Mahler I: Complete Recordings On Deutsche Grammophon
$18.09 The pairing of avant-garde cellist Ernst Reijseger with post-bop pianist Franco D'Andrea provides anything but predictable music. D'Andrea is unaccompanied for a boundary-stretching approach to Duke Ellington's "In a Sentimental Mood." The leader begins Cole Porter's "Night and Day" alone, gradually working through variations on repeated arco riffs until the pianist makes a delayed, sparse entrance. D'Andrea's percolating Latin-flavored "Two Colors" is more accessible, though with a constantly twisting theme. D'Andrea's rather freewheeling "Afro Abstraction" shows that he is completely comfortable in a free jazz setting, with Reijseger playing soft accompaniment and a bit of percussion on his instrument. Dutch pianist Misha Mengelberg contributed the quirky "Complex Eight," a humorous piece that defies the expected paths. Recommended. ~ Ken Dryden

| | Elvis Costello Kojak Variety CDs (1995)
Mahler I: Complete Recordings On Deutsche Grammophon
$27.29 Costello was always something of a musical sponge, soaking up an eclectic bunch of influences and assimilating them into an original vision that was fed by tradition but pointed straight to the future. Here he pays tribute to the musical heroes of his youth, with cover versions of songs both obscure and familiar. The accent is on blues and R&B, as EC tackles James Carr's anguished, soulful "Pouring Water on a Drowning Man" and Willie Dixon's vibrant "Hidden Charms." Along the way, Elvis redefines some of his favorite tunes by radically recasting them. Dylan's "I Threw it All Away" become a soul torch ballad. The Louvin Brothers' "Must You Throw Dirt in My Face" is turned into an R&B lament. Session monsters like Jim Keltner and James Burton inject the proper amount of grit into the proceedings, making this a surprisingly fresh-sounding walk through the American roots of one of Britain's finest singer-songwriters.
Elvis Costello recorded the 15 songs that comprised his covers album Kojak Variety in 1990, but the album sat in the vaults for five years, with some songs trickling out on soundtracks, with the entire album eventually leaking out as a bootleg prior to its release in 1995. Given this slow, steady crawl to release and the nature of bootlegs and B-sides, it's reasonable to assume from its slow unveiling that the album was a collection of covers that he recorded with different bands over different years, when quite the opposite was true -- all 15 songs were the cut with the same band, all sequestered away in Barbados. However, the bonus disc that accompanies Rhino's 2004 expanded, double-CD reissue of Kojak Variety is indeed a crazy quilt of covers, taken from different sessions recorded during the '90s. Many of these have been previously released, either as B-sides or more often as contributions to various-artists tribute albums (or, in the case of Dave Bartholomew's "That's How You Got Killed Before," Costello sang it for an album by the Dirty Dozen Brass B
| | Seven Steps: The Complete Columbia Recordings Of Miles Davis: 1963-1964 CDs (2004) Limited Edition
Mahler I: Complete Recordings On Deutsche Grammophon
$88.59 Initial pressings of SEVEN STEPS are packaged with a deluxe metal spine.
Also includes a 92-page booklet with rare photos, complete discography and essays by Michael Cuscuna and Bob Blumenthal.
All tracks have been digitally mastered using 24-bit technology.
In the 1960s, trumpeter Miles Davis became a star outside of the jazz world, first with what history refers to as "the Quintet" with Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock, then with his highly influential post-BITCHES BREW electric bands. But there was a "transitional" period, after John Coltrane left Davis's employ and before the Shorter/Hancock era, which the SEVEN STEPS box set based around the SEVEN STEPS TO HEAVEN album documents in its entirety, often in a live context.
Davis was seeking the right combination of musicians for his sonic flights, where hard-bop and modal styles could be combined with a wide-open, increasingly elastic sound. Before settling on Shorter (present here), he tried the conventionally hearty, blues-accented bop approach of saxophonist George Coleman and the rippling, somewhat more avant-garde Sam Rivers. Both soar and sear at their respective best, providing remarkable contrast to Davis's magically cool horn. UK-born pianist Victor Feldman plays on some tracks, Hancock on others; the drum chair features Tony Williams (also an explorer of avant expression) and Frank Butler (a crackling, swinging mainstream bopper). SEVEN STEPS includes material originally available on the early-'60s albums IN EUROPE and FOUR & MORE, among others, with (attention, collectors!) the inclusion of eight previously unreleased tracks.
Personnel: Miles Davis (trumpet); Miles Davis; Ron Carter (double bass); Tony Ruption Williams , Tony Williams (drums); George Coleman, Sam Rivers, Wayne Shorter (tenor saxophone); Victor Feldman, Herbie Hancock (piano); Frank Butler (drums).

$11.09 Beauty through melody. That's the heart and center of 'Just Yesterday,' the second disc of solo piano work from Michael Hanna. Struck against a fluid background of rolling chords, stories are played out on black and white, each a lament for that which will never be again. The album is comprised of seven originals and four arrangements of traditional songs, all performed in Michael's passionate style. Smooth and relaxing, his music evokes a peace and a gentle nostalgia, perfect for reflection and meditation."The first time I heard Michael's music, I was really moved by it. His beautiful melodies and the incredible expression with which he plays make the music unfold like a sad story...as a visual person, I always value music that paints an interesting picture. 'Of Those Now Gone' really does that."-Scott Fielder, photographer and directorRecommended: 'Whispered Prayer' or 'First Love.'
