Latin-pop singer/songwriter Jon Secada truly mixes it up on his release SAME DREAM, a stylistic merry-go-round that shows Secada to be as flexible as his is talented. SAME DREAM careens from funky R&B and club tunes to country-flavored balladry and reggaeton, yet the disparate styles are unified by Secada's powerful, emotive voice.
Secada takes a few reflective turns, as on "Last to Know" and the intimate, moving title track. And the songs "She's All I Ever Had" (which he wrote for Ricky Martin) and "Coming Out of the Dark" (which he wrote for his former Miami Sound Machine boss Gloria Estefan) both get a nice reworking as Secada puts his personal stamp on them. Meticulously produced, passionately performed, and exhibiting a wide scope, SAME DREAM is one of Secada's strongest efforts.
Same Dream is Jon Secada's first pop album in five years and although there's been a long wait between albums, Secada hasn't changed his sound much. In fact, Same Dream sounds as if he's turning back the years even further than 2000s Better Part of Me, as if he's trying to reconnect with the appealing mellow sound that fueled his early-'90s hits. Not only is he not trying to have a big modern dance hit -- the closest he comes is sampling Hall & Oates' "I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)" on "My Baby Don't Rock Like That," but the end result sounds closer to soft rock than hip-hop -- he's not even gunning for the Latin pop market here. Instead, this is a pure adult contemporary pop album, with soft surfaces, soulful, tasteful vocals and warm melodies that are sturdy, not hooky. It's well constructed and, even though it was cut by a variety of producers, it's cohesive, making it a satisfying listen. Perhaps it's not anything new from Secada, but it does find him reconnecting to his strengths, which will be more than enough for fans who have followed him for nearly 15 years now. Jon Secada Same Dream Songs Same Dream Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) The best of Jon Secada This is a great CD. Jon Secada proves that he still one of the best singers ever! The lyrics are lovely and the songs touch deeps in the souls of those who listen to it! Hope that he starts a new tour soon! Submitted by renata (São Paulo, SP, Brazil) Was This Review Helpful? Jon Returns and Excels!! Jon returns with his latest, Same Dream and takes it to the next level. There are choice heartbreak ballads (Love's Tears, Last To Know), love songs (All I Wanna Be, Window To My Heart, Someday). Songs written for others become his own through superior interpretations (She's All I Ever Had, Coming Out Of The Dark), revealing new coloring and depth. Jon also brings back the sunny pop he's known for (Bring On The Sun, Free). The hottest tracks are those not written by Jon, in which he tackles the music trends of funky dance and reggaeton and renders them the standard for comparison (My Baby Don't Rock Like That and Tender Love). Through it all, it is Jon's most cohesive work. His voice never sounded better. Welcome back, Jon!! Submitted by Forjulio (Tampa, Florida) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Same Dream album
$8.25 Anybody going into John Rich's Underneath the Same Moon and expecting the gonzo country-rap-rock of Big & Rich will be sorely disappointed. Rich recorded the album in 1999, five years before the first Big & Rich record, but it remained unreleased until March 2006, as the duo entered their third year of omnipresence. There's a reason why it was shelved in 1999: it's not that great. Not that it's terrible, but Underneath the Same Moon was made when John Rich was still trying to play by the Nashville rule book, so it's predictable, polished, and safe. Ballads dominate the album, as if each cut were designed ...

$16.45 Modern Americana At Its Best, (09/20/06)From its raucous Bluegrass instrumental opener to the mellow Country-influenced closer, this disc rambles through a mostly original set with a couple of covers thrown in. What's immediately evident is that this is an ensemble effort - there are no stars. The Lonesome Stars is a side project. Chris Allen's recent solo efforts come after a successful run with the alt-Country group Rosavelt. Austin "Walkin' Cane" Charanghat splits his time as a solo act and fronting the hardworking Walkin' Cane Band. Tom Prebish is an accomplished and sought-after sideman when he's not fronting the Bluegrass band Bolo Deluxe. As if it's not obvious, these boys have the chops.More importantly, the camaraderie that grows out of 30 years of friendship (since elementary school) comes through easily on this debut recording. While each takes turns on lead vocals, often as not, they're harmonizing with each other. The trio's all-acoustic sound is fleshed out with Prebish and Charanghat on acoustic bass and slide guitar, respectively. On a few tracks the old-time sound is enhanced by Ed Caner's fiddle and Dan Rose on banjo. In spots, I could swear there's percussion, but we'll assume that it's stomping, tapping, slapping, or clapping, but not a drum kit.Charanghat and Allen share the writing credit on most of the originals, proving that they can deliver powerful and soulful sentiment without compromise. The added bonus is that they can do it with a tune that feels at once new and familiar. There are several highlights on the disc, with each of the trio getting a moment in the sun.Allen takes the lead vocals on the Pop-inflected "Gun Metal Blue." Charanghat says, "I had to beg [Chris] to put it on the record. He thought it was too dark. I thought it was fitting." It's another song about the girl that got away, hoping to see her again, "after a lifetime waged in other lovers' beds." ...
