Four years removed from the flash-in-the-pan success of "Second Round K.O.," Canibus seems to have finally come to terms with his has-been status on Mic Club: The Curriculum, where he emphasizes heady rhyming rather than his pointed dis tracks of the past. The first two hard-hitting tracks, "Poet Laureate" and "Master Thesis," illustrate this well. Canibus had always been a thoughtful rapper with a gift for bookish wordplay, even if he'd garnered much more attention for his battling skills as displayed previously on "Second Round K.O." (pointed at LL Cool J) and "Stan Lives!" (at Eminem). Other tracks here like "Cenoir Studies 02" and "Dr. C Ph.D" similarly boast an educated demeanor, and Canibus teams up with fellow street intellectual Kool G Rap on "Allied Meta Forces." Given the shortage of hardcore yet scholarly rappers out there, Canibus offers a refreshing alternative to his bestial hardcore peers as well as his boringly behaved scholarly ones and presents himself as a proud, true anomaly. ~ Jason Birchmeier

Not as good as 2000 BC but his best effort since it... This is an excellent album, but doesn't quite match up to 2000 BC. Best songs are "Allied Meta Forces", "Master Thesis", "Behind Enemy Rhymes" and "Liberal Arts". Worth buying. Submitted by CeeFizz (Greenthumb, Amsterdam) Was This Review Helpful? Canibus' Best Album Basically the 2 reviews before mine explain this album, but I disagree with this album not being better than 2000 B.C, this is Canibus' best work, plus he varies the tracks, unlike how 2000 B.C's album is full of battle raps from the first to the last track. If you are a true 'Bis fan, you'll love this album as the production has had very good work on, and the content is excellent! Mic Club: The Curriculum songs
$15.59 Building on the artistic success of their last CD, Rhythmix, Univers Zero returns almost entirely to their acoustic roots (no howling electric guitars here), and with a refined and tempered equivalent of the relentless, prolonged gloom of early releases such as 1313 and Heresie. Pieces are shorter and more varied, with some taking the form of almost jaunty medieval dances. The only electric instruments are Eric Plantain's electric bass, plus some discrete sampling and synth keyboards from drummer and leader Daniel Denis, who currently writes all the group's music. Michel Berckmans (oboe, English horn, bassoon) and Denis are the only remaining original members, although clarinetist Dirk Descheemaeker played on several of the later Univers Zero recordings in the mid-'80s. But even with a number of new bandmembers, the group's chamber music instrumentation (saxophones, cello, trumpet, marimba and violin), together with Denis' intricate writing and the very tight ensemble work, is enough to deliver the signature Univers Zero sound. Overt but short gothic/industrial elements, with titles such as "Suintement ...

$14.45 While the folks at Music Club do a relatively fine job in terms of their presentation and sound on their budget-priced compilations, they can sometimes be a bit boastful to the consumer who trusts record companies to simply offer what they say they do on the cover. This is a case in point here. First off, there isn't really a weak spot on either of these two discs; Gladys Knight can sing the street signs on the highway and it will still be drenched in soul, elegance, and emotional truth. Period. All of the music here is solid, beautifully performed. That said, there are so many things missing the truth needs to be told: these are Gladys Knight's finest moments after leaving Motown for Buddha in 1973. None of the Motown recordings are here. This set starts with 1973's Imagination album with the hit "Midnight Train to Georgia" -- meaning that the heavy-duty "Neither One of Us" from her final Motown recording of the same name is not here; neither is her stellar version of Marvin Gaye's "Heard It Through the Grapevine" or nearly a dozen other Motown singles. OK, that's taken care of, but let's get to what is here: the music included is ...
