A friend to and affiliate of Pharoahe Monch and Organized Konfusion, New York-based rapper O.C. dropped his fourth release, SMOKE AND MIRRORS, in 2005. That O.C. has provocative rhymes and sharp skills on the mic is indisputable, but it is his collaboration with producer Mike Loe that really gives SMOKE AND MIRRORS its legs. Loe's tracks can be epic and sweeping, with cinematic touches, yet he is not averse to throwing in an R&B-flavored hook or an experimental break. Lean, smart, and possessed of that all-too-rare hip-hop integrity, SMOKE AND MIRRORS is a powerful effort from Loe and the no-nonsense O.C.
Personnel: O.C. (rap vocals); Eric Krasno (guitar); Rashawn Ross (trumpet); Adam Deitch (keyboards, drums); Eric Coomes (bass guitar).

Smoke And Mirrors album
$12.09 The easy harmony sounds of Baltimore's Softones -- Marvin Brown, Steve Jackson, Elton Lynch, and Byron Summerville -- enjoyed limited popularity in the States, rarely ranging beyond the boundaries of the East Coast. Under Hugo & Luigi guidance, they scored with a fancy reworking of "That Old Black Magic" on H & L Records, but got labeled as remake artists and Hugo & Luigi studio puppets -- the producers/writers who stifled the Stylistics' record sales in the States. The Softones were forced to sing bad material, period! The Best of the Softones features one live cut, "You Go Your Way, I'll Go Mine," recorded in Japan, and 16 studio productions. They shine on the wistful "My Dream," written by lead singer Brown, whose bell-clear falsetto floats like a bar of Ivory on the lush ballad. There is more slow magic, including "I'm Gonna Prove It," "Hey There Lonely Girl," and "Silly Billy," a rare Ohio Players tune, but four insipid, campy compositions by Hugo & ...

Smoke And Mirrors music CDs
$12.75 On MADE IN BROOKLYN, hip-hop heads get a chance to see just how far Masta Killa has come as an MC. Since his first appearance on "Da Mystery of Chessboxin," Killa was noted for his stylistic similarities to the GZA. From the late '90s on, his flow has evolved into one of the most understated deliveries in hip-hop--a chillingly straightforward minimalist monotone. MADE IN BROOKLYN is a solid effort, thanks largely to participation from a slew of super-producers (including MF Doom, PF Cuttin', and Pete Rock) as well as appearances from the usual Shaolin mic-specialists. On the whole, it's a good omen for the Wu--who've been through ...

| | Easy Bill & The Big Beat Stay Tuned! CD (2005)
Smoke And Mirrors album
$17.69 January 1, 2005 was a date to remember here in Colorado. The sudden cancellation of the "R&B Jukebox" was both surprising and disappointing to the blues fans of the Rocky Mountain region, and the sounds of the Golden Age of Rhythm & Blues blaring out of radios everywhere came to a halt. A seven-plus year Saturday night staple was no more. Easy Bill, who had hosted the show for over two years, hoped that fans of the music would Stay Tuned for what was next...And they did. Now a new Saturday night tradition is being born as blues fans, swing dancers, and roots-rockers alike have been hittin' the clubs to enjoy the good-time sounds of Easy Bill & The Big Beat, quickly making a name for themselves as a guaranteed fun night out. Appearances at clubs along the Front Range, as well as a headlining show on the Swing Stage at the annual Denver People's Fair and serving as host band for such events as the "Mile High Blues Harmonica Blowdown" and the popular "Sweethearts of the Blues" all-girl revue, have helped to solidify the band's reputation as an up and coming act doing their part to keep the blues thriving well into the 21st century. The 2003 release of their debut album "Midnight Creep" earned favorable reviews and debuted on the Living Blues Radio Charts at #18. Their sophomore effort, appropriately titled "Stay Tuned!" marks the maturation of a band beginning to hit their stride. Recorded at Rancho de Rhythm in Elgin, Illinois, "Stay Tuned!" was produced by two-time W.C. Handy Award nominee Nick Moss and engineered by fellow Flip-Top Gerry Hundt, both of whom make guest appearances on the album. "Stay Tuned!" features covers of songs by the likes of Guitar Slim, Piano Red, Little Milton, and Red Prysock, alongside tunes penned by Easy Bill & The Big Beat. The band includes Easy Bill Towber on guitar and vocals, RD Jones on bass, Mark Richardson on pinao and organ, Ken Plum on saxophone, and Chris Beers on drums and percussion. The CD was officially released September 6, 2005 on Rhythm & Roll Records. For more information and to keep in ...
