Altoist Donald Harrison gained his initial fame in the late '70s when he was a member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, following that up by co-leading a notable quintet with trumpeter Terence Blanchard. Although he never quite became a poll winner or a major influential force, Harrison has always been a solid improviser. New York Cool moves his career up a notch and is one of his finest recordings to date. Reuniting in 2005 with bassist Ron Carter and drummer Billy Cobham (the trio had recorded Heroes for the Nagel Heyer label in 2002), Harrison and his sidemen constantly challenge each other, with each of the musicians feeling free to set the direction of the performances. The repertoire is comprised of "Body and Soul," "Harrisburg Address" (based on "I Got Rhythm"), "Easy Living," "I'll Remember April," "Star Eyes," Ron Carter's "Third Plane" (which deserves to become a standard), and the medium-tempo "Blues for Happy People." The musicians feed off each other's ideas and their interplay is full of subtle surprises and unpredictable moments. New York Cool demonstrates that there is plenty of life still to be found in bebop standards when they are played in creative fashion. Highly recommended. ~ Scott Yanow

New York Cool: Live At The Blue Note songs
$10.15 KIT MCCLURE - JUST THE THING – THE SWEETHEARTS PROJECT REVISITEDA STORY SPANNING SEVEN DECADES OF WOMEN IN JAZZ"The International Sweethearts of Rhythm, an important all women band of the 1940’s, have been an inspiration to me since I first heard them on the Rosetta Records release (1984). It has been a great privilege for me and my band to record a two CD tribute to the Sweethearts in homage to their musicianship, their music, their spirit and their story. This has been a labor of love." -- Kit McClure The Kit McClure Band made its debut at the Ritz in New York City in 1982. The band became a popular fixture in the New York nightclub scene, and was soon offered a tour with the great Cab Calloway. This led to recording industry interest from Island Records, and Kit and her band were put on payroll to prepare a show with the rock star Robert Palmer. Palmer featured Kit on saxophone in his band and featured the Kit McClure Band within his show. This show played sold-out houses at Radio City Music Hall, Garden State Arts Center and similar venues across the Northeast. Eight tours of Japan ensued, and in between Kit found time to produce the Kit McClure Band's debut recording, Some Like It Hot, on RedHot Records. The success of Some Like it Hot brought the attention of jazz legend Teo Macero, who produced McClure's second release, Burning, in 1996. McClure and her band toured Europe five times in support of these two recordings and then settled into a steady calendar of US dates. The Kit McClure Band is as dedicated to keeping a dance floor full as it is to providing a great show in concert halls and at jazz festivals. The band's music ranges from transcriptions of Duke Ellington’s and Count Basie’s popular works all the way to the soulful grooves of Aretha Franklin, James Brown and original compositions and arrangements by Kit McClure and her band mates. As a dance orchestra the Kit McClure Band has enlivened ballrooms across the USA, including the inaugural ball of President ...

New York Cool: Live At The Blue Note album
$16.45 “whatever Lucy says” is laid-back rhythms, smokey vocals and gorgeous stories. Sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes comforting, Louise sings purely and unaffectedly, in a heartfelt, direct-from-her-soul-to-yours manner.Louise's great love, she will tell you, is songwriting. Songwriting of any kind. Of late, she has been writing for other artists, successfully achieving cuts on major label releases in Australia. So far the songs that she has released under her own name have been r&b/soul releases. “whatever Lucy says” is certainly a departure but the voice and the attention to lyric and melody ...
