Link album
$9.99 The result, THE GREATER OF TWO EVILS, is a live-to-tape performance, equally raw and refined, with very few tweaks to the original arrangements. Inspiring versions of "Caught in a Mosh," "Madhouse," and "I Am the Law" attest to the enduring appeal of Anthrax's early material. Diehard fans will love the cleverly tagged main riff from "Time" (PERSISTENCE OF TIME), used at the end of "N.F.L.," and the hidden bonus track "Lone Justice" that follows "Gung-Ho." For these same lifer fans, TWO EVILS leaves one bittersweet pang; originally joining the fold at the same time as Belladonna, bassist Frank Bello exited Anthrax to tour with the reformed Helmet, making TWO EVILS his last album after nearly 20 years with the group.
If any group deserves to be renowned as "the people's metal band" it is surely Anthrax. With the exciting notion of re-recording a set of their 1980s-era material (when the lineup featured frontman Neil Turbin, followed by longtime singer Joey Belladonna), New York thrash-scene ...
| | Kreator Enemy Of God CD (2005)
Link CD music
$14.55 "Never underestimate the heart of a champion" may as well have been the unspoken moral behind Kreator's astounding return to form via 2001's Violent Revolution, following over a decade of "wilderness study" in non-thrash terrain. As well as revitalizing the band's career the album clearly helped main man Mille Petrozza make peace with his past, and set the stage for his band's wisely retro-minded direction going forward into the new millennium. Cue 2005's Enemy of God: not only Kreator's next shot at revitalizing old-school thrash metal for modern generations, but a necessary building block to sustaining their unexpected renaissance. And as the pummeling opening title track's timeless thrashing proceeds to detonate everything in sight, indeed all appears to be well and good in the Kreator camp's future. Of course, no matter how forceful and successful this initial assault, the inevitable irony of Kreator's decision to stay the course on Enemy of God is that it invariably doesn't sound quite as fresh as its direct predecessor. But in terms of those other, all-important attributes: intensity of attack and quality songwriting -- the results are almost identically inspired, more often than not. Simply witness the blinding solos and masterful twin harmonies that pepper instant neo-thrash classics "World ...

| | Rammstein Liebe Ist Fur Alle Da CDs (2009) Bonus Tracks; Deluxe Edition; Digipak
Link CD music
$17.59 Anyone familiar with the industrial-metal band's dark sense of irony should take one look at the title of Rammstein's 2009 album LIEBE IST FUR ALLE DA ("Love Is There For Everyone") and conclude that this one is a mean monster. Combining the tightness and punch of their 1998 album SEHNSUCHT with the musicianship and elaborate textures of their later work, LIEBE IST is a grand achievement, skillfully dividing its time between razor sharp metal rockers like "B********" or the opening theme song "Rammlied" and nostalgic, cabaret pieces that conjure the spirits of Weil and Brecht at a goth club. Best of the latter is the naked and haunting closer "Roter Sand" but little touches of a sinister yesteryear are everywhere, like the fake vaudeville music in "Haifisch" or the soundtrack strings of "Wiener Blut" which are eventually overcome by a guitar crunching juggernaut. This strange mix of styles is more effective here than it has been for about a decade, and there's no threat of the album becoming ponderous either as the economical tracklist and purposeful songs wipe away the sins of their previous album, 2005's ROSENROT. The group's loyal fans have remained with them through the '00s and have braved all the difficult but ultimately rewarding efforts that came with it. To them, LIEBE IST FUR ALLE DA is the big payoff and an instant classic. For the rest of the world, this is that once a decade, perfectly balanced Rammstein album that's immediately accessible but wide and deep enough to explore for years to come.

| | Carmen Consoli Due Parole CD (1996) (Import) Italy
Link songs
$25.09 The album that introduced her to the world, Carmen Consoli's 1996 debut, Due Parole, shows the singer just coming into her own as an artist. Her voice is as great and expressive as anything that comes on her later records, but the lyrical maturity that is seen on Stato di Necessità, L'Eccezione, or Eva Contro Eva hasn't quite been completely developed yet. Due Parole still has its share of great songs, though, including first single "Amore di Plastica" and the truly fantastic "Quello Che Sento" (two pieces that Consoli has included regularly in concert sets even after she had a greater selection of material from which to choose). "Fino a Quando" is a perfect closer, with minor chords, plaintive vocals, and long brooding electric guitar notes laid over everything, and "Lingua a Sonagli" shows a more aggressive side of the singer as she sneers out the chorus "Perché non parli cossichè potrò stanarti/Lingua a sonagli sputa in bocca ai tuoi fratelli," rolling her "R"s liberally in a way that just doesn't translate into English. Addressing the ideas of longing, confusion, and finding one's self (all common themes for singer/songwriters in their early twenties), the songs are simple yet pretty, and most of them manage to make their ...
