| | Richie Hart Greasy Street CD Richie Hart Discography of CDs
Guitarist Richie Hart and his group, which utilizes either keyboardist Pete Levin or organist Dr. Lonnie Smith in the core quartet, performs a variety of superior jazz compositions on this enjoyable and grooving set. The music is primarily straight-ahead, but the solos are generally unpredictable and consistently creative. Of the tunes, it is a pleasure to hear "Frim Fram Sauce" as an instrumental, Ron Carter's catchy "Third Plane" deserves to become a standard, and closing the set with a melodic version of "I'll See You in My Dreams" was an inspired idea. Every selection on this fine outing is worth hearing, with the concise solos uplifting the material. Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Steve Kuhn Promises Kept CD (2004)
Greasy Street
$15.55 The lineup on Promises Kept says it all: Steve Kuhn with strings. Kuhn is a jazz pianist whose recordings may have been out of the jazz mainstream for most of the five decades his career has spanned, but it hardly matters. Kuhn's style is signature, though his explorations have taken him to many different terrains in the world of jazz, from knotty post-bop to pointillism and modalism and through the nefarious world of 20th century vanguard composition to the place where listeners find him now: the place of a supreme and unabashed lyricism that is as sophisticated and forward-looking as it is historical and inclusive. Bassist David Finck is also present here; his trademark loping style has been a fixture on Kuhn's recordings since 1986. Conducted and orchestrated by Carlos Franzetti, this 15-piece string orchestra offers a lush yet poignant collaborative sphere for Kuhn to work his considerable harmonic magic. Kuhn composed all ten pieces. Some are well-known items in his oeuvre; others were written specifically for this recording. They vary in range, mood, texture, and depth of field. The album opens with "Lullaby," ...
| | Ted Nash La Espada De La Noche CD (2005)
Greasy Street
$9.69 Ted Nash's quintet has a slightly different instrumentation than the usual jazz group: the leader's got reeds, violin, tuba, accordion and drums! Nash switches between tenor, alto, clarinet, bass clarinet and alto flute while Clark Gayton triples on tuba, trombone and baritone horn. Joined by violinist Nathalie Bonin (who has a beautiful "legit" tone), Bill Schimmel on accordion and drummer Matt Wilson, the group performs unique renditions of Dizzy Gillespie's "A Night in Tunisia," "Tico Tico" ...

| | Dexy's Midnight Runners Too-Rye-Ay CDs (1982) England; Remastered; Deluxe Edition
Greasy Street
$18.09 Dexy's Midnight Runners include: Kevin Rowland (vocals); Billy Adams (guitar, banjo); Paul Speare (flute, whistle, saxophone); Micky Billingham (accordion, piano, organ); Brian Maurice (saxophone); Big Jim Patterson (trombone); Giorgio Kilkenny (bass); Seb Shelton (drums).
Additional personnel includes: Helen O'Hara, Steve Brennan (fiddle); The Sisters Of Scarlett (background vocals).
Thought of as one-hit wonders in the US for "Come on Eileen," Dexy's Midnight Runners were already stars in Europe (especially their homeland, Britain) before that 1982 single topped charts worldwide. Their influential 1980 debut, SEARCHING FOR THE YOUNG SOUL REBELS, was an uncommonly heartfelt blend of punk and soul sensibilities. However, disagreement over musical direction led to the departure of much of the band, leaving only vocalist Kevin Rowland and trombonist Big Jim Paterson. The duo carried on with new recruits, and the result ...
