Director Akira Kurosawa reimagines Shakespeare's tragic King Lear as a singular historical epic set in 16th century Japan. Tatsuy Nakada stars. Extras include interview with Sidney Lumet, short film by Chris Marker, making of documentary, video documetnary reconstructing the film through Kurosawa's paintings and sketches, interview with Nakadai, theatrical trailer, essays by Michael Wilmington and Anthony Davies, and more.

With RAN, master director Akira Kurosawa transforms Shakespeare's KING LEAR into an epic tragedy set in feudal Japan. On the eve of his 70th birthday, Lord Hidetora prepares to divide his empire among his three sons. In the process, he ends up disowning his youngest son, the only one who truly cares about him. The empire is engulfed in bitter warfare as the two older brothers, after fighting among themselves over the inheritance, turn on their father. Homeless and abandoned by all but his most loyal followers, Hidetora must face both his tragic present state and the actions of his brutal past.

For his 27th film, the "sensei" of Japanese cinema, Akira Kurosawa, transposes Shakespeare's KING LEAR to feudal Japan. RAN, which translates as "chaos" or "turmoil," is the tragic tale of Lord Hidetora, a warlord who decides to divide his empire among his three sons on the eve of his 70th birthday. However, Hidetora's youngest and most compassionate son, Saburo, defiantly objects to this hasty decision and is disowned by the proud, stubborn ruler. Once the two eldest sons take control of the empire, they quickly turn on their father and begin vying for total control over the land. As Hidetora is banished from his own kingdom in a bloody battle, he must confront the consequences of his violent, ruthless past. Ten years in the making, RAN represents the culmination of Kurosawa's career by revisiting his skill at adapting Shakespeare, as evidenced in THRONE OF BLOOD, and displaying the cinematic splendor of his other landmark films such as SEVEN SAMURAI and RASHOMON. With its magnificent costumes, breathtaking settings, and amazingly photographed battle sequences, the film is truly stunning. An epic on the grandest of scales, RAN is not only one of Kurosawa's finest films, it is a glorious masterpiece of Japanese cinema.

RAN was released in 1985. The film had a theatrical rerelease for its 15th anniversary on August 18, 2000 (NY/LA/SEATTLE); fall 2000 (WIDER) RAN was shot on location in Japan at Himeji Castle, Kumamoto Castle, and Nagoya Castle, in the cities of Gotemba, Kokonoe, and Shonai. Interior scenes were shot at Toho Studios and also at Kurosawa's own studio in Yokohama. Mount Aso, where many of the mountain and plains sequences were shot, is an active volcano on the island of Kyushu. Kurosawa employed roughly 1,400 extras and 250 horses for the film's enormous battle scenes. Many of the extras were enthusiastic locals from nearby towns. Utilizing his famous multicamera method, Kurosawa shot the film simultaneously from different angles using three cameras with various-size lenses. The film's visuals are strongly influenced by Noh drama. Lord Hidetora's makeup, for example, alludes to ancient Noh tradition, with his face painted to appear as either "akijo," a demon mask, or "shiwajo," the mask of a sorrow-filled elderly wanderer. In addition to KING LEAR, RAN is also partially based on the 16th-century Japanese legend of Mori, a warlord with three loyal sons. In one of the film's first scenes, Kurosawa presents Mori's story of the three arrows, supposedly unbreakable when held together. Here the director examines what might happen if all three sons were not loyal and the arrows could be broken. With its similar themes and the same leading actor (Tatsuya Nakadai), Kurosawa's previous film, KAGEMUSHA, was considered a "dry-run" for RAN. RAN cost $11.5 million to film. RAN was the winner of the 1985 New York Film Critics Award for Best Foreign Film and the 1985 National Society of Film Critics Award for Best Film.

Ran Movie Review

Customer Ran Reviews DVD

4 stars A great historical setting
Ran is not the typical samurai film. It very slowly unravels a somewhat intricate plot, as well as illustrating the agony a bad conscience can wreak with someone. The video quality is not that great (sometimes a little fuzzy), but the great plot and insight it gives into Japaneze culture makes this film worth watching. Pretty bloody, but not any worse that most action fare these days. I loved it the first time I saw it and I love it more each time I view it.

