Cantora is Mercedes Sosa's first album for Sony, and it is clear the company pulled out all the stops in the conception and promotion of this ambitious project, a two-part album featuring 35 duets with a list of guests that reads like a who's-who of contemporary Latin American music. A world music diva of the stature of Edith Piaf, Mina, or Amália Rodrigues, Mercedes Sosa has always been revered by her colleagues, and considered a mandatory source of musical -- if not often ideological, as well -- inspiration for all Latin American singers. Thus, it is hardly surprising that Cantora, Vol. 1, released in March 2009, can boast of a lineup of artists such as Caetano Veloso, Joan Manuel Serrat, Jorge Drexler, Luis Alberto Spinetta, Shakira, Julieta Venegas, Gustavo Santaolalla, Nacha Roldán, and León Gieco, among many others. As with all projects of this kind, however, not every collaboration works on the same level. In this respect, highlights are probably up to the listener, according to how much he/she rates the guest in turn -- it is hard to imagine longtime Sosa admirers caring much for her duets with young Latin pop stars, but fans of the latter may find their numbers a real treat. Ten long years after the release of Gene Ammons' Greatest Hits, Vol. 1: The Sixties, the de facto second volume finally emerged in 1998, summing up the 1950s on a single disc of short-play singles and long, glorious blowing sessions. The three singles, all succinct little summaries of progressive bop, cover the years 1950 and 1955, and then the real meat and potatoes kick in: five extended tracks (including the definitive jam of this period, "The Happy Blues") with plenty of ecstatic blowing room for Jackie McLean's alto, Art Farmer and Donald Byrd's trumpets, and Mal Waldron's piano. Throughout, Ammons' massive, booming tone hovers over the disc like a majestic yet benign presence, always funky, always in charge. Unlike the first volume, Greatest Hits: The 50s is sequenced in chronological order, which makes more programmatic sense, and almost all of Ammons' Prestige LPs from the '50s are touched upon. Goldfinger is basically a ska-punk band, but it's not afraid to just be a punk band, either; in fact, it can sound disarmingly like both Husker Du (squalls of Bob Mould-ish feedback) and Green Day (engagingly melodic). It's not afraid of heavy metal either, as witness the ferocious riffing on "Bro," or lead singer/writer John Feldman's declaration in "The End of the Day" (a rant against an obnoxious speedfreak scenester) that "if I want to play metal that's all right with me."
Feldman's lyrical persona throughout the album is that of somebody continually ticked off by the people around him. Incidentally, that small sub-species of humanity who clamored for a revival of the music of '80s New Wavers Nena will be pleased to learn that there is a respectful, if oddly Zepplin-esque remake here of that band's international hit "99 Red Ballons," including a verse or two auf Deutsch.
