Chris Poland's "voice" is instantly recognizable. His guitar tone is thick, warm, yet edgy. He's sort of a cross between Bill Frisell and Joe Satriani, with the tone obsession of the former and the accessibility of the latter. His instrumental trio Ohm: features fretless bassist Robert Pagliari, who played fusion with him before Poland joined Megadeth in the '80s. As for drummers, Circus of Sound employs three, all quite capable. The standout, however, is Kofi Baker, son of Ginger Baker. This is appropriate, since Cream is one of Ohm:'s major inspirations. Baker is ferociously funky, and the record picks up noticeably with his work at its end. Ohm: play fusion in the purest sense: jazzy, with complex chords and copious swing. But the music is also rock, with compact songs and hummable melodies. The catchiest tracks, "Photograph" and "Steps from Home," evoke Satriani, the godfather of guitar instrumental pop. Satriani, though, never gave his bassists such equal billing. Pagliari is delightful, muttering and sliding all over the place. This high-energy quartet performs Blink 182-style pop-punk that owes more of a sonic debt to Green Day than to first-generation types like the Buzzcocks, which means the accent here is on pop. In 1986, U.K. music magazine New Musical Express released a cassette called C86, a 22-track overview of a new crop of guitar-centric indie bands whose brief, simple, at times amateurish songs were heavily influenced by echoes of 1970s punk and 1960s psychedelia. It was so influential that this entire subgenre of British indie rock (roughly, everything between the Smiths and the Stone Roses) is often dubbed C86. Twenty years after this seminal release, St. Etienne's Bob Stanley compiled the outstanding 48-track anthology CD86 as a tribute to the era. The compilation only contains a few songs from the tape itself, including Primal Scream's iconic jangle-pop rush, "Velocity Girl."
