Eat The Phikis album
$11.99 The music of Dead Can Dance has long been a favorite of the "Goth" crowd; however, AION is really the first one of the band's records that can actually be called Gothic in the classic, renaissance sense. Arguably Dead Can Dance's most successful record, it contains the band's most consistent set of songs since SPLEEN AND IDEAL. Widening their view to encompass more of the ancient world than with earlier records, Dead Can Dance explore styles from Northern Europe ("The Song of the Sibyl") to the Middle East ("Radharc"), with stops along the way at a number of other ...

$13.29 While the name Israel Kamakawiwo'ole falls trippingly off few tongues, the Hawaiian singer better known as "Iz" was one of the biggest stars in his home state. Iz first came to public attention as a member of the popular Hawaiian group known as the Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau. His subsequent solo career brought even greater fame, and countless fans were saddened at his untimely death in 1997. Those who mourn his passing will be gladdened by the posthumous release of ALONE IN IZ WORLD, compiled from various recording session outtakes.
While one might expect a big, deep sound to emanate from a gargantuan-sized body like ...

| | Bob Marley Catch A Fire: Deluxe Edition CDs (1973) Remastered; Deluxe Edition
Eat The Phikis album
$19.59 It is nearly impossible to imagine a time when reggae was not part of the cultural currency. Though Bob Marley and the Wailers cannot be said to have invented the style, they certainly brought it to the world stage, and this album was the torch that lit the way. CATCH A FIRE hit with the force of a revelation when it was released in 1973, and though Chris Blackwell tailored its sound with a rock audience in mind, the album was still unlike anything that had ever come down the pike. Ironically, even given its relatively full production and electric guitar solos, CATCH A FIRE sounds more organic and rootsy than any of the Wailers' subsequent releases.
While the percolating rhythms and burbling bass lines of the Barrett brothers, and ...

| | Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & T Together CD (1969) Bonus Tracks
Eat The Phikis album
$19.95 The least impressive of the ubiquitous quintet's original albums, Together was largely marred by the same problems that afflicted Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mich & Tich's most recent singles -- the awareness that they'd taken their original flamboyance as far as it could go, and uncertainty as to how to proceed. Certainly "Snake in the Grass" was little more than a throwaway when compared to the band's past glories, while the ambitions that would ultimately sunder the group were also beginning to bubble through. Dave Dee himself produced six of the songs on the album, and his inexperience shows in the lifelessness that afflicts such lightweight efforts as "First Time Loving," "Mountains of the Moon," and a trio of double-entendre-ridden numbers ("Below the Belt," "Love Is a Drum," and "P Teaser") that are little more than execrable exercises in smutty juvenilia. It's not all bad, of course. "Margareta Lidman," an ode to one of Beaky's ex-girlfriends, has a proto-prog drive all its own, together with a truly ear-opening Dozy solo, while "Don Juan" was an ultra-atmospheric romp through the backstreets and alleyways of Pamplona. Unfortunately, those same two songs were coupled on the band's latest single -- so, once you'd picked up that, what did you need the album for? ~ Dave Thompson
