronic elements throughout, although it takes a while for some songs to get off the ground. This is true of "Bouncing Ball" as it slowly finds itself after a brief moment which brings the Cure's "Pictures of You" to mind. The chemistry between the bandmembers is excellent, as they go about carving out their own delicious indie ...
