On CHANGE, the socially conscious hip-hop act Self Scientific delivers another round of potent beats and rhymes, respectively provided by DJ Khali and Chace Infinite. With its thoughtful lyrics and dense, inventive production, the duo presents a welcome antidote to more mainstream "gangsta" rap (though a guest appearance by Houston MC Bun-B suggests that Self Scientific maintain their street ties) making CHANGE one of the most notable underground hip-hop releases of 2005.

| Change Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) S.S. is The Truth! Been a fan from day 1 and I knew they wouldn't dissapoint.
Once again it's all here, the beats(nuff variations for everyone), the flows and everything else in between.
Peeps been sleeping on these cats for too long and it's a damn shame.
People need to wake up from the mental death they're livin in and listen to the real/positive/inteligent ish.
Props to S.S. and all of Allah's children, bless!!!!!!!!! Submitted by kaan (London (The Dungeon)) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Understand me, Love Bird, this is what you need. I have been listening to Self Scientific since i was in Grad School at the University of Maryland on WMUC (the campus station). They used to play cuts from "The Self Science" during a show on Friday nights called From Dusk Til Dawn. I remember listening to "The Return", "Opus", and "The Long Run" and thinking that it was incredible, and eventually i picked up the CD (once I found out who it was). Since then I've been waiting for over five years for a new full length CD. Luckily, "The Works" and "Gods and Gangstas" gave me some food for thought in between, but I have been craving this one.
There is no arguing that this CD is up there with Common's "Be" and Little Brother's "The Minstrel Show" as one of the best hip-hop cd's this year and probably the last five years since...well, "The Self Science". Khalil's production is elevated and Chace's rhymes are pure poetry. This CD is an overture, a symphony, an opus. Every time I listen to it, and i've already listened to it through multiple times, I find something new. I thought they would be hard pressed to equal the Self Science and even songs like "One" and "Changes, Pt I", but they have done it. My expectations were high, but they've definitely been exceeded. And its not formulaic or redundant, this is something completely new, something changed. Obviously this CD is about growth and building, but hip-hop needs to stop and listen. These are real platinum artists, representing real issues in an incredibly lucid way and, as Chace puts it on "King Kong", "...I'm guessing what makes me a little bit different, I figure why rap and say nothing significant."
The songs that have, so far, made the most impact on me are "Change", "Weight of the World", and "Chace's Theme", but I can't even bring myself to skip through any of the songs...even "2 Step" which i've read the most criticism of on the internet. I find "2 Step" interesting in the context of how they introduce it with King Tek's request for a club anthem. Its kind of like the Percy Miracles track on "The Minstrel Show". Its almost sarcasm, but I can definitely say, i'd love to be at a club in LA and hear it come on. My guess is it will definitely work well with the ladies.
Basically, this CD is the Truth...period. Self Scientific is the best duo in Hip-hop since Gang Starr.

Change album
$11.18 Last time around, Shakira touched upon so many styles she couldn't be contained on one album, splitting Oral Fixation in two. This time, she focuses on one sound only: a pulsating electro-disco that crosses all boundaries and welcomes all nationalities. Such concentration behooves Shakira, freeing her to release her inner She Wolf, a wild wacko who's as coo coo as she is carnal. And for as sexy as Shakira is -- crucially, her music is sexy too -- what really gives She Wolf its bite is her inspired nuttiness, how she laments that Matt Damon's not meant for her, and wishes her ex-lover and his new girl a horrible vacation where the room smells and the toilet doesn't flush. "Darling, it is no joke, this is lycanthropy," she sings on the title track with no small trace of humor, and this blend of cheerful weirdness and sick beats -- often supplied by the Neptunes, delivering tough, sensual rhythms in a way they haven't in a long time, but also John Hill and Wyclef Jean -- is giddily addicting, a celebration of all the strange sensuality that comes out at night. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Luther Vandross This Is Christmas CD (1995)
Change CD music
$6.55 This stellar 1995 Christmas album is not your typical release of holiday standards. In fact, Luther helped pen most of the songs on this album. His originals include the excellent "With a Christmas Heart," "This Is Christmas," and "A Kiss for Christmas." But for those with an allegiance to the standards, "My Favorite Things" and "O' Come All Ye Faithful" are duly included among these 10 lovely tracks. Well-known bassist/arranger/producer Marcus Miller plays on some of the tracks, while well-coifed '80s rock balladeer Richard ...

Change songs
$7.59 Principally recorded at Record One Studios & Larrabee Studios, Los Angeles, California. Originally released on Epic/Sony (45400).
Digitally remastered by Bernie Grundman (Bernie Grundman Mastering, Los Angeles, California).
After a lengthy gap of nearly five years, Jackson had to pull something out of the bag. BAD was, after all, a difficult act to follow, and the press were trying to prove he was bonkers. This was a pretty decent attempt and fell in with the hard dance beat of the early 90s. "Heal The World" was much like the old melodic Jackson, and it became a major hit. "Black Or White" was the best of the rest, a well-constructed song in which he attempted to repeat "Ebony And Ivory" in the context of 90s dance music.
Despite the success of Bad, ...

Change album
$9.35 A rather eccentric compilation, this focuses mostly on MacColl's work for Stiff, adding a few tracks by other artists on which she guested. It includes some of her more notable singles, such as "A New England" and "They Don't Know," as well as B-sides like "Turn My Motor On," "Please Go to Sleep," and "Quietly Alone." Also on board are some selections that aren't exactly proper MacColl performances. She sang backup vocals on Billy Bragg's "Greeting to the New Brunette" from Bragg's Victim of Geography album and Ewan MacColl's "The Manchester Rambler" (from 1983); "Libertango," meanwhile, is taken from Irish accordionist ...
| | Tiesto In Search Of Sunrise 3: Panama CD (2002)
Change CD music
$14.15 This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by DJ Tiesto.
Part three of the In Search of Sunrise series is an enjoyable assortment of gently paced nightlife trance. Finishing the mix from Panama, DJ Tiësto is once again fond of the slow buildup approach, delaying the first danceable moment for a few songs in, and creates an inviting atmosphere of festival-friendly dance and restful tidal melodies. Highlights include World Clique's staggered, snaking "Don't Do It," Starecase's reminiscently '80s track "Faith," and the climatic old-fashioned trance troika of Way out West, Nalin & Kane, and Jericho. The welcome return of Solar Stone is sure to turn heads as well, but their reappearance ...
