This tight, professional set of some of Charles Mingus's lesser-known compositions contains creditable versions of the bassist and bandleader's adventurous tone poem, "The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady," the sophisticated big band swing of "Dizzy Moods," and the frenetic "Meditation on Integration." While the rough edginess of the Mingus band is perhaps impossible to duplicate, the Wynton Marsalis-headed New York City jazz institution's impeccable reproductions capture the essence of these compositions' bold, innovative spirit.
Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra: Ted Nash (flute, soprano saxophone); Victor Goines (clarinet, bass clarinet, tenor saxophone); Joe Temperley (bass clarinet, baritone saxophone); Wess "Warmdaddy" Anderson (alto saxophone); Walter Blanding (tenor saxophone); Lew Soloff, Marcus Printup, Ryan Kisor, Wynton Marsalis (trumpet); Andre Hayward (trombone, tuba); Ron Westray, Vincent Gardner (trombone); Eric Lewis (piano); Carlos Henríquez (bass instrument); Herlin Riley (drums).
Personnel: Delfeayo Marsalis, Patrick Smith .
JazzTimes (p.110) - "The characteristic driving riffs, engaging melodies, atmospheric moods, crashing dissonances, satirical humor, abrupt temp changes and straightahead swing are faithfully rendered." Don't Be Afraid: The Music Of Charles Mingus album
$10.05 Few arrangers have attempted to score John Coltrane's landmark suite A Love Supreme for good reason: it is very difficult to stand up to the emotional impact of the composer's original recording. But Wynton Marsalis ambitiously dove into scoring it for the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra for this Palmetto CD. The results are rather uneven. In spite of the best efforts of the participating musicians, the solos often prove to be a distraction, leaning more toward humor than sticking to Coltrane's message. The most ridiculous section occurs in the opening movement, "Acknowledgement," when the baton is passed from one player to the next as they take turns playing the brief cadence of the well-known A Love Supreme vamp, which quickly grows tedious. "Resolution" works somewhat better, though there are sections which sound as if more rehearsal time was needed. Drummer Herlin Riley makes a strong effort with the transitional solo into "Pursuance," but his work pales next to that of Elvin Jones on ...
| | Dave Holland Overtime CD (2005)
Don't Be Afraid: The Music Of Charles Mingus CD music
$13.49 This exceptional date by Dave Holland Big Band was recorded in 2002 in New York, yet remained unreleased until 2005. As is to be expected, Holland assembled a fine cast of seasoned and young players, some of whom are veterans of Holland's quintets and quartets. These are four saxophones -- two alto, tenor and baritone -- three trumpets and trombones, and vibes as well as bass and drums. They include Chris Potter and Robin and Duane Eubanks, Antonio Hart, Steve Nelson, Josh Roseman, Billy Kilson, Taylor Haskins, Gary Smulyan, Jonathan Arons and Alex Sipiagin. The music centers around the opening four-part "Monterey Suite," a tour de force commissioned by the Monterey Jazz Festival and originally performed there in 2001. Holland's writing for the trombone section is dynamite. Roseman, Arons, and Robin Eubanks offer up ...
| | Mingus Big Band I Am Three CD (2005)
Don't Be Afraid: The Music Of Charles Mingus music CDs
$13.89 As usual, the Mingus Big Band is in exuberant form throughout their performances on this CD, most notably on definitive versions of "Song with Orange" and "Orange Is Color of Her Dress," both of which were arranged by the late John Stubblefield. A bit different is that two songs apiece are played by Mingus Dynasty (a septet taken out of the big band) and the Mingus Orchestra. The latter, in addition to six bandmembers, adds French horn, bass clarinet, bassoon, and guitar. But although those two smaller ...
