| | Last Train Home Time And Water CD (2003)
Goin' Home songs
$13.29 Eric Brace must really love his band, Last Train Home, having in 2002 left a cushy job as nightlife columnist at The Washington Post to go on the road full-time. Time and Water demonstrates his choice may not have been all that difficult. Good, and occasionally great songs, played expertly by an ever-expanding band (eight members including harp, horns, and pedal steel at last count) beg comparisons to the Mavericks and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band -- both bands tended to aim higher than what their membership was comfortable with. And as big as Last Train Home is, it only stands to reason that these varied players bring in many different genres as well. R&B influences the group on brother Alan Brace's "He's the Kind" and the Latin/mambo instrumental "Las Lagrimas del Pollo Rico" showcases Kevin Cordt's trumpet. If Brace isn't careful, however, even inspired melodies and homey lyrics won't save him if Last Train Home tries to be bigger than a decent country band should. Play what you know and play it well, then you can forget about the day job. ~ John Duffy
At the time this record was released, Last Train Home had just been named the Washington DC area's artist of the year by music folks who know. The large alt-country and pop band fronted by music journalist Eric Brace made its most melodic and absorbing album with "Time and ...
| | Mytwilightpilot 555 CD (2003)
Goin' Home album
$10.15 Mytwilightpilot's debut release marries glorious elements of lo-fi and space rock for an enchanting pop mix. String arrangements dance around hazy guitars and twitchy basslines on 555, showcasing the band's mesmerizing sound. The members of this Texas five-piece work with their respective instruments as a means of creating a piece of art -- modern art. They're not as cerebral as Radiohead and nor entirely complex like Mogwai, for Mytwilightpilot are stylish with their craft. Maddening guitar work from Matthew Jackson on "The Static Chair" complements frontman/vocalist Matthew Crow's somber vocals. David Hankins (piano), Major Miller (bass), and Jimmie Zarate (drums) are equally flattering in presentation, particularly on the band's brightest moment, "Main Theme to 'Smoking Gun'." This 13-minute soundscape of abstract musicianship is an album standout of orchestrated chaos and Mytwilightpilot is captured by its dark romance, as well. 555 is a solid effort from an eager band that's unafraid to experiment in style and sound. ~ MacKenzie Wilson
IN MUSIC WE TRUST says "From peaks and valleys, to the eye of the storm, the songs of MYTWILIGHTPILOT capture the imagination and keep you involved from the melodic implications through the soaring guitars and windstorm rhythm section crashing down on you. Their high-octane, fuel-burning gas engine kicks your ass time and time again as you find yourself in the eye of the storm."MYTWILIGHTPILOT BIOGRAPHY:In 1980, a film by the name of 'Urban Cowboy' took the nation by storm. The star, John Travolta, traded his white polyester suit for a black Stetson; disco for a mechanical bull; and found ...

| | Plumtree This Day Won't Last At All CD (2000)
Goin' Home songs
$16.45 Plumtree's final release, This Day Won't Last at All, marks the point at which everything began to come together -- their sweet harmonies and punk-pop sound had finally grown and developed into more complicated song structure, incorporating their choppier roots with calm and subtlety. Granted, the songs are still not complex by any means, but the simplicity of the playing is overshadowed by their stunning lyrics. Themes are fairly basic, mostly dealing with bitter relationships, but the all-girl quartet gives their songs a different sound and a different feel somehow. Perhaps it has something to do with Carla Gillis and ...
