| | Joel Penner Church Of The Little Black Dog CD Joel Penner Discography of CDs
Joel Penner is a veteran musician who evidently makes his recording debut as a leader with this 2005 release for Sea Breeze. The trumpeter and flügelhornist leads a tight-knit group through a set mixing standards, jazz, and compositions arranged by Rick Hils. Penner opens with a spirited interpretation of "You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To," while "Invitation" incorporates a funky backbeat with a touch of Latin percussion. Penner's mellow trumpet is featured to good effect in "Laura," while guitarist Doug MacDonald scored the lush setting of "My Funny Valentine," showcasing tenor saxophonist Michael Rose and the leader on flügelhorn. Unfortunately, Cengiz Yaltkaya's incongruous electric piano gives most of the session a rather dated feeling, something that could have been remedied by utilizing an acoustic instrument, while the slow to develop "Tombo in 7/4" doesn't fit in very well with the session as a whole. ~ Ken Dryden

Church Of The Little Black Dog music CDs
$9.55 FIDDLE & A SONG features Byron Berline performing with a variety of singers and with the bands California, Sundance, The Doo Wah Riders and The Sherman Oaks Presbyterian Church Quartet. Berline is a member of both California and Sundance.
Principally recorded at Rainbow Garage, Van Nuys, California; Champagne Studios, Nashville, Tennessee; Don Ross Studio, Eugene, Oregon between November 8, 1994 and February 6, 1995. "Fiddler's Dream" was recorded in 1983. Includes liner notes by Byron Berline.
FIDDLE & A SONG was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album. "Sally Goodin" was nominated for Best Country Instrumental Performance.
Byron Berline's Fiddle & a Song is a star-studded affair with numerous guests, for the most part recorded in 1995. It's hard to beat "Sally Goodin," a traditional bluegrass favorite, with veterans Bill Monroe and Earl Scruggs prominently featured. But there are other worthwhile tracks as well; ex-Sundance member Vince Gill sings lead and plays guitar on "Rose of Old Kentucky" and "Sweet Memory Waltz," while Mason Williams wrote "Skippin' Along on Top" in honor of Berline and sings lead in this humorous ditty as well. Berline is even joined by the Sherman Oaks Presbyterian Church Quartet (where Berline and his wife are longtime members, with Bette ...

| | Fred Forney Into The Mist CD (2000)
Church Of The Little Black Dog album
$9.29 For his first album as a leader, Fred Forney constructs a melange of sound and expression using a complimentary play list of standards and originals. While the liner notes are silent on this, "Into the Mist" recalls a similarly titled tune by Bix Beiderbecke ("In a Mist"). Like the Beiderbecke opus, Forney recalls the delicate passion heard in music composed by Gabriel Fauré. Ingenious improvision is the name of the game on "The Best Thing for You, Is Me" as Forney and Chuck Marohnic ...