Castle Of Cagliostro DVD  (1979) Widescreen

DVD $10.29  5 stars
The feature film debut of Hayao Miyazaki (NAUSICAÄ OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND, PRINCESS MONONOKE), THE CASTLE OF CAGLIOSTRO depicts one adventure of the master thief Lupin and his rough-around-the-edges gunman, Jigen. Something of a cross between Batman, James Bond, and Cary Grant's character in TO CATCH A THIEF, Lupin is a suave ladies' man who is also given to feats of athletic daring, aided by a gadget filled belt that gets him out of more than a few scrapes. The plot has Lupin and Jigen traveling to the sleepy little country of Cagliostro and coming to the aid of the unwilling fiance of the diabolical Count Cagliostro. After CAGLIOSTRO, Miyazaki stopped creating "slapstick" feature films in favor of more serious fare; CAGLIOSTRO shows, however, that he is quite capable of delivering the goods in this genre. Based on the Lupin comics by the artist Monkey Punch, CAGLIOSTRO is a great heist/chase film that surpasses most similar live action fare and breezes by with more than a couple of inventive set pieces, as well as some excellent comic dialogue. Fraternal twins Conner (Flanery - SUICIDE KINGS) and Murphey (Reedus - GOSSIP) MacMannus are on a mission from God to rid Boston of crime. However, instead of signing up for the police force, these hard-drinking Irish-American brothers take the law into their own hands a la Charles Bronson in DEATH WISH. Heralded as saints by the city's beleaguered residents, the brothers also attract the attention of Paul Smecker (Dafoe - EXISTENZ), the openly gay FBI special agent assigned to investigate the spate of killings amongst the ranks of the Russian mafia. DVD $31.25  5 stars
In this dazzling epic from Akira Kurosawa, a petty thief named Kagemusha (Tatsuya Nakadai) gets saved from a death sentence because he resembles the warlord Shingen Takeda (also Nakadai). The warlord has been fighting two other leaders for control of 16th-century Japan and impersonators often take his place during battles to put him out of harm's way. Because of Kagemusha's strong physical similarities to the warlord, he's a perfect choice for a "shadow warrior." However, the arrangement suddenly changes when Shingen gets fatally wounded while watching a battle. Adhering to Shingen's final wish, the warlord's men keep the death a secret, and Kagemusha struggles to transform himself from a criminal into a leader. KAGEMUSHA marked a welcome return for the legendary director, who had not made a movie since 1974. Nakadai, a supporting player in earlier Kurosawa films, expertly portrays the leading role(s), almost always filled in the past by Toshirô Mifune. KAGEMUSHA also features the final screen appearance of longtime Kurosawa actor, Takashi Shimura. In order to help the film get an international release, Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas served as executive producers. Closed Captioned; English Subtitles; Special Edition

Director Goro Taniguchi (INFINITE RYVIUS, S-CRY-ED) fashions another imaginative take on intergalactic space travel in his sci-fi series PLANETES. In the year 2075, travel between the earth, moon, and various space stations has become a routine part of human existence. But the increased traffic leaves behind floating pieces of debris that present a deadly hazard for traveling starships and must be cleared by a squad of hardworking debris collectors. As the collectors' newest recruit, idealistic Ai Tanabe quickly loses her enthusiasm for outer space when she joins the Half-Section unit and meets her cynical new partner, Hachimaki. But Tanabe soon discovers that hauling in space debris is not only dull and monotonous--it carries with it a unique set of difficulties and dangers. PLANETES avoids the wild, fantastical tropes of much sc-fi anime in favor of realistic hard science that emphasizes character development and gorgeously rendered animation. This collection presents the whole series in its entirety. Animated; Standard Screen; English Subtitles

Fourteen-year-old Calvin Cambridge (Lil' Bow Wow) spends his days at the orphanage waiting to be adopted and shooting hoops with his best friend, Murph (Jonathan Lipnicki). When he starts to wear a pair of sneakers that used to belong to a famous basketball player and bear the initials M.J.--ostensibly those of basketball legend Michael Jordan--Calvin's wildest dreams begin to come true. The 4'8" teenager is suddenly an unstoppable force on the basketball court and soon finds himself an indispensable member of the LA Knights, a floundering NBA team. As long as Calvin has his magic sneakers, he believes he can do anything and be "like Mike." Ultimately, despite his newfound fame and fortune, Calvin still yearns for a family to call his own. Morris Chestnut stars as Tracey Reynolds, Calvin's mentor on the Knights team, and Crispin Glover is sufficiently creepy as Bittleman, the greedy head of the orphanage. Basketball fans will love the game footage and multiple cameos from real NBA stars like Allen Iverson and Jason Kidd. Rap star Lil' Bow Wow is impressive in his film debut, and also contributes songs to the soundtrack.
