The self-titled Voltio followed the reggaeton artist's White Lion debut album by roughly a year's time, and features mostly new material alongside some of the better songs from Voltage/AC. It's not a very marked step forward artistically, it should be noted, but it is a noteworthy step forward commercially. Reggaeton had a good year in 2005, and the music's profile rose steadily over the year, to the point where it was getting lots of media coverage. So when Voltio dropped at the end of the year, it got plenty of notice -- and rightfully so, because Voltio is one of the style's better artists, sharing much in common with his iconic labelmate, Tego Calderón. The two are both thoughtful, serious-minded performers with styles that are rough and much more in line with hardcore rap than dancehall, Latin dance, or pop. Even so, two of the best songs on Voltio are oriented toward the dancefloor, "Chulin Culin Chunfly" and the previously released "Bumper." Another of the previously released standout songs, "Julito Maraña," is less so. Though driven by a nice, salsa-tinged piano riff, the song is oriented toward careful listening, boasting a cinematic street tale accentuated by a guest feature for Calderón. A long-form video had been filmed for the song upon its initial release, one of the first of reggaeton's earnest forays into the realm of video. Relative to the best of the reggaeton albums released widely in 2005 (Pa'l Mundo, Mas Flow, Vol. 2, Reggaeton Latino, Barrio Fino en Directo, Motivando a la Yal, et al.), Voltio is solid and impressive, albeit relatively one-dimensional, with few guest features and not an especially wide range of production styles. It's a first-class reggaeton album, nonetheless, and a promising stride forward for Voltio, who seems destined for prosperity. ~ Jason Birchmeier
Personnel: Voltio (vocals); Maestro, Notch, Tego Calderón, Zion, Residente Calle 13 (vocals); Three 6 Mafia (rap vocals).

Voltio album
$11.65 Duo Wisin & Yandel cover all the expected reggaeton bases on PA'L MUNDO, dropping churning, head-bobbing beats, slinky, Latin-inflected hooks, and rapid-fire raps en Espanol. But it's Wisin & Yandel's willingness to deliver on expectations that makes their music satisfying: these tunes can rock the party with booming beats and, likewise, remain plenty catchy with their chanted, sing-along choruses. PA'L MUNDO is a multi-purpose reggaeton release, good for the club, the jeep, or the house party.
| | Alexis & Fido Pitbulls CD (2005)
Voltio CD music
$8.49 Alexis & Fido (their real names are Raul Ortiz and Joel Martinez, respectively) are a reggaeton duo from Puerto Rico. PITBULLS (a name by which the duo is sometimes referred due to Alexis's penchant for barking) is Alexis & Fido's full-length debut. Making good on the promise of their single "El Tiburon" featured on the reggaeton sampler MAS FLOW, 2, PITBULLS is full of witty wordplay, suggestive lyrics, and cumbia, mariachi, and dancehall flavors, all of it underpinned by Fido's original beats. Already stars in their native ...
| | Calle 13 CD (2005)
Voltio music CDs
$9.05 The colorful cover of Calle 13's debut album, which features a pierced female tongue preparing to lick a triple-scoop ice cream cone with sprinkles, is an apt metaphor for the music inside. The album is as refreshing, pleasurable, and vibrant as summer; yet there's something sweet and dangerous about it too. Calle 13 mines the reggaeton craze of the 2000s to excellent effect, but they outdistance their contemporaries in terms of creativity, wit, and musical ingenuity. These qualities are attributable largely to MC El Residente's playful lyrics, and producer Visitante's buoyant beats (which make ample use of the rhythms from the duo's native Puerto Rico). All told, Calle 13 is a breath of fresh air in the overpopulated ...
| | R K M & Ken-Y Masterpiece: Nuestra Obra Maestra CD (2006)
Voltio songs
$12.35 Although the title, MASTERPIECE, may be a bit of an overstatement, this full-length by duo Rakim (not to be confused with the legendary hip-hop MC) y Ken-y is packed with hopped-up reggaeton that aims to please fans of the genre. The duo has been featured on numerous reggaeton compilations, including EL DRAFT 2005, and they also gained attention (and favor with female fans) with their sexy video for "Tu No Estas." MASTERPIECE shows the pair fully capable of stretching their infectious beats, rapid-fire rhymes, and catchy pop refrains over a larger canvas.
The audio portion of this CD/DVD set finds the reggaeton duo Rakim & Ken-Y revisiting tracks from its 2006 album, MASTERPIECE. Highlights of the beat-driven collection include a reworking of the hit "Down" that finds the Puerto Rican pair collaborating with Hector "El Father" and a version of "Iqual Que Ayer" that features ...
| | Tito "El Bambino" Top Of The Line CD (2006)
Voltio album
$9.89 Up-and-coming artist Tito "El Bambino" joins the ranks of his high-profile reggaeton brethren with the release of 2006's TOP OF THE LINE. Sporting the usual array of stuttering, bouncing beats, rapid-fire rhymes, and hands-in-the-air chant-along choruses, TOP OF THE LINE sounds tailor-made for the jeep systems and block party boom boxes of summer '06. And that El Bambino isn't afraid to croon a seductive, downtempo number, as he does on "Secreto," won't hurt his popularity with female fans (to say nothing of his movie-star good looks).
Formerly half of the groundbreaking reggaeton duo Hector & Tito, Tito "El Bambino" dropped his solo debut TOP OF THE LINE in 2006. The album was a hit, and the two-disc set TOP OF THE LINE/EL INTERNACIONAL capitalizes on its popularity, offering plenty more for fans to enjoy. The first disc contains new singles, remixes, and tracks from TOP OF THE LINE, including "Mi Chica Rebelde" and "Peligro." The second disc is a DVD containing videos and ...
| | Don Omar King Of Kings CD (2006)
Voltio CD music
$10.99 Released in mid 2006, KING OF KINGS finds Don Omar challenging fellow Puerto Rican superstar Daddy Yankee for the reggaeton throne. While the opening track, "Intro: Predica," presents Omar energetically rapping en Espanol over the string lines of the self-appointed "hip-hop violinist," Miri Ben-Ari, "Belly Danza" (featuring Beenie Man) works a lively dancehall vibe. Of course, Omar is sure not to leave more traditional Latin sounds behind, as evidenced ...

