First she's told she cannot be one of the dancers in the upcoming hip-hop half-time show starring hot teen rapper 15 Cents. And now, instead of celebrating her sweet 16th birthday with her friends, she has to go on a boring vacation to the tropical Legume Island with her family. Dang! But it turns out the island is full of mysteries. The evil Dr. Carver has lured them there in hopes of stealing Oscar's super-secret Instant Everlasting Multiplying Formula. With it, he hopes to take over the world. While Oscar, Trudy, grandma Suga Mama, and the twins fight to escape from the doctor's clutches, Penny embarks on Operation: Family Liberation, outwits some clones, stars in the half-time show, saves the world, and realizes she really does appreciate her unique and loving family. Proud Family Movie video
$9.45 This is an Enhanced/Hyper CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and, multimedia computer files, and provides a link to the artist's website with the help of a web browser.
On her long-awaited debut, Lil' Mo shows why stars like Jay-Z, Ja Rule, and Keith Sweat were so anxious to feature her on their own albums. The Big Apple rapper and singer is a protégé of Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliot, but where Elliot's game is cutting lines and cutting-edge hip-hop, Lil' Mo is a lil' more subtle, preferring to tap into her roots in old-fashioned gospel and R&B. That's not to say this album lacks the requisite up-tempo club thumpers -- "Gangsta" and "Superwoman, Pt. 2" certainly fill that bill. It's just that when things mellow out a bit, Mo really shines -- on sweet slow jams like "How Many Times," or on the stunning, bitter kiss-off, "Ta Da." Probably the best reference point for Lil' Mo's winning blend of street smarts and classic soul divaship is Mary J. Blige, and Based on a True Story suggests that Blige could have some serious competition in the years to come. ~ Dan LeRoy

| | Lil Mo Meet The Girl Next Door CD (2003)
Proud Family Movie film
$9.49 With a stretch-Hummer limo-load of talent, creativity, and confidence only hinted at on her debut, Lil' Mo throws down for real on MEET THE GIRL NEXT DOOR, her exceptional sophomore effort. First off, Mo is a genuine soul singer. Unlike some of her scale-running, scat-happy contemporaries, every note the diminutive vocalist utters sounds absolutely necessary. Of course it helps that the Lil' Miss is a heck of a songwriter too; the disc finds her organically mixing and matching elements of old-school R&B, new jack swing, and Philly soul as easily as other divas choose nail polish. Lyrically, she has few equals in the world of contemporary R&B, completely eschewing the played out bling-bling/bump 'n' grind themes of hip-hop in favor of highly intelligent ruminations on relationships, career, her child, and the role of strong, successful women in urban culture.
2003 album co-produced by Missy Elliott. 16 tracks. Elektra.

| | Raven-Symone This Is My Time CD (2004) Enhanced CD
Proud Family Movie DVD
$12.79 Raven Symone's time in the spotlight began at a ridiculously young age as the precocious three-year-old Olivia who repeatedly popped by the Huxtable household in the waning years of THE COSBY SHOW. Her recording career started similarly early, with the 1993 kiddie-rap record HERE'S TO NEW DREAMS. The talented actress/singer stayed in the public eye while growing up, and at age 18 she released her third record, THIS IS MY TIME. A long way from tracks like "First Day of School" and "Hip Hop Teddybear," Symone here offers up music that is sweet, melodic, and definitely mature R&B, in the vein of another singer who got her start as a kid on a popular TV show--Janet Jackson.
Symone opens smartly with the peppery, jacked-up dance single "Mystify," followed by the throwback soul of the scorned-woman declaration "Backflip." She displays her comfort around a ballad on the ...
