RESCUE ME is the acclaimed 8 track release from guitar virtuoso Roy Buchanan.
Rescue Me (1975) was the final Roy Buchanan (guitar) studio album under his deal with Polydor Records. But, a loophole allowed the company control of his catalog outside of North America. Thus, a similar eight-song collection that bears the moniker In the Beginning (1974) is the U.S. equivalent. Buchanan's inimitable manipulation of the strings and equally definitive skills as an interpretive voice are without question the most cohesive factor on this otherwise limiting affair. In addition to the Tower of Power horns, Buchanan is joined by Neil Larsen (keyboards), Kenny Tibbetts (bass), Bill Stewart (drums), and at the suggestion of Ed Freeman, Billy Sheffield (vocals). The opening track "Rescue Me" -- a cover of the 1965 Fontella Bass hit -- fails to truly ignite behind Sheffield's less than inspired pseudo-soul. The groove becomes decidedly stronger however, as the entire band gets in sync for Al Green's "I'm a Ram." One of the best pieces is the interpretation of Joe Zawinul's "Country Preacher," which takes the Cannonball Adderley (sax) tune to a new and thoroughly satisfying level. The instrumental shines under the influence of Buchanan's alternately stinging and wounded fretwork. Nick Gravenites and Michael Bloomfield's "You're Killing My Love" retains the Muscle Shoals sound that Otis Rush used on the original. The platter concludes with Buchanan weaving an intimate and bluesy adaptation of "Wayfaring Stranger" titled "Wayfairing Pilgrim." ~ Lindsay Planer

Rescue Me album
$6.75 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of ...

Rescue Me CD music
$18.29 The U.K. based Beat Goes On label continues their series of Roy Buchanan two-fers. This one finds the artist at a distinct professional crossroads. After his ultimately discordant relationship with Polydor came to an end, the label finally showed the good sense to issue Live Stock (1975) -- which was primarily documented at Town Hall in New York City on November 27, 1974. The notable exception being the six-plus minute take of "I'm Evil" -- recorded the following March at the Amazing Grace club in Evanston, IN. Supporting Buchanan's consummate strings during the Town Hall appearance are Billy Price (vocals), ...

Rescue Me music CDs
$25.39 The sheer toughness -- and overall derivative -- nature of Killing Floor's debut album, issued six months after Led Zeppelin's debut in 1969 on the Spark label, is a wondrous contrast to the overly slick treatment American blues were given by British artists. All of these tunes, with the exception of one, are revamped versions of songs from the blues canon with different words. The lone "cover" in the set was written by Willie Dixon titled "Woman You Need Love," the tune Zep ripped for "Whole Lotta Love." Despite the fact that this set was issued before by Repertoire, the Akarma version is definitive in that it features the original cover ...
| | Danny Kirwan Second Chapter CD (1975) With Book; Limited Edition; Digipak
Rescue Me songs
$19.79 The first solo album from Fleetwood Mac singer/songwriter Daniel David Kirwan has the future producer for Human League and Buzzcocks, Martin Rushent, utilizing those skills here, as well as engineering. The sound is crystal clear, and a feather in the cap for Rushent as well as Kirwan. It starts off with an uncharacteristic "Ram Jam City," which has more Lindsey Buckingham sounds than one would expect, especially since the two guitarists come from two different musical worlds. "Odds and Ends" is more lighthearted, the kind of music Paul McCartney toyed with on The White Album's "Rocky Raccoon." What Second Chapter immediately sets forth is the importance of Kirwan as a pop artist, and how, despite Fleetwood Mac's success after he left, his sounds could ...

$25.69 In some circles, Mickey Jupp is something of a minor legend, a roots rocker with excellent taste and a cutting wit, best heard on the songs "Switchboard Susan" and "You'll Never Get Me Up in One of Those," both covered by Nick Lowe. Basher's endorsement is ...
