| | Mother Hips Red Tandy CD Mother Hips Discography of CDs
After a four-year hiatus, Mother Hips return with the Red Tandy EP, and it seems they're still at the top of their game. Co-leaders Tim Bluhm and Greg Loiacono not only have great vocal harmonies, but excellent guitar interplay as well, and though the band plays it loose, they know all the right classic rock moves. "Red Tandy" is pure guitar pop pleasure: catchy as all get-out with great harmonized vocals, killer backing vox, and some ripping guitars. "Colonized" hits a bit harder, something like Neil Young jamming with Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, while "Blue Tomorrow" adds a slight psychedelic touch. The EP closes with another version of "Red Tandy," which is such a great song you won't mind hearing it twice. This will only whet the appetite for their forthcoming full-length. ~ Sean Westergaard
Mother Hips: Paul Hoaglin (bass guitar); Tim Bluhm, John Hofer, Greg Loiacono.

Red Tandy album
$10.45 "Here In Angola," "Pandora," and "Indian Summer" were originally released on the LP INDIAN SUMMER.
24 CARROTS is folk-rocker Al Stewart's 1980 album, recorded with Shot in the Dark. This reissue features five bonus tracks, "Here in Angola", "Indian Summer", "Pandora", "Delia's Gone", and "Princess Olivia".
The pun of the title of 24 Carrots -- the first overt signal of humor Al Stewart has displayed in years, possibly ever -- illustrates that a lot has changed since 1978's Time Passages. The loosening of his wit is perhaps the most evident, but the most significant is the departure of producer Alan Parsons, who collaborated with Stewart on his mid-'70s triptych of masterpieces. In truth, 24 Carrots isn't far removed from those high points, because he is indeed still writing at a remarkably consistent pace. No, this record isn't quite at the high standard of the previous three albums, but it does have a number of brilliant moments, from the opening "Running Man" through the silly but effective "Mondo Sinistro" and the gorgeous "Midnight Rocks." Though there are some songs that don't quite click (something that did not happen on the aforementioned trio), overall the record coheres nicely, thanks not ...

$14.35 AVALANCHE (1968) is not the most prominent record in the canon of folk-rock chameleon Eric Andersen--it did not even make the transfer to CD until 2007. However, this unjustly overlooked record stands as a perfect example of Andersen's unique skill at pouring himself into an extraordinary numbers ...

| | Stevie Nicks Soundstage Sessions CD (2009)
Red Tandy album
$15.65 Rock's original gold dust woman capped a return to the road in the '00s with this stunningly on-point live collection--her first. With tracks taken from a live set in Chicago in October 2007 and later bolstered by overdubs from a Nashville session (essentially studio strings and backing vocals), THE SOUNDSTAGE SESSIONS matches the energy of a hot live set with pristine studio touches. Nicks concentrates mostly on her solo material (there are only two Fleetwood Mac era songs here--none from RUMOURS) and sounds in fantastic voice (still husky and heavily vibratoed) as she digs into synthesizer rockers like "Stand Back" and "If Anyone ...
| | Doors Soft Parade CD (1969) Gold; Remastered
Red Tandy CD music
$14.42 Dismissed by the benighted as the Doors' "pop album," SOFT PARADE is one of the band's most adventurous recordings, utilizing strings and horns without resorting to schlocky over-production and moving far beyond their blues roots. Morrison was fully into his shaman phase by 1969, and his obsession with that image is reflected in the proselytizing air of "Tell All the People," and of course "Shaman's Blues." The album's biggest hit "Touch Me," while easily the group's most radio-friendly offering, is a pop classic that ranks among the great '60s AM radio tunes. "Wild Child" is a brief return to the blues-rock of yore, but the title track is a sophisticated, extended piece that moves through several different moods and textures, full of the elliptical, poetic lyrics that were Morrison's trademark.
The weakest studio album recorded with Jim Morrison in the group, partially because their experiments with brass and strings on about half the tracks weren't entirely successful. More to the point, though, this was their weakest set of material, low lights including filler like "Do It" and "Runnin' Blue," a strange bluegrass-soul blend that was a small hit. On the other hand, about half the record is quite good, especially the huge hit "Touch Me" (their most successful integration of orchestration), the vicious hard ...
| | Brian Lynch Spheres Of Influence CD (1997)
Red Tandy music CDs
$13.15 Trumpeter Brian Lynch was featured in the last edition of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers but his interests have often reached beyond hard bop; in fact he has often performed with Eddie Palmieri. On this excellent set, the talented trumpeter utilizes rhythms that range from straight-ahead to Afro-Cuban (most obviously on "Palmieri's Mood") and funky. On five of his originals and tunes by Lerne & Loewe (an inventive reworking of "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face"), Duke Pearson and Wayne Shorter ...

| | Jethro Tull Songs From The Wood CD (1977) Remastered
Red Tandy CD music
$9.99 In terms of rustic, tights-wearing, elf-loving, flute-heavy, British/Celtic folk-tinged '70s prog-rock, SONGS FROM THE WOOD is the most Tull of all Jethro Tull albums. By 1977 the band had ventured far enough from its heavy blues-rock beginnings to create a completely unique, idiosyncratic sound, filled with European folk mythology, rural imagery and an endearing combination of art-rock and British folk-rock. Elaborate synthesizer fanfares mix with delicate acoustic guitar tapestries, complex arrangements and odd time signatures. SONGS FROM THE WOOD strikes the perfect balance between the proggie ambition of THICK AS A BRICK, the storytelling style of AQUALUNG and the courtly, medieval air of MINSTREL IN THE GALLERY.
This album, which seemed so soft and lyrical in its original CD incarnation, comes to us with some surprisingly sharp edges in its remastered form -- the 24-bit audio allows us to practically hear the action on Ian Anderson's acoustic guitar and puts Barriemore Barlow's drums in the room with us, suddenly giving the whole album the texture of a live recording. Oddly enough, in the case of this album, the result is a roughening of many of the textures to go with closer presence of all of the instruments -- thus, Songs From the Wood ends up sounding a bit more like the Tull albums around it than it previously did. Of the two bonus tracks, "Beltane" is a harder-rocking song than anything on the original LP, while "Velvet Green" keeps to the pastoral mood of the existing album, with a very pleasant melody. ~ Bruce Eder
Digitally remastred reissue of 1977 album includes two bonus tracks 'Beltane' (taken from the album 20 Years of Jethro Tull - track done at end of sessions) & 'Velvet Green' (live) (taken from 20 years of Jethro Tull - BBC In Concert Recording 1977). 11 tracks & liner notes written by Ian Anderson. ...

$16.05 Eleanor McEvoy is an impressive debut album from McEvoy, proving that she is not only capable of fusing contemporary folk and celtic music, but that she's a singer-songwriter with a graceful, individual voice. The mainstream had finally caught up with Jimmy Eat World.
