Annie ran into some obstructions on the way to the release of her second album. Don't Stop was supposed to come out on Island well over a year before it was finally issued on Norway's Smalltown Supersound; Island had gone as far as releasing "I Know UR Girlfriend Hates Me" as a single and video, as well as a cover of Stacey Q's "Two of Hearts" as a promotional single, but Annie and Island split, and Don't Stop finally surfaced with a different track list that included neither "Girlfriend" nor "Hearts." Mahalia Jackson was known as the "Gospel Queen" for over a half a century, until her death in 1972. She is still regarded as the greatest gospel singer of all time. On the 2-disc box set GOSPELS, SPIRITUALS & HYMNS, the listener is treated to Mahalia's best work from the '50s and '60s; a sweeping education in gospel, jazz and blues when Sister Mahalia testifies. Inspiration is the cornerstone of this passionate collection. The 36 songs range from the rock-the-pulpit, foot-stomping "Come On Children, Let's Sing" to deeply, internal blue ballads like "If I Can Help Somebody." Spirituals, gospels and hymns were used to "praise the Lord" ("What A Friend We Have In Jesus"), to teach the Bible ("Didn't It Rain") or to relieve the pain of slavery ("Great Gettin' Up Morning"). Others were for simple inspiration; listen to "Trouble Of The World," for instance, and bear witness to how Jackson moves the soul. Then there's the wondrous, live "Elijah Rock," as infectious as any hip-hop single. The moniker "Gospel Queen" and her imposing, historic image might create the false image of intense, foreboding music, but quite is the opposite that is true. Mahalia's music is joyous and approachable. She took the restrictions of Negro church music and loosened it, almost freeing its soul in a more accessible, jazzy direction. There is the promise of a brighter future in her music, that often speaks of despairing times. She has a remarkable range, dense and sumptuous on the dark "My God Is Real," and soulful and soaring on "It Is Well With My Soul." Then there's her country-sounding take on "I Found The Answer." The connection of traditional black gospel music to country music is a good lesson in roots, with "Satisfied Mind" serving as a prime example. Recorded in Culver City, California between October 30, 1950 and March 12, 1951. Includes liner notes by Miles Kreuger and Marilee Bradford. All selections are stereo except "Main Title," "Ravenal Is Gone," "Packet Boat," "Natchez Dock" and "Reunion." All songs written by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II except "Bill" (Kern/P.G. Wodehouse) and "After The Ball" (Charles K. Harris). This reissue of SHOW BOAT includes extra versions of "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man" and "Bill." The movie versions were sung by Annette Warren, a vocal double for actress Ava Gardner. Ava Gardner's own versions are provided as outtakes. The soundtrack album for the 1951 MGM production of Show Boat (the third film version of the 1927 musical) was released in the summer of that year and spent 19 weeks at the top of the Billboard album chart. The 10" LP (also released as a set of 45s) featured eight songs -- "Make Believe," "Bill," "Life Upon the Wicked Stage," "You Are Love," "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man," "I Might Fall Back on You," "Why Do I Love You," and "Ol' Man River" -- sung by Kathryn Grayson, Howard Keel, Ava Gardner (whose voice was dubbed in the film, but not on the album), Marge and Gower Champion, and William Warfield. This 29-track CD, running nearly 73 minutes (the film itself only ran 107), is more of a reconstruction ...
