Orugoru Christmas Soundtrack album
$9.99 The most booty-kickin' spoof Metal group to come down the pike since Spinal Tap is Steel Dragon, the Mark Wahlberg-fronted hair band in the film ROCK STAR. Along with other '80s metal tracks and modern tunes, this soundtrack makes for a great listen.
ROCK STAR is based on Tim "Ripper" Owens, who left his Judas Priest cover band to join the real thing. The cover band in the film is Blood Pollution, who give us the catchy, hard-rocking "Wasted Generation." Steel Dragon does a full-throttle cover ...

| | Paint Your Wagon CD (1969) Original Soundtrack
Orugoru Christmas Soundtrack CD music
$7.79 The movie Paint Your Wagon was an attempt to update the plot of an old stage musical by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe, with new songs by André Previn and Lerner. The soundtrack is a peculiar release; in purely musical terms, it would only be of interest to dedicated fans of Harve Presnell (who performs "They Call the Wind Maria") and Anita Gordon, who acquits herself well singing Jean Seberg's part on "A Million Miles Away Behind the Door." It is Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin, however, who do more of the singing here, and while they might not be of much interest musically, there is a certain "Golden Throats"-type allure to their songs. Neither reveals any hidden musical talents, though Eastwood does the better job of the two on his songs, particularly "I Still See Elisa." The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band also spent time working on the movie, both on camera and on the soundtrack, but their major surviving contribution is "Hand Me Down That Can O' Beans," in which they share the spotlight vocally with Lee Marvin and a male chorus; it adds nothing to their output. Harve Presnell's rendition of "They Call the Wind Maria" brings a suitably operatic approach to the piece, but it is marred ...

| | Cameo Word Up! CD (1986)
Orugoru Christmas Soundtrack songs
$4.49 The most inescapable funk single of 1986 was Cameo's brilliant "Word Up!," a perfect fusion of gimmicky production--Larry Blackmon's distinctive lead vocal was recorded through a transistor radio to give it a curiously distant, almost robotic quality--and ...

| | Aretha Franklin 30 Greatest Hits CDs (1985)
Orugoru Christmas Soundtrack CD music
$11.15 The title may not be 100-percent accurate, since the songs here are culled from Franklin's soul years, roughly between 1967 and 1974, and she's had lots more hits since then. That nit picked, however, this is a genuine embarrassment of riches, with Aretha's soaring voice and under-appreciated piano decorating one wonderful genre-defining song ("Respect," "Chain of Fools," "Natural Woman," "Since You've Been Gone") after another. The most revelatory cut is probably "I Say a Little Prayer," in which Franklin imbues the song with a spine-tingling gospel flavor without ever losing the pop delicacy of the original Dionne Warwick version. But just about everything else here is essential listening.
This compilation spans the late-'60s to the mid-'70s. Aretha's impassioned voice soars with unbridled spirit through each classic performance. This release opens with "Baby I Love You," an R&B hit from the summer of 1967. From 1972's Grammy-winning YOUNG, GIFTED AND BLACK comes "Day Dreaming," featuring gospel maven Cissy Houston providing ethereal backing vocals. Other gems include the Bacharach/David song Franklin made famous in 1968, "I Say A Little Prayer."
The strength and energy behind Aretha's performance in "(You Make Me Feel) Like a Natural Woman" make it an anthem. On her own "You Don't Think," her voice evokes tears as she pleads for the faith of her true love. Franklin's 1974 version of Ashford and Simpson's "Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing" is arranged as a ballad, a brilliant ...
| | Midnight Cowboy CD (1969) Original Soundtrack
Orugoru Christmas Soundtrack music CDs
$8.95 A well-above-average soundtrack, both for the contributions of top film scorer John Barry and some interesting odds and ends of late-'60s rock. The Midnight Cowboy soundtrack is most famous for Nilsson's hit single cover of Fred Neil's "Everybody's Talkin'," present in both the familiar version and a shorter one that is substantially different, particularly in its use of harmonica (which is not present at all on the single). Barry's ...