| | Audio Learning Center Cope Park CD (2004)
Voltio album
$12.95 Formed in 1998 from Portland, OR-based outfits like Pond and Sprinkler, the lads in Audio Learning Center are easily the square pegs of Vagrant Records. It's refreshing that they don't fit in with their emo-addled labelmates, as the Chris Brady-fronted trio blends elements of grunge stalwarts like Nirvana and Screaming Trees with 1980s college rock favorites like Big Dipper and Volcano Suns on Cope Park. Booze-doused road tales like "The Neverwills" seem to roar with reckless abandon, but drummer Paul Johnson and guitarist Steven Birch work off of Brady with tremendous precision on the title cut -- which flirts with modern prog. But ALC is clearly at its best setting off urgent, raw rock & roll firecrackers like "Passenger" and "In the Red." Desperate, unstable, and lovelorn, Brady's songs are always real, and -- with the exception of the aimless "California" -- really very good. ~ John D. Luerssen

| | Buddha Sounds V.1 CD (2005)
Voltio music CDs
$9.65 Combining electronic and Hindu musical influences, BUDDHA SOUNDS is a compilation of 14 mixes by DJ Seoan.
When PMB together with producer Seoan came up with the magical concept of "Buddha Sounds", they did not imagine that their creation would be one of the greatest releases of their company (artistically and commercially alike). It is the incomparable combination of chill out electronic textures and the addition of exotic Hindu tones that have made the album a remarkable step forward for electronic music this century. Besides Seoan's matchless subtlety (that has marked a high in his career and for which he has gained respect all over Europe), Ekaterina Lartchenko's enchanting violin also stands out. She performs performs the vocals as well on the unforgettable "Mope Okerh" in her native Russian. "Buddha Sounds" marks the beginning of an adventure that takes you ...

| | Eric Lindell Change In The Weather CD (2006)
Voltio album
$14.35 Although he was not born in Louisiana, Eric Lindell follows Marc Broussard's career path as a young and soulful guitar-slinging upstart with his heart in the R&B of the '60s and his soul in New Orleans. This pastiche of an album released in 2006 collects and remasters the audio for music that has been previously available on tiny, poorly distributed local imprints. Despite its stitched-together origins, the disc holds together remarkably well as a cohesive statement, primarily due to Lindell's low-key yet impressive talents as singer, songwriter, and bandleader. Latin influences such as the percussion (courtesy of War's Harold Brown) and trumpet on "Sunny Daze," along with a reggae lilt on "It Won't Be Long," "Casanova," and "Two Bit Town," bring Caribbean sunshine to the sound. The opening "Give It Time" recalls Traffic in its "Dear Mr. Fantasy" chords, but the tune -- like many on his Alligator Records debut -- snakes around a soulful, gospel-styled, slow-burning vibe that is best described as rootsy. Lindell is loose and seems like he's having a ball throughout. That enthusiasm bleeds into the album's upbeat approach, especially on such frisky, party-ready tunes as "Feel Like I Do." He brings the horns and female backing vocals for an Otis Redding-inspired "All Alone," one of the many examples where Lindell's relaxed yet convincing vocals carry the song. Like much R&B, there aren't many guitar solos and only the sax takes the lead on most instrumental breaks. But the album connects with hummable songs less concerned with individual talents than with the musicians' contribution to the overall groove. As laid-back and casually inviting as a crisp spring day, Lindell kicks off his career for this blues imprint with an impressive and frothy release that shows he's just starting to reveal the full extent of his talent. ~ Hal Horowitz

$31.55 " ASTRONOMY CLASS is the soaring new trio made up of Ozi Batla, Sir Robbo and Chasm. Their debut album, Exit Strategy, is a hook-laden hip hop record anchored in resinous dub and reggae. Crafted with a yearning for the classic raw soulfulness of old funk and reggae 45s, but with feet firmly grounded in 2006, this is a unique Australian hip hop album that casts its eye galaxy-wide for guidance - this is blend a of new and old that has its own character. Ozi Batla, frontman for The Herd, delivers some of his strongest lyrics to date, progressing forward with some beautifully sung harmonies, while gliding through a spectrum of topics, be they political, humorous or personal, he reveals yet more maturity and a depth " of talent.
