Songs To Hear Before You Die
$13.14 Dutch pomp-metal band Epica, fronted by classically trained mezzo-soprano Simone Simons, released their second album for Nuclear Blast only a year after their label debut, the more unique The Classical Conspiracy. That two-disc live set found them performing a mix of classical works and their own songs with backing by a full orchestra and choir. This album offers more of their bombastic goth metal songs, with Simons' vocals floating atop an ever flowing stream of complicated drumming, epic riffs, and shredtastic solos. The use of orchestral instruments to add John Williams-like climaxes is intermittently successful, but the music is just as frequently stripped down to an unaccompanied piano or to just the rock band, and that works, ...
| | Keith Richards Talk Is Cheap CD (1988)
Songs To Hear Before You Die
$8.79 The first solo outing from Mr. Rock & Roll himself, TALK IS CHEAP is a solid, rootsy effort with something for everyone. The opening cut, "Big Enough," mines a deep funk groove (abetted by veteran funksters Bootsy Collins and Bernie Worrell of Parliament/Funkadelic fame) and makes it clear that the set will not be pure Stones revival. While "Take It So Hard" kicks off with the clarion call of Keith Richards's signature guitar sound and echoes the vibe of Stones songs "Happy" and "Tumbling Dice," it lays claim to its own distinctive mood.
"I Could Have Stood You Up" hearkens back to the swinging rock & roll of the 1950s, complete with doo-wop backing vocals and honky-tonk piano, before segueing into mid-tempo, emotive tracks "Make No Mistake" and "You Don't Move Me," recalling late-'70s Dylan. Approaching the album's end, the melancholic "Locked Away" provides an antidote to the head-bobbing rhythm of "Rockawhile" and the angular closing punch of "It Means a Lot." Richards's understated vocal delivery and blues-drenched guitar lines (which manage to sound simultaneously clean, spare, and gloriously sleazy) earmark this fine collection of tunes.
1988 debut solo album from the legendary Rolling Stones guitarist that was co-produced with drummer Steve Jordan. This also marked the first appearance of his backing band, The X-Pensive Winos, who provide loose but disciplined backing for the Rock hero. Veteran Funk masters William "Bootsy" Collins and keyboardist Bernie Worrell contributed their talents as well.
All songs co-written by Keith Richards and Steve Jordan.
Recorded at Air Studios, Montserrat, Switzerland and Le Studio, Montreal, Canada.

| | Faith & The Muse Evidence Of Heaven CD (1999)
Songs To Hear Before You Die
$13.89 Monica Richards and William Faith spool their archangel glory and Celtic auras to spawn a dramatic third album, Evidence of Heaven, the first for the duo's Mercyground label. A heavy storybook of dark romanticism, archaic in nature, mold the illustrious theatrics found on Evidence of Heaven. Faith's guitar work is scalding, fiercely driven over Richards' haunting vocalics. Sonically, the band's demeanor is roughcast around dripping poetics, specifically on "Scars Flown Proud." This particular cut is raging with the fear of fear, but also welcoming ...

| | Runaways Queens Of Noise CD (1977) (Import)
Songs To Hear Before You Die
$16.19 A huge improvement over the fine but slightly awkward self-titled debut, QUEENS OF NOISE finds the Runaways taking a stronger hand in the songwriting, with co-producer Earle Mankey (Sparks, Concrete Blonde) bringing the overall sound more in line with the burgeoning punk movement than the glitter-rock vibe of the first album. More importantly, QUEENS OF NOISE is the album on which guitarist Joan Jett asserts herself as the leader of the band, writing two of the album's best songs, "Take It Or Leave It" and the sexy "I Love Playing With Fire," and taking over lead vocals from Cherie Currie on half of the 10 songs here. Although the extended guitar-solo closer "Johnny Guitar" foretells the more purely metallic direction the Runaways would take (as lead guitarist Lita Ford started to challenge Jett's punkier tastes), the rest of QUEENS OF NOISE stands up to the best American proto-punk records.
