In the doom metal/stoner rock/sludge field, worshiping and adoring Black Sabbath are not only a popular thing to do -- they are almost obligatory. In many cases, the Sabbath influence has more to do with the riffs than vocals; a doom or stoner band that offers Sabbath-influenced riffs may have a vocalist who doesn't sound anything at all like Ozzy Osbourne. But on Sheavy's Republic?, Sabbath affects the playing, the writing, and the singing; the Canadians' riffs and songs have a major Sabbath influence, and Steve Hennessy's lead vocals are so Osbourne-like that his detractors have often argued, "Instead of emulating the Oz, why don't you develop your own vocal style?" But as Sabbath-obsessed as Republic? is, it would be a mistake to dismiss Sheavy as an exact replica of '70s-era Sabbath. Sure, these headbangers have spent a lot of time listening to Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Paranoid, and Master of Reality -- there's no getting around that fact. But Republic? has a sludginess that you won't find on Sabbath's classic '70s recordings -- a sludginess that owes something to the Melvins as well as grunge (which, of course, was greatly affected by the Melvins -- a band that had a huge impact on Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, and many other Seattle bands of the late '80s and early '90s). And Republic?, in fact, was produced by someone with very strong sludge credentials: Billy Anderson, who is known for his work with the Melvins and Orange Goblin. Under Anderson's direction, Sheavy deliver an album that won't win any awards for being groundbreaking or terribly original but is enjoyable nonetheless. Anderson is a definite asset for Sheavy on this derivative but worthwhile doom/stoner/sludge outing. ~ Alex Henderson

Somewhere out on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, just below the Arctic Circle, lies Newfoundland. It is here, a thousand miles away from the trendy salons and boutiques of New York or London, that Sheavy come from and here the riff is all. With the eventual funeral of Stoner Rock now almost long since forgetten, a few bands from that period have maintained the support, or indeed motivation, to overcome the mourning of it's fated passing. Republic features 11total tracks. Rise Above. 2005.

Devin Townsend's maniacal/wacky tendencies duel with his instinct for skull-crushing heaviness on ADDICTED, the second in a planned trilogy of albums he's put together since retiring his ultimate metal band, Strapping Young Lad, a few years back. Anneke van Giersbergen, formerly of the Gathering, is Townsend's vocal partner throughout much of the album, creating a Lacuna Coil-esque effect as he roars and she croons and the guitar riffs ride almost disco- and techno-like rhythms. "Bend It Like Bender" is a particularly weird blend of metal and Hi-NRG, something Rammstein might come up with after a weekend of carousing in Berlin's most flamboyant discos. Other tracks, ...

When Anthrax released AMONG THE LIVING in 1987, the band was a part of a then-burgeoning heavy metal sub-genre called speed or thrash metal. This was an inversion of glam metal. The band members wore worn-out jeans and T-shirts, their long hair was hairspray-free, and not a smudge of make-up was applied to their unsightly mugs. Their music was dense, borrowing speed from punk and hardcore and mammoth guitar riffing from metal, and featured thought-provoking lyrics. AMONG THE LIVING not only served as Anthrax's commercial breakthrough, but (along with seminal ...

Little Brother Montgomery No Special Rider CD  (1968)

CD $12.89
Digitally remastered by Larry Packer & Gene Rosenthal (Uncle Paunchy Studios, Silver Spring, Maryland). Barrelhouse piano player Eurreal "Little Brother" Montgomery played boogie from the crowds as a touring, pre-teen performer. Also a vocalist, Montgomery began his half-century of recording in the Depression with such songs of loss as "Vicksburg Blues" and "No Special Rider." On these 1969 recordings, rich, full-throated Jeanne Carroll ("Penny Pinching Blues") appears on four of the 12 tracks. She carefully enunciates her way through a rendition of Ma Rainey's "You Gotta See Your Mama Every Night." The excellent blues vocalist and pianist Little Brother Montgomery, an influence to Willie Dixon, Otis Spann, and Skip James, here guides us from his home through the tradition of classic early, post-ragtime piano blues. ~ Tom Schulte for ...

Future I Can't Leave Behind
Stefano Capobianco Future I Can't Leave Behind CD  (2006)

Republic? CD music
CD $16.45
Stefano is a New Jersey via Boston now Los Angeles transplant. Picking up the guitar at age 13, he dove head first into the satan loving rock 'n roll of KISS. In comparison to the AM radio upbringing of The Bee Gees, Olivia Newton John, and America, this was a major rebellion. But soon these rock roots grew deeper and stronger with the discovery of Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and The Beatles. But when MTV came around it created a Pop/Rock monster. While simultaneously hating video, killing the essence of music and secretly consuming copious amounts of videos while playing hooky from school, Stefano blended his love of true rock guitar grit, with pop song sensibilities and perfomance art. What is unique and also second nature to Stefano is his ablility to not only be a gifted and craftsman like singer/songwriter in his own right, but to also have the great skill to be able to help make others shine as well. Wether it's by providing extra or lead guitar duties, playing bass or adding excellent and tasteful harmonies, Stefano brings his artistry as a musician and performer to others music in a way that never outshines but always brightens each performer he accompanies. In 1995, after kicking around the NYC scene for several years in and out of bands he tried to develop, Stefano moved to Boston to join old school friends in the band Little John. Stepping in on bass, and fulfilling a dream of being the John Paul Jones/Paul McCartney of the band, LJ went on to sign with EMI in New York and released there debut CD "Derailer" in '96. Things didn't go as well as they would have wanted and the band was dropped, but not without enough in their pockets to continue, start there own label and release not only a second record but other bands and compilations as well. Stefano's yearning to get back to his own music soon began to take hold and he recorded "Stefano" in 1997. Receiving great press and some national airplay, he toured in support and realized he was ready to move on to his own career and decided to make his way to LA to continue his musical development. Since then he has produced two more cd's of his stuff, started another group with singer/songwriter/pianist Cindi Law, called Proper Villains, recording 2 E.P.'s as well, and performed ...

CD $12.95  Audio Samples
Supernaut may not outwardly revel in the metal power their name implies (as in that little Black Sabbath ditty), but regardless, they sure do kick a lot of ass. Pabst-drenched and with a hardened edge, Burning Through the Motions is a revitalizing blast of guitar-powered excellence and jean-jacket coolness. Commanded by the chain-smoking vocals of ex-Daylights frontman Scott Chapin, Supernaut rock hard with an invigorating balance of post-grunge muscle, punk grit, roguish attitude, and oh yeah, all these tight little hooks that attach directly to the brain. There's a certain everyday-guy kind of appeal that shines through the group's toughness, and a song like "Burn Out the ...
