With the songwriting and production team of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller behind them, the Coasters were easily one of the most interesting vocal groups of the late '50s and early '60s, and their singles always featured inventive arrangements and great sound, managing to deliver gritty R&B while simultaneously wooing a mainstream audience and climbing the pop charts. Coast Along with the Coasters collects the group's Atco singles from 1959, 1960, and 1961, and was originally released on LP in 1962. Most of the songs are Leiber & Stoller compositions, naturally, but the group also covers material written by Bobby Darin ("Wait a Minute"), Doc Pomus ("The Snake & the Bookworm"), and Willie Dixon ("My Babe") in this set, and the continually fresh-sounding vocal and instrumental arrangements give the album a more cohesive, thought-out feel than most LPs released at the time. Among the highlights are the shuffle rock of the opener, "(Ain't That) Just Like Me," the social statement of "What About Us" (which contrasts the haves with the have-nots), and the truly bizarre "Run Red Run," which tells the story of a beer-drinking, card-playing monkey who tries to shoot his keeper for cheating at poker. Gotta love these guys. ~ Steve Leggett

Coast Along With The Coasters CD music
$18.79 This CD contains B.B. King's first ABC-Paramount studio efforts -- Mr. Blues (1962) and Confessin' the Blues (1965), respectively. While there are inevitable similarities between the projects, offering them back-to-back allows listeners an acute sense of King's rapid maturation and development during what was by all accounts the nexus of the guitarist/vocalist's career. The dozen-song Mr. Blues was a haphazard start for King with the contents taken from three different recording sessions in a 13-month period (March 1, 1962 through April 11, 1963). Based on the results, the artist was being presented as a blues shouter, supported by an antiquated big band and/or orchestra. Arguably the best of the lot comes from the Maxwell Davis led ensemble on the first of several ...

Coast Along With The Coasters songs
$7.85 The phrase "trad jazz" is officially applied to the old-fashioned sort of New Orleans-inspired music that was cooked up by British traditionalists during the 1950s and 1960s. Sackville's delightful The Other Parlophones 1951-1954 is one definitive trad jazz compilation. This Humphrey Lyttelton material holds up marvelously when compared with Lu Watters & His Yerba Buena Jazz Band, Bob Scobey's Frisco Band, or even Kid Ory's Good Time Jazz recordings from the mid-'50s. A number of the songs heard on this disc were composed by trumpeter Lyttelton, pianist Graeme Bell, banjoist Norman "Bud" Baker, and other bandmembers. There's also quite a dose of bedrock classic jazz material composed by W.C. Handy, Jelly Roll Morton, Kid Ory, Fats Waller, and Hoagy Carmichael. Note the presence of vocalist Marie Bryant on "Ain't Misbehavin'," "Beale Street ...
