Los Angeles-via-Seattle trio Giant Panda takes the Way-Back Machine to a distinctly golden era of hip-hop. MC Maanumental even says as much on the track "'90s," an era of production and rhyming styles that he, along with fellow MC/producers Newman and Chikaramanga (who mostly rhymes in his native Japanese), are intimately familiar with. Not a track goes by on FLY SCHOOL REUNION, their debut album, that doesn't have the spirits of Prince Paul's sample-heavy quirkiness or Large Professor's jazzy smoothness holding the beats down. The trio keeps the mood breezy, even when the subject matter gets serious ("Racist," "3rd Party"), as they reminisce about the days when jazz samples --not pop songs--colored the beats. Those with a soft spot for the old school will be pleased.
Giant Panda: Newman, Maanumental, Chikamaranga.

good ish this is real hip hop. they drop the gimmicks, build a hot beat, and flow fluidly over it on the whole album.
this album is real real, the artists bounce well off eachother and they bring humor, realness, and truth on every song. check out the flow on chikaramanga, never knew japanese rap could be so money. Submitted by matryx4545 (san francisco, ca, usa) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Fly School Reunion album
$9.09 Das EFX -- part of EPMD's Def Squad crew, which also included K-Solo and Redman, among others -- made such a wide breakthrough in 1992 with their debut album that their hit "They Want EFX" was even referenced in the lily-white teen serial Beverly Hills 90210. That Dead Serious could have that sort of broad impact and still retain its credibility within the underground hip-hop community says something about its appeal, which was considerable. But the album wasn't just appealing; it was also enormously influential, ushering in an entirely unique rhyming flow that influenced any number of rappers, established and novice alike. What exactly the duo is rapping about is anyone's guess. One thing is for sure: their lyrics are about as far removed from hardcore realism as they could possibly be, and although there are certain elements of boasting, it is so cut up and contorted that it never ...

| | Main Source Breaking Atoms CD (1991)
Fly School Reunion songs
$9.55 Main Source's debut album, Breaking Atoms, is one of the quintessential cult classics in hip-hop history. Underappreciated compared to peers like A Tribe Called Quest, Gang Starr, or even Brand Nubian, the album probably doesn't get wider acclaim because it was recorded for the ill-fated Wild Pitch label, and thus remained out of print for much of the time its reputation was spreading. Group focal point the Large Professor is a fine rapper, but the album's legend rests more on his production -- he debuts one of the most influential styles in hip-hop here, popularizing a number of now widely imitated techniques. Luckily, you don't have to know how to operate an SP-1200, or exactly what panning, chopping, and filtered basslines are, to appreciate the vibrant-sounding results. His intricately constructed tracks ...

Fly School Reunion album
$9.59 Even if Main Source's lineup had remained the same for the follow-up to Breaking Atoms, the group would've had trouble following it up. That's not all the group had working against it. Most significantly, in a very gutsy move, K-Cut and ...

Fly School Reunion album
$16.45 The CD: It was a struggle to figure out what to put on this, my debut CD. I know my Mom would love a CD of standards. Maybe next time Mom! After many sleepless nights, I decided to go back to my musical roots. Gospel music has always been a driving, positive force in my life. I also thought it was important to include positive and inspirational songs. Many people in the gay community have been wounded by the church. I hope that by listening to these songs, the wounds will begin to heal and the loneliness will begin to subside.Tom's "Goodnight Sweet Prince" (his love song to friends who have died from AIDS), was the number one single on the Outvoice Charts in ...
