After a lengthy hiatus, New Radiant Storm King reemerged in early 2006 with THE STEADY HAND, a strikingly strong album that ambitiously builds off of the group's 1990s guitar-heavy, indie-rock sound. During the Amherst, Massachusetts, ensemble's years in limbo, vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Peyton Pinkerton was an integral member of the Pernice Brothers, and Joe Pernice's superb sense of popcraft clearly rubbed off on the NRSK aesthetic, which, this time around, boasts subtle vocal harmonies, soaring guitar lines, and tight rhythms. Many of these tunes nod to the thick, chunky guitar sounds of early-'90s acts such as Sugar and Swervedriver, particularly "The Winding Staircase" and "Accountant of the Year," two surging and dynamic tracks that exemplify this impressive outing by a notably revitalized band.

Magnet - "The Steady Hand feels as vital as anything from the band's 90s run, but with a natural swap of the New England college-angst lyrics for more adult concerns." Magnet (p.108) - "[A] strong example of what the band has never wavered from: great indie rock....With a greater inclination toward classic hooks and dense arrangements. THE STEADY HAND feels as vital as anything from the band's 90's run..." | | Minus 5 Down With Wilco CD (2003)
Steady Hand CD music
$13.69 Since its formation, the Minus 5 has been a supergroup of sorts, led by Scott McCaughey (Young Fresh Fellows/R.E.M. sideman) and Peter Buck (R.E.M.). As the title would suggest, they are joined this time around by all four members of Wilco, the group responsible for the most talked-about recording of both 2001 and 2002 (Yankee Hotel Foxtrot). Down with Wilco was to be released by a major label until it suffered the same fate as YHF, when it was suddenly shelved. Like that ...

| | Faith Hill Fireflies CD (2005)
Steady Hand music CDs
$15.65 Coming after the relative commercial disappointment of 2002's pop-oriented CRY--and, not at all coincidentally, Gretchen Wilson's rise as the new Everygirl of country--Faith Hill's FIREFLIES is a blatant attempt to ditch the singer's glamourpuss image and reassert her country roots, such things having become fashionable again. This isn't a problem, however: Shania Twain-like chart pop wasn't Hill's forte, and FIREFLIES brings her back where she belongs.
The first single, "Mississippi Girl," is Hill's best song in years. A Dixie Chicks-like piece of sweet country-pop with a few bluegrass trimmings, the tune was written by country hitmaker John Rich. Rich also penned some of the other standouts here, like the laid-back "Sunshine and Summertime" and "Like We Never Loved At All," a dramatic, '70s-style duet between Hill and her husband Tim McGraw. Three other songs are from the catalogue of alt-country singer/songwriter Lori McKenna, taking Hill into a folkish vein similar to Mary-Chapin Carpenter. The overall lack of bombast suits Hill's girl-next-door delivery perfectly, making FIREFLIES a much-needed artistic comeback after a dubious detour.

| | Electric Light Orchestra A New World Record - Expanded Edition CD (1976) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Steady Hand songs
$7.59 Also available in a 3-pack with FACE THE MUSIC and DISCOVERY.
1976's A NEW WORLD RECORD is both a classic of commercial '70s pop and an archetypal ELO album. From the outer-space synths and rich orchestrations that open the album to Jeff Lynne's meticulous production and Beatlesque melodies, A NEW WORLD RECORD is magnificent ear candy. Both ambitious enough to appeal to "serious" rock fans and ultra-catchy enough to sound terrific on Top 40 radio (the plaintively gorgeous, McCartney-like "Telephone Line" and the anthemic "Livin' Thing" were well-deserved smashes), ELO was one of the few '70s bands whose appeal covered both the FM and AM spectrums. The album even resurrects "Do Ya," a classic single by Lynne's former band, the Move, in a splashy new version.
The next ELO album, 1977's elaborate double-album OUT OF THIS WORLD, was probably the band's commercial high point, but A NEW WORLD RECORD is the group's artistic high-water mark.
Jeff Lynne reportedly regards this album and its follow-up, Out of the Blue, as the high points in the band's history. One might be better off opting for A New World Record over its successor, however, as ...
