Tom Cruise stars in this Steven Spielberg film. One cannot help but think of terrorist attacks while watching Stephen Spielberg's update of the classic sci-fi fantasy THE WAR OF THE WORLDS. While the H.G. Wells story dates back to 1898, and has inspired previous adaptations, this particular version feeds off its 21st century audience's fear of a terrorist-induced apocalypse. Even if the sight of tall buildings crumbling to the ground and crowds running fearfully away from their demise doesn't trigger post-9/11 paranoia, dialogue such as "Is it the terrorists?" will.
Disgruntled, divorced father Ray Ferrier (Tom Cruise) is struggling to connect with his estranged kids, who have been dropped off by their mother for the weekend, when a severe and unusual lightning storm leaves his New Jersey neighborhood powerless. Over the course of the next few hours, it becomes obvious that this was not a storm at all, but rather the first sign of a worldwide alien attack. Emerging from the ground in multi-legged tripod-like machines that have apparently been stored beneath the earth's surface since before man's time, these aliens begin the process of waging a long-planned war on our planet. While WAR OF THE WORLDS follows Ray's growing closeness with his two children (Dakota Fanning and Justin Chatwin) in the face of imminent disaster, and his transformation from lousy father to hero, their story is used mostly as a vehicle for illustrating an unending series of horrific scenarios. The human element of the story is also briefly explored with Tim Robbins's portrayal of a crazed, alien-fighting recluse. Sticking closely to Wells's original descriptions of alien warfare, the film focuses mainly on visuals and succeeds through impressive special effects to create two hours of thrilling, frightening, realistic terror. Theatrical Release: June 29, 2005 War Of The Worlds Reviews: "Steven Spielberg's summer blockbuster has knockout special effects, masterful cinematography, and terrifying and suspenseful sequences. Its explosive, non-stop action brings to mind SAVING PRIVATE RYAN's indelible opening battle sequence."
-- Claudia Puig, USA Today 3.5 stars out of 4 -- "Janusz Kaminski's icy-blue cinematography and John Williams's unusually discordant score underline the movie's sober reckoning of Armageddon..."
-- Howard Karren, Premiere Ranked #2 in Rolling Stone's "Top 25 DVDs Of 2005' -- "Spielberg's technical mastery, especially with the Tripods -- aliens as nasty as E.T. was sweet -- is evident in every frame of this superior transfer."
-- Peter Travers, Rolling Stone "Watching Steven Spielberg's spooky and playful remake of WAR OF THE WORLDS, you may feel a surge of childlike awe..."
-- Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly "Effectively scary and visually impressive."
-- A. O. Scott, New York Times "[The] road trip, by car and foot, inspires Spielberg to create extraordinary images of a frayed family in a frayed civilization."
-- Peter Travers, Rolling Stone "Spielberg handles the action with practiced flair. There are even some uncharacteristically dark touches..."
-- Edward Lawrenson, Uncut "The film delivers on spectacle, from the jarring initial appearance of an alien tripod breaking up through tarmac to the collapse of the war machines in post-holocaust Boston."

Highly Overrated This is the worst movie that Steven Spielberg has ever made. I was very disappointed by the plot and script. They were very poor, and so was the acting. I was not really impressed also with the opening and closing of the film because they were quite weak. Submitted by admar (Gallup, NM, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A very very bad movie !!!! It's my opinion . This movie is worst . good special effect but no more a bad remake . The original of 1953 is very better Submitted by Yves , Canada (Québec , Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Inane plot...but still enjoyable It's rare to find a movie where so many key elements of the premise make no sense whatsoever. For example:
The aliens supposedly bury the war machines before human civilization exists in preparation for a future assault. Rather than colonize the planet at that time, they wait for humans to develop technology and weaponry, THEN they decide to invade. Maybe they felt it was more sporting that way.
The aliens are eventually destroyed by the Earth's microorganisms, against which they have no immunity. Weren't these microorganisms present when they buried the war machines in the first place? For an advanced civilization they seem to have skipped microbiology in school.
Also, they bury dozens (maybe hundreds) of these huge metallic machines all over the planet and not a single one is ever detected or unearthed inadvertently??? Uh huh.
You get the idea.

War Of The Worlds DVD
$9.49 ROCKY BALBOA, the sixth installment of the long-running film franchise, should amount to nothing more than a lame punch line to a TONIGHT SHOW monologue joke. However, just as his longtime corner man Paulie describes the Italian Stallion himself, this movie is all heart. Thirty years after Sylvester Stallone first introduced the underdog backroom brawler from Philadelphia in the Oscar-winning ROCKY, Rocky Balboa returns for one last dance. Speculation as to whether Balboa, in his prime, would have been able to defeat lackluster champ Mason "The Line" Dixon spurs Dixon's management to set up an exhibition fight between the two. That Balboa is in his 50s in the film and wouldn't be sanctioned to fight anyone, let alone a man 30 years his junior and in the prime of life, must be left up to the viewer's ability to suspend disbelief. To its credit, however, the movie addresses at every turn the insanity of a man approaching 60 getting back into a boxing ring, and Balboa's impassioned explanation of his motivations is just believable enough to give all other improbabilities a free pass.
Though it may sound like faint praise, this is the best ROCKY movie since the original. It's very much a love letter to Philadelphia, and Stallone, who wrote and directed the movie, shoots everything with an unflinching eye that humanizes the mean streets ...
