Best debut of the decade Yep, you heard me. I'm calling this the best debut album by ANY band for this decade. The band hit it pretty dead on the head in Guitar World when they described their sound as being like a whale. In their words, "Big, heavy and intelligent".
The whale imagery really came into focus on From Mars To Sirius and while that album is killer, this one shouldn't be missed out of everything the band has recorded. In addition to their whale imagery, their name, Gojira (the Japanese name for Godzilla), magnifies their sound tenfold. This is crushing death metal mixed with spacey ambiance which makes a euphoric combo. Joe Duplantier and Christian are great guitarists, choosing a huge chunky and tasteful guitar tone. You can hear them at their best in the song Deliverance, Blow Me Away You (Niverse) and Lizard Skin, combining bone smashing heaviness and nebulous ambiance. Give those two a listen and try to tell me you think "chugging" sucks. These guys prove that chugging on power chords can be very powerful and effective. Chugging is also more important to metal guitar playing than one thinks. Tony Iommi chugged his way through almost all Black Sabbath songs. It provided a good texture for the rhythm and the guitarists that followed him have done a good job as well. Outside of the monster chugs, both Joe and Christian deliver some sublime leads and creepy harmonic squeals that would make Zakk Wylde jealous. Joe's brother, Mario, also has the perfect drum tone. It is loud but bassy instead of ultra clangy like a huge number of metalcore bands go for these days. Joe can also roar and shriek like an inhuman beast but he also delivers mind blowing clear vocals. He does this best in the opening track Clone and I love how he ends one of the lines in Deliverance cleanly after growling it out at first. Pretty cool transition and it takes talent too. The band also explore their talent further by crafting together some instrumental interludes. These are a must listen because of the atmosphere they evoke.
Jean gets to strut a cool bass solo in 04 while Mario goes for tribal percussion on 5988 Trillions De Tonnes. It is good to combine both melody and brutality as it can keep the music stimulating and interesting. Not to say ill of other bands who just focus on brutality because they are good if you are in the mood for nothing but chaos. This is good if you are in the mood for beautiful ambiance or if you are in the mood for banging your head. With these guys, Nile's mixture of death metal and Egyptian music, and Cephalic Carnage's musical insanity leading the way for most of metal's new century, they guarantee metal will be in good hands. | | Isis Panopticon CD (2004)
Terra Incognita CD music
$13.05 If the glacial dynamics of previous metal and hardcore abstractions Celestial and Oceanic didn't prove that Isis was a heavy band in every sense, then Panopticon should do the trick. The title comes from 18th century philosopher Jeremy Bentham's prison design, which was later referenced by Michael Foucault in the 20th century. The idea is that a centrally placed guard or watcher can keep track of a large number of prisoners, and it excited Bentham and concerned Foucault. Heavy stuff for a metal band, huh? Both are quoted in the liner notes, bookended by aerial industrial photos laying out society's open sprawl. It fits perfectly with the epic music on the disc itself, which is as angular as post-rock forefathers Slint and as cosmically expansive as Neurosis, yet closer to the intensity of hardcore than either of them. Panopticon has the same cagey wall of noise as Oceanic, although the end product here is a little more polished. Aaron Turner is still howling and growling, but he's less reluctant to actually sing, just as the music is more inclined to stretch out into Pink Floyd's velvet atmospherics, which were a part of Oceanic, ...
| | Kreator Enemy Of God CD (2005)
Terra Incognita music CDs
$14.55 "Never underestimate the heart of a champion" may as well have been the unspoken moral behind Kreator's astounding return to form via 2001's Violent Revolution, following over a decade of "wilderness study" in non-thrash terrain. As well as revitalizing the band's career the album clearly helped main man Mille Petrozza make peace with his past, and set the stage for his band's wisely retro-minded direction going forward into the new millennium. Cue 2005's Enemy of God: not only Kreator's next shot at revitalizing old-school thrash metal for modern generations, but a necessary building block to sustaining their unexpected renaissance. And as the pummeling opening title track's timeless thrashing proceeds to detonate everything in sight, indeed all appears to be well and good in the Kreator camp's future. Of course, no matter how forceful and successful this initial assault, the inevitable irony of Kreator's decision to stay the course on Enemy of God is that it invariably doesn't sound quite as fresh as its direct predecessor. But in terms of those other, all-important attributes: intensity of attack and quality songwriting ...
