One would be foolish to have a problem with a one-disc soul overview including Otis Redding's "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay," Sam & Dave's "Hold On! I'm Comin'," the Spinners' "I'll Be Around," Dionne Warwick's "Walk On By," Aretha Franklin's "R-E-S-P-E-C-T," Percy Sledge's "When a Man Loves a Woman," and Brook Benton's "Rainy Night in Georgia." Ultimate Soul doesn't just score points for what it chooses to include. Unlike most other soul compilations, it's generous -- it includes over a dozen other hits from the '60s and '70s. As a quick beginners' guide, you couldn't ask for much more. ~ Andy Kellman Ultimate Soul Review

Ultimate Soul album
$11.18 Last time around, Shakira touched upon so many styles she couldn't be contained on one album, splitting Oral Fixation in two. This time, she focuses on one sound only: a pulsating electro-disco that crosses all boundaries and welcomes all nationalities. Such concentration behooves Shakira, freeing her to release her inner She Wolf, a wild wacko who's as coo coo as she is carnal. And for as sexy as Shakira is -- crucially, her music is sexy too -- what really gives She Wolf its bite is her inspired nuttiness, how she laments that Matt Damon's not meant for her, and wishes her ex-lover and his new girl a horrible vacation where the room smells and the toilet doesn't flush. "Darling, it is no joke, this is lycanthropy," she sings on the title track with no small trace of humor, and this blend of cheerful weirdness and sick beats -- often supplied by the Neptunes, delivering tough, sensual rhythms in a way they haven't in a long time, but also John Hill and Wyclef Jean -- is giddily addicting, a celebration of all the strange sensuality that comes out at night.

$10.45 The soundtrack to rubber-faced comedian Jim Carrey's black comedy ME, MYSELF & IRENE is as schizophrenic as his character; it doesn't know whether to be a modern rock collection or a Steely Dan tribute album. Eight of the 15 tracks are Fagan/Brecker compositions interpreted by ...
| | Status Quo Singles Collection 1966-73 CD (1985) (Import) United Kingdom
Ultimate Soul album
$28.89 Disc 1 consists of the A and B sides of the 13 singles originally released on the Pye label; disc 2 consists of 23 rare and previously unreleased tracks.
SINGLES COLLECTION 1966-73 is a 2000 compilation of tracks recorded by the British rock group Status Quo.
Like the dog that titled Status Quo's fourth album, The Singles Collection 1966-1973 is very much a beast of two heads, the first (representing the band's output between 1966 and 1969) shifting its gaze between Kinks-ish beat and British psych and the second (wrapping up the band's releases and re-releases at the end of that span) sinking its teeth into the unapologetic boogie blues that have remained the band's stock in trade ever since. It's a misleading mélange, at least in terms of chronology. The Quo cut four albums for the Pye label, before departing in 1972 for Vertigo and fame -- the last in that sequence, Dog of Two Heads, was released in December 1971. However, the moment "Paper Plane" gave the transplanted band a major hit in early 1973, Pye began digging into the vaults and the last six tracks on The Singles Collection represent the fruits of those labors. In terms of the band's own discography and development, they are meaningless. Nevertheless, the first complete roundup of all ten original Pye 45s (and B-sides) remains an essential compilation, both for Quo fans in general and for students of British psychedelia as it squirmed, post-1967, in search of new directions. The Quo eventually found theirs in the aforementioned boogie but, before that, the Bee Gees-esque ballad "Are You Growing Tired of My Life" and a rocking "Price of Love" both offered possible new avenues, and one cannot help but wonder where the band might have gone next, had "Down the Dustpipe" and "In My Chair" not struck gold during 1970-1971. While disc one is the A-Z of Quo's early work, disc two offers a more patchwork approach to the same period, first unearthing the four 45s the band ...

$15.05 Recorded live in Washington, D.C. in 1981. Includes liner notes by Peter Guralnick.
For pure soul testifying, no one compares to Solomon Burke. He earned his title -- "King of Soul" -- by bringing the gospel fervor of the Southern preacher to his performances, and no recording proves his command over an audience quite like Soul Alive! Recorded in 1983 in Washington, D.C., the set proves Burke had lost little from his '60s heyday; he works through nearly all of his hits, spurring on the concert-goers ...
