| | Bryan Adams Anthology CD Bryan Adams Discography of CDs
(3 Customer Reviews)
While there have been previous Bryan Adams collections--1993's SO FAR SO GOOD and 2002's THE BEST OF ME--no compilation fully captured the breadth of the Canadian pop-rocker's career until 2005's two-disc, 36-track ANTHOLOGY. The set celebrates 25 years of Adams's catchy anthems and power ballads, dating back to 1980's jaunty, youthful "Remember." Adams, of course, hit a real stride with his mid-80s albums, and plenty of the tunes from those discs are here, including the hard-rocking "Cuts Like a Knife," the urgent "Run to You," and the charmingly nostalgic "Summer of '69." In addition to his later soundtrack hits, ANTHOLOGY also offers up the best moments from Adams's '90s/'00s output (some recorded live), easily making this the finest Adams retrospective on the market.

| | Phil Collins Hits CD (1998)
Anthology
$14.65 East, Leland Sklar, Cornelius Mims, John Giblin, Freddie Washington (bass); Sheila E.(percussion); Peter Gabriel, Sting, Marva King (background vocals).
In the early '80s, Collins took a break from the helm of Genesis to inaugurate a solo career that abandoned his group's art-rock agenda for a mainstream pop approach. In the ensuing years, the king of Nice Guy Pop established himself as one of the world's premier top 40 balladeers, as evidenced by the wall-to-wall hits that make up the balance of this appropriately titled collection. HITS walks the listener through the smooth, well-produced Collins hits that have worked their way into the collective consciousness of radio listeners (even casual ones) over the years. There are majestic power ballads ("I Wish It Would Rain") to light-hearted, infectious pop-funk ("Sussudio") and moody atmospheric pieces ("In the Air Tonight") HITS represents the full range of material this prolific performer has ...
| | Who Ultimate Collection CDs (2002) Remastered
Anthology
$14.89 Initial pressings of THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION included a limited edition bonus disc featuring four previously unreleased tracks.
Recorded between November 1964 and June 1982. Includes liner notes by Matt Kent and Andy Neill.
When it comes to a ground-breaking, iconic band like the Who, dubbing an anthology THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION is no small claim. The kicker here is that it happens to be the truth. Without venturing into the realm of the box set, there's never been such a definitive batch of Who tunes all under one roof before. Virtually all the bases are covered here, from such attitude-laden mid-'60s mod anthems as "My Generation" and "Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere" to the conceptual expansiveness of TOMMY-era ...
| | Sly & The Family Stone Essential Sly & The Family Stone CDs (2002) Limited Edition; Remastered
Anthology
$15.95 For all the multi-cultural hippie freedom Sly and the Family Stone stood for in their pre-RIOT glory days, frontman Sly Stone was smart and talented enough to know that it was through catchy pop singles that his band's message would gain its widest dissemination. All 11 of Sly and the Family Stone's Top 40 hits are here (some of which, like "Hot Fun in the Summertime" and "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)" were never on LPs back in the day), along with nearly every track from both of the band's career high point albums, 1969's STAND and 1971's THERE'S A RIOT GOIN' ON. Six cuts from 1973's FRESH represent that excellent, underrated album (and the sophisticated down-tempo ...
| | Very Best Of The Eagles CDs (1994) Remastered; Digipak
Anthology
$20.25 THE VERY BEST OF includes a 46-page booklet with pictures and track information.
"Hole In The World" was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.
This 1994 greatest hits package (released in anticipation of the band's wildly successful reunion tour and album) supplants THEIR GREATEST HITS 1971-1975. It adds seven songs, but unfortunately deletes "Already Gone," one of their best rockers.
What's most interesting about THE VERY BEST OF THE EAGLES - apart from the presence of obviously classic songs like "Take It Easy" and "Hotel California" - is that it demonstrates that the band's esthetic was fully formed from day one. Despite the fact that the songs here span nearly a decade, listening to them back to back you could almost believe they were the product of one marathon recording session.
The Eagles' founders Don Henley and Glenn Frey were forthright in their desire to bring then-emerging country rock to new heights of commercial success. Formed in Los Angeles in 1971, they learned from their observations of the scene around them, and subsequently took their music to the top of the charts. They stayed there throughout the '70s, becoming synonymous with the sound of Southern California rock.
The band's first hit was ...
| | Guns N' Roses Greatest Hits CD (2004) Remastered; Digipak
Anthology
$10.39 Hard-rock juggernauts Guns 'N' Roses arrived as rock & roll saviors in a dark time of generic hair metal and bloated pop. With only five studio albums to draw from (one being the all-covers SPAGHETTI INCIDENT), nearly a third of the material on GREATEST HITS is unsurprisingly devoted to other people's songs. Inclusions range from a dramatic version of Bob Dylan's "Knockin' On Heavens Door" and an outsized take on Paul McCartney's "Live and Let Die" to punk classic "Ain't It Fun" and doo-wop nugget "Since I Don't Have You."
The band's original songs, however, are the heart of G'N'R's appeal. Start with the quintessential heavy-rock anthem "Welcome to the Jungle." Amid the thunderous time-keeping and tasty riffing are slinky grooves, sexy swagger, and quite an aura of danger. The ...
| | Splish Splash: Best Of Bobby Darin, Vol. 1 CD (1991)
Anthology
$7.59 Recorded between 1958 & 1971. Includes liner notes by Ken Emerson.
Considering that this is only the first of two volumes devoted to Bobby Darin's Atlantic hits -- between them representing 42 songs, a significant chunk of his released output for the label -- the range on this CD is amazing. Of course, one is aware of the sheer number -- as a number -- of hits that Darin had in a career that lasted scarcely 15 years. But this collection, produced by Gregg Geller as part of the "Atlantic Masters" line (the point where Atlantic's vintage stuff started to sound really good on CD), is almost dizzying in its breadth of material, when it get spread out, all in one place. Rock 'n' roll ("Queen Of The ...
