Hailing from Snoop's town--Long Beach, California--Young Lyfe shows that the locale's laid-back g-funk sound is still alive and well. On his debut album REAL LYFE, Young Lyfe puts down gangsta-themed rhymes that--while rarely quick-tongued or clever in the manner of MCs like Paul Wall or Ludacris--are straightforward, deep, and heavy-lidded in a classic West Coast style. Guest appearances from Soopafly, Daz, and Goldie Loc put weight behind Young Lyfe's first ups, which helps considerably, as do jeep- and club-ready anthems like "Put Yo Hands Up" and the P-funk-esqe, "Flashlight"-inspired jam "This Is Why."

$19.79 "Angel" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording.
He's updated both his trademark big hair and his sound, which now includes hip hop beats and samples, but Lionel Ritchie's first album of the 21st century still sounds as melodic, and as harmonically complex, as anything he's done before, and the lyrics are just as heartfelt. "Angel," the album's single, for example, sounds right at home (particularly rhythmically) with anything else on the radio in 2001, but if you really listen you'll hear a classic Ritchie ballad that would have worked equally well during his '80s heyday.
Elsewhere, there's a pronounced Latin influence on several of the songs such as "Cinderella," "Dance the Night Away," and "Don't You Ever Go Away." The album ends rousingly with the anthemic "Don't Stop the Music."
Lionel Richie, barring his success in the '80s with such hits as "Hello," "Running With the Night," and "All Night Long," has struggled to find his place in music after life with the Commodores. Renaissance, Richie's 2001 release, is another post-Commodores album that misses the mark. Most of the songs don't particularly fit any radio format, with the exception of adult contemporary, but that's not the problem. Lacking a radio home doesn't make for a bad recording. It's the material on Renaissance, which is uninteresting, and Richie's voice is often out of place with the music, as illustrated on "Angel." This song features a mild dance beat but Richie's voice is sorely incompatible with it. Elsewhere, there are nice Latin-flavored arrangements, such as on "Cinderella" and "Dance the Night Away." But, again, Richie's vocal delivery doesn't work with such musical styling. This clash between music and voice is a running theme on Renaissance. Lyrically, the album fails as well, and is rife with juvenile wordplay: "I held you close to me/Girl, you are my ecstasy/Your lips, and your hair/The way you touch me, girl I swear/Only ...

Sam Cooke was a giant not just in the soul world, but in the larger scheme of American music. His melding of soul, gospel, and pop was as trenchant as it was revolutionary and influential. This unbeatable 30-song compilation touches on every aspect of this phenomenally gifted singer-songwriter's career. The romantic croon of "You Send Me" shares space with the mournful "Sad Mood," the romping "Twistin' the Night Away," and the moving social/spiritual statement "A Change Is Gonna Come" (this compilation is one of the rare collections to have this stirring and sought-after track). For pure fun, it's hard to beat the humor-filled "Another Saturday Night." Perhaps the master stroke, though, is "Havin' a Party." As no less esteemed a personage than Bruce Springsteen once observed, it's an ostensibly celebratory song that seems to bear a deep sadness via Cooke's vocal performance, a sense of laughing to keep from crying.
