Ultimate 16: Jazz Cafe music CDs
$14.99 A sequel of sorts to Chris Botti's 2006 PBS special, LIVE WITH ORCHESTRA & SPECIAL GUESTS, the September 2008 event LIVE IN BOSTON found the sartorially splendid cool jazz trumpeter accompanied by the Boston Symphony and a collection of celebrity vocalists. Also available as a DVD, the concert delivers an overview of popular music, with jazz standards like "I've Got You Under My Skin" right alongside "Ave Maria" and Sting's "If I Ever Lose My Faith in You." Whether featuring rocker Steven Tyler, AMERICAN IDOL chanteuse Katharine McPhee, or pop-opera superstar Josh Groban, all the tunes are presented in Botti's inimitable, Chet Baker-influenced uber-smooth style.

| | George Winston Autumn CD (1980) Windham Hill 20th Anniversary Edition
Ultimate 16: Jazz Cafe album
$8.89 Principally recorded on June 19-20, 1980. Includes liner notes by George Winston.
AUTUMN was superstar new age pianist George Winston's first album to sell more than 1,000,000 copies. Listening to these spare, emotionally rich pieces, it's easy to understand why. But it's also clear what sets Winston apart from the hordes of other new age piano ...

Ultimate 16: Jazz Cafe CD music
$19.35 This two-disc set, generous at 50 tracks, is probably the most comprehensive Julie London anthology available. While certainly no match for her more technically accomplished contemporaries, London was a fine, appealing singer who used her cool, understated alto to excellent advantage.

| | Charlie Parker Diz 'N Bird At Carnegie Hall CD (1997)
Ultimate 16: Jazz Cafe music CDs
$9.09 For starters, a clarification: this CD contains only five cuts in which Parker and Gillespie front a quintet. The remaining ten tunes are performed by Gillespie with his big band and do not include Parker. The reason for this, as explained by Ira Gitler in his excellent liner notes, lies in the origin of the concert itself-originally meant only to feature Gillespie's band and guest Ella Fitzgerald. Parker was then invited to join Gillespie's rhythm section for a reunion of sorts in which the twin fathers of bop would hold forth on a handful of their seminal tunes. This they did, and both the music and the fidelity are all that you could want.
Dizzy's big band was packed with great players, and the repertoire reflected many aspects of the trumpeter's personality. CARNEGIE HALL's selections represent the Afro-Cuban sound he helped midwife ("Cubano Be, Cubano Bop," featuring Chano Pozo and Lorenzo Salan); virtuosity disarmed by goofball humor ("Oop-Pop-A-Da," "Salt Peanuts"); straight-ahead bop (Tadd Dameron's "Hot House" and Parker's "Relaxin' At Camarillo"); and more adventurous writing (John Lewis' "Tocatta For Trumpet" and Gil Fuller's "Things To Come").
Includes liner notes by Ira Gitler.

| | Ben Pollack Vol 4 CD (2002)
Ultimate 16: Jazz Cafe songs
$15.89 The fourth volume in Jazz Oracle's Ben Pollack reissue program covers the period right after Benny Goodman and cornetist Jimmy McPartland had departed. They were soon replaced by clarinetist Matty Matlock and trumpeter Charlie Teagarden, but the main star throughout is trombonist/singer Jack Teagarden. This CD has 13 selections recorded by Pollack's Park Central Orchestra and by the same basic group under the names of Gil Rodin and Jack Teagarden, plus ten alternate takes. ...

| | Steve Burns Songs For Dust Mites CD (2003)
Ultimate 16: Jazz Cafe CD music
$12.29 On his debut album, Songs for Dust Mites, Steve Burns, better known as Steve from Blue's Clues, teams up with an all-star backing band and production team that includes Dave Fridmann and the Flaming Lips' Steven Drozd. Occasionally, Fridmann's lush, polished production and Drozd's distinctive drumming overshadow Burns' music; "Troposphere" is bright and bouncy, a soft explosion that recalls the Lips' "Fight Test," and the pianos and synths on "A Song for Dustmites" attempt to inflate the song into something it's not. All things considered, though, this is Burns' album, full of fragile, whimsical songs like "Mighty Little Man," the tale of an everyday superhero, and "What I Do on Saturday," a playful pop song. Songs for Dust Mites reveals Burns as more of a straightforward singer/songwriter than his influences and collaborators, and the album's quietest tracks are the most distinctive. "1>" is a clever look at a dysfunctional relationship; "Stick Around" is understated and melancholy, recalling the brokenhearted urban folk of Beck's Sea Change; and "A Reason"'s delicately plucked guitars and subtle percussion are a deceptively gentle foil for some cutting lyrics ("I need a reason/To see you again/I need a reason/Let's not be friends"). On songs like "Maintain," ...
