NO NEW YORK is one of the definitive compilation albums not only of the post-punk era, but of rock-&-roll history. It is perhaps the only album to completely define a musical subgenre by itself. While James Chance & the Contortions, Mars, Teenage Jesus & the Jerks, and DNA made later recordings (in fact, Lydia Lunch and Arto Lindsay, leaders of the latter two bands, would have long and prolific careers), the 16 songs on the Brian Eno-produced NO NEW YORK encapsulate the No Wave movement. Its defining lack of musical sophistication--or even basic instrumental competence--could not be sustained for long. The Contortions, led by Chance's stuttering, squawking saxophone and hectoring vocals, were like a bizarre parody of 1970s funk, right down to their demented cover of James Brown's "I Can't Stand Myself." Teenage Jesus & the Jerks were arguably the closest to a conventional punk band, with the 35-second blurt "Red Alert" sounding like an early precursor of what would become hardcore. The artsy minimalism of Mars and DNA strips the music down to basic building blocks of rhythm and noise, to very different ends. Together, they sound both of their moment and timeless.

One of the brightest and most famous projects of the entire punk/new wave scene, "No New York" was released in 1978 on Island's sub-label Antilles. Featuring some of the most incredible rule breaking bands of the underground N.Y.C. art and music scene, t

There was definitely a dank underbelly swelling during the punk explosion of the late '70s. The Dead Boys crawled under it and found themselves quite comfortable. Making music in New York's subterranean regions allowed the band an unparalleled sense of vulgarity and a freedom to assault for assault's sake. Thus, YOUNG, LOUD, ...

This live album was originally released as a double LP in 1982, when the Talking Heads were still extremely active. Twenty-two years later, the bonus-laden, two-CD reissue serves as a fascinating in-concert document of the phases the band went through during its first five years. The late-'70s tracks on the first disc show the early version of the band in all its geeky glory, mixing spastic New Wave quirkiness, funk rhythms, and art-school lyrics. It's intriguing to hear the difference between some of the songs' inception and their eventual recorded versions, such as a relatively straightforward "Electricity (Drugs)," which would turn ominous and atmospheric on FEAR OF MUSIC. The second disc captures the expanded, early-'80s version of the band, with extra musicians and backing vocalists in tow, tackling the fugue-like art-funk masterpieces of the aforementioned album and REMAIN IN LIGHT. It's all the more impressive to hear the interlocking ...

Bathed in a soft blue light, Lou Reed and his band take to the stage at Spain's Benicassim Festival for this live recording. Shot in 2004, the aptly named SPANISH FLY sees Reed working his way through a selection of highlights from his solo career, as well as a number of classic Velvet Underground numbers. The enormous crowd affords Reed the reverence he deserves as the gentle, lilting melody of "Venus in Furs" acquiesces to some abrasive cello work from Jane Scarpantoni, who makes an accomplished replacement for Reed's former Velvet Underground ...

Hollywood studios are notorious for liberally borrowing ideas from each other, with the resulting clutch of similarly-themed films often bewildering the public as they try to decide which movie to go and see. In 2005 Bennett Miller directed CAPOTE, an Oscar-winning dramatization of Truman Capote's traumatic experiences writing the celebrated novel IN COLD BLOOD. In 2006 Douglas McGrath (COMPANY MAN) directed INFAMOUS, a movie that follows exactly the same premise. Although it's difficult to see why such a story would need to be immortalized in celluloid for a second time, McGrath does ...

Long ago, being a fan of XTC and specifically its leader Andy Partridge became work, something that required patience and concentration, effort that didn't necessarily pay back in the desired dividends. XTC always was a band that inspired fanatical devotion -- catchy and clever and unabashedly pop their music may be, but it was also cheerfully idiosyncratic, the kind of pop that doesn't reach the pop charts -- but their cult dwindled down to the hardcore during the '90s when the band was officially on strike against their record label Virgin; seven-year disappearances have the tendency to do that. When the long draught finally ended with the lovely Apple Venus, Pt. 1 and the relatively harder Apple Venus, Pt. 2, it seemed like the wait was not in vain, since XTC rewarded their fans with a pair of rich, complementary albums. Discontent amongst the hardcore didn't surface during the comeback, it bubbled up in the aftermath of the comeback, as Apple Venus was spun off into various supplemental editions -- first came the demos, then instrumental incarnations, then repackagings, culminating in an Apple Venus box in 2006 which did have a pair of new songs from Andy and partner Colin Moulding, who by this point had turned estranged -- and when Partridge finally began fulfilling his fans long-harbored fantasy of officially opening his vaults for official release of demos and outtakes. Coat of Many Cupboards, a four-disc box of XTC rarities, turned out to be mere prelude to Fuzzy Warbles, a multi-disc series consisting of nothing but demos, outtakes, unheard songs, working versions, instrumentals, experiments, and jokes that never saw the light of day. Originally, Fuzzy Warbles was designed as an XTC project but Moulding bowed out during the planning stages, leaving it as a Partridge-only production. Although Moulding surely had interesting music in the vaults, his absence hardly hurt the series because Andy always was the general in charge of XTC and it was his tunes that made for the bulk of the bootlegs and rumors that circulated prior to the release of the first two installments of Fuzzy Warbles in 2002. Those first volumes suggested that the whole series would be an embarrassment of riches, filled with ...
